What people need to realize is that the book "Land Owners in Ireland; Return of Owners of Land of One Acre and Upwards in the several Counties, Counties of Cities, and Counties of Towns In Ireland" is a very limited in scope. It is not as extensive a list as Griffith's Valuation, for example. Only a small percentage of landowners had more than one acre. All of the Aherns in Ireland are shown at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aherns/ahloii.htm#landowners for example and they total 15 persons, or 14 actually as Charles Ahern owns land in two different counties. I would suggest that in future anyone with a lookup request, contact Maryann directly. You might also find that this book is available at a public Library near you. -dja
First, let me apologize to all the "obits" list subscribers who are getting bombarded with unwanted emails about look ups. I would be the first to agree how annoying it is to receive lots of emails that don't pertain to the list or things of interest. It was never my intent to inundate everyone but it has snowballed because it is a new "resource" for many people. Second, I will be happy to continue doing look ups for anyone if you will send an email directly to me, not to the list. Given the number of requests it may take me a few days to get back to everyone, but I will respond. Third, Mr. Ahern is correct that many Irish citizens didn't own 1 acre or more until the land acts in 1903 and 1907 when they purchased the land they were tenants on or increased their holdings from less than 1 acre. Fourth, Mr. Ahern is correct that the Griffith's Valuation is an excellent resource with more details than my book provides, but the book is of a little later period than the GV so it may have information that wasn't in the GV for a particular area. Again my apologies to everyone, there is no need to "choose sides" in the debate because those that want information can contact me directly and everyone will be happy.
