Mary GILL was born in Ireland about 1840/1950, probably in County Westmeath or an adjacent county. She married John Monaghan and had three male children - John Jr., Thomas, and Patrick. The two older boys (Thomas born 2 Dec 1870 and John Jr. born 7 Sep 1873) are listed in the Civil Registration for Castlepollard, Westmeath. The father and two sons (Thomas and Patrick) came to the States (Newark, NJ) in 1881/1882 according to census data, but I have yet to find if Mary Gill and one son (John Jr) ever left Ireland. Any information about Mary Gill would be greatly appreciated. The Civil Registration data is confusing to me in that it shows Thomas as born in 1870 and John Jr. in 1873. However, Thomas (my wife's grandfather) usually gave his birth year as 1873 according to his application for citizenship, his application for a social security number, and census reports. John STAFFORD and Helen WELCH had a daughter Ellen or Elleanor born circa 1815. Ellen married William SPRATT of Little Paris Island in Co Fermanagh, and for some time they lived in Coolgarran as tenant farmers. Ellen may belong to one of three STAFFORD families in Pollareagh, Co Cavan. In 1821 census fragment these are : John Stafford, age 56, farmer Elleanor, age 53, wife, flax spinner John, age 31, son, labourer Thomas, age 24, son, labourer Elleanor, age 7, grand-daughter (probable) 2 servants James Stafford, age 51, farmer & weaver Margaret, age 46, wife, flax spinner John, age 21, son, labourer James, age 18, son, labourer George, age 16, son, labourer Benjamin, age 6, son Henery, age 3, son Mary, age 14, daughter, flax spinner Jane, age 8, daughter William Stafford, age 53, farmer Catherine, age 35, wife, flax spinner John, age 13, son, labourer Ellen, age 12, daughter (possible) Martha, age 11, daughter Lucy, age 9, daughter Jane, age 5, daughter Harriett, age 2, daughter Benjamin Stafford, age 49, farmer Elleanor, age 18, daughter, flax spinner Catherine, age 17, daughter Judith, age 15, daughter John, age 5, son As there are only 17 households in Pollareagh it is a fair bet that these four are all related, and as the eldest son in each family is named John, John, James, William and Benjamin may all be brothers, son of a John Stafford. I would like to hear from any-one researching these families, or who has information on Stafford families in Cavan. Lyn Whakatane, New Zealand

-----Original Message----- From: vmonrn [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, October 11, 2004 7:06 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Donovan, O'Donovan, Mahoney - County Cork I am looking for information on Timothy Donovan (O'Donovan) born in County Cork Ireland, in Clonakilty at about 1822. He married Catherine Mahoney also born in Clonakilty about 1826. They came to US about 1880, living with other family members first in NY, possibly PA and then Minnesota before settling with their daughter and son in law in Texas. It is thought all nine of their children came to the US. Margaret Theresa, Jeramiah, Ellen, Patrick. James, James, John, and Timothy Jr. Virginia
I am still hoping for contact with someone researching the HARPER family of Ballynahinch. I have been told that there are several places by that name in Ireland. My ancestor's name was Eliza Jane Mortimer Harper. MORTIMER may also be a family name. Her parents were John HARPER and Margaret BARR. Any information would be appreciated. Betty
My gr-gr-grandmother is said to be Irish from Co Cork. He name is Jane Kennedy pos Mary/Margaret Jane Kennedy. She was born 1818 Co Cork Ireland so it is said. I know nothing about her or her family. She died 1925 I think in Dunlap Kansas. She never became a US citzen. She wound up in Scotland before 1847 where she married Samuel Anderson in Port Glasglow Renfrewshire Scotland. They had a daughter born to them Margaret/Mary Maitland Anderson. They boarded the ship "Cuthberth" and landed in NYC 1850. From what I have been able to learn they came off the boat directly into the city and most likely into the Irish settlement. They had 3 sons Robert R, William Maitland, and Samuel Jr. We (also the Clan Maitland) feel that somewhere the Maitland name plays into one of the lines because they named two of their children with the middle name of Maitland. If anyone knows of Jane Kennedy b 1818 Ireland I would appreciated any help you can give me. TIA Glitz
Well, here again are my Corkers (Incidentally here in NZ and Australia when you say something is 'corker' it means pretty good, satisfactory.) BARRY John born about 1791 (don't know where) died in Cape Town 1855 (I have lots of info from the time the family left Ireland in 1840, lived in Liverpool for two years before going on to South Africa) He married Anna Maria BUSHNELL probably in 1830s, maybe in Cobh. She is said to have been born in Virginia (USA? Cavan?) Pat >

Good morning - This is the first time I have posted on this list and this is the information that I have at present. Kate ROURKE and John GUNNION married on 11 April 1852 at St. Michael's Church of England and Ireland in the City of Limerick. John was a seaman from Scotland and lived on Arthur's Quay. Kate lived on Howley's Quay and on her marriage certificate she said that her father, OWEN ROURKE's occupation was Parish Clerk. Their witnesses were James Hewson and Mafey Hewson. Kate Rourke Gunnion and John Gunnion had the following children all born in Ireland: James (1854), Sarah Mary (1856), Frances Kate (1857), David Stanley (1859), Letitia (1862), John (1863). On the 1871 Lancashire census, we find Kate/Katherine with two of her sons, James (12) and John (8). Her husband, she claimed was "at sea". Missing from the census, and presumed left behind in Ireland were 17 year old James, 15 year old Sarah, 14 year old Frances, and 9 year old Letitia. Unless the children were left to fend for themselves, I have concluded that perhaps they stayed with Rourke relatives as there were no other Gunnion's in Ireland. By 1881 all the Gunnion children were in Ireland and Kate was deceased. I check the IGI and Ancestry.uk frequently. I am looking for any information on Kate Rourke before her marriage and/or any information on Owen Rourke between, say, 1850 and 1870. Thank you, Kat - NJ - USA
