Listers: I am trying to get this DORAN family back to Ireland before the mid 1830s: This Doran Family appears on the 1841 Census of Wigan (Scholes), England. Scholes was a district of Wigan filled with the Irish Diaspora in the 1840s. According to this census the Dorans arrived in England sometime after 1836. Name: Michael Doran Age: 55 Sex: Male Occupation: Cotton Weaver Born: Ireland Margery Doran, 45, Ireland Michael Doran, 15, Cotton Weaver, Ireland John Doran, 15, Cotton Weaver, Ireland James Doran, 13, Cotton Weaver, Ireland Alice, 15, Cotton Weaver, Ireland Margaret, 5, Ireland I originally thought that Michael, John and Alice may have been triplets based on the fact that the 1841 Census entry recorded them all as "15 years of age". However, The instructions to the enumerator as to how to record ages are at the beginning of every enumerator's book and read: “Write the age of every person under 15 years of age as it is stated to you. For persons aged 15 years and upwards, write the lowest term of 5 years within which the age is. Thus - for Persons aged 15 years and under 20 write 15 , 20 years and under 25 write 20. So these three 15 year olds would have been between 15 and 19 years old.” The 1851 UK Census for England has the following information. Notice the name was spelled DOROND not Doran. From the Irish mouth of the informant to the English ear of the Enumerator, something got lost in translation! Name: Michael Dorond, Hand-loom Weaver Age: 65 Estimated birth year: abt 1786 Relation: Head Spouse's name: Margery, Bobbin Winder Gender: Male Where born: Ireland Civil parish: Wigan Ecclesiastical parish: St Catherine County/Island: Lancashire Country: England Street address: 113 Ashton Street, Wigan Registration district: Wigan Sub-registration district: Wigan Household schedule number: 113 Household Members: James Dorond, son, 20, Hand-loom Weaver Margaret Dorond, daughter, 18, Threstle Spinner (Cotton) Margery Dorond, wife, 59, Bobbin Winder Michael Dorond, Head, 65, Hand-loom Weaver Michael Dorond, visitor, 5, Scholar Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece: 2199; Folio: 259; Page: 35; GSU roll: 87208-87209. Notice John and Alice Doran are on their own during this Census. Alice is living as a lodger at 2 Chapel Street in Wigan and John Doran is also living as a lodger at 179 Nicholas’ Nook, Scholes, Wigan. I wonder who is Michael Dorond, visitor, age 5. Could he be the son of Margaret, age 18? There is a Michael Doran who died in the Wigan Workhouse on 5 March 1865 at the age of 79. I do not know if this is my Michael Doran: Wigan Register: 8c 41. I have sent for the death certificate. ANYBODY RECOGNIZE THIS DORAN FAMILY? Thanks for your help....
