JOHN MONAGHAN and MARY GILL were both born in Ireland, he about 1834 and her birth date unknown. I'm not certain but believe they were born in County Westmeath and possibly Castlepollard. They had at least two sons Thomas Francis Monaghan (c1873) and Patrick Aloysius Monaghan (c1877). The father and both sons immigrated to the States in either 1880 or 1881 depending on census and citizenship documents. I don't know if Mary came with them but the 1900 census show John to be a widower. I have never been able to locate the ship they arrived in, but it certainly was at New York. We have the complete history of the families after they arrived as they landed in New Jersey and "stayed put", but we have been unable to discover anything about them prior to their arrival.
