    1. [IRL-OBITS] LOOKUP LIST
    2. Dave Jassie
    3. Hi folks, I recently adopted the Lookup-L mailing list but it soon became apparent that it was no longer needed for the purpose it was originally created for. It seemed a shame for it to go to waste, so I decided to try using it for a slightly different purpose. I am currently compiling an index to Irish research material that is available on the Internet. Most of the links are to archived mailing list and message board posts. This could very easily be extended to include links to information pertaining to anywhere in the world. Therefore, I propose to utilise the list in the following way ~ * Any subscriber with resources they are willing to do lookups from would be invited to post the details to the list. A link to the archived message will be included on the website. * Anyone who has, or has knowledge of, a website, where useful genealogical information is available to search could post brief details and the URL which would then be included in the index. * If you know of a Message Board or Mailing list where transcriptions are, or have been, regularly posted (like Alison Causton's transcriptions on the Armagh mailing list) then I will include them in the index. So, if you feel you could help and would like to be part of this project, send a new e-mail with the word - subscribe - in the body of the message to ~ LOOKUP-L-request@rootsweb.com for list mode, or LOOKUP-D-request@rootsweb.com for digest mode. Best wishes, Dave Jassie - dave.jassie@ntlworld.com (List Administrator) For information regarding mailing lists, web sites and look-up resources I have, Visit Gen-Links at - http://freepages.misc.rootsweb.com/~jassie/index.html

    3. Patti, I have heard of name changes on both sides. My uncle was from Mayo - the family name their is Noone. Here in the states it's Noonan. From the work that I have done so far, it appears that many have changed their names after emigration. There are however, a few plausible reasons to change before. Did they sail to England first, then the US - if so - that might be where they changed their names. Best of luck! 2. Patti Schroeder
    3. Hi, I am wondering if anyone has ever seen the surname of Taston or Testin or Teston associated with Ireland. My gr gr grandfather Jacob Testin (some times spelled Taston or Teston) was said to have been born in Limmerick Ireland. He is supposed to have come to the U.S. about 1845-1850 with his brother Henry and possibly his parents Henry and Susan. He was for sure in Yellow Springs Ohio in 1857 when he married Ellen McLaughlin and then by 1858 they were in Wisconsin. I have searched for this surname in a ton of different ways and have never come up with it at all. Does anyone have any ideas as to a spelling change maybe? Thanks, Patti http://skeerticat.tripod.com/pattisgensite/

    3. D E A T H S Amongst the numerous and irreparable losses, caused by the present pestilence, there has not, perhaps, occurred one that will be more severly felt in the circle wherein he moved, than the death of Mr. Charles Parry. A warm and kind hearted friend to the poor, in whose service he contracted his illness, being one of the visiting committee of the Odd Fellows Relief ; he was respected by all who knew him. By the Temperance Societies of the city his death will be bitterly mourned, for he was a sincere and zealous teetotaller. An Englishman by birth, he was indefatigable in his exertions for the right of self-government to Ireland. As a member of the Odd Fellows Society, he spared neither his time nor exertions in collecting subscriptions to alleviate the present distress, and in disposing of them to the best advantage for the poor, who have lost in him a practical and truly benevolent friend. He has left a widow and children to bewail his loss. At Mallow, of fever, Michael Ahern, Esq. Struck down in the vigour of youth, and in the commencement of a useful and honourable career, his premature death is a source of the deepest affliction, not alone to an amiable and interesting wife, whom it consigns to early widowhood, but of the sincerest sorrow and regret to all who enjoyed the happiness of his friendship. Upright, honourable, and high-minded possessed of a refined and cultivated understanding, and a warm and generous heart. It was impossible to know him intimately without loving him deeply ; and this was sufficiently evinced by the expressions of unfeigned sorrow perceptible in the countenances of the numerous friends who followed his remains to their final resting place. At Mallow, on the 22d inst., Mr. William O'Callaghan, T.C., regretted by a numerous circle of friends.
