Hi, I placed an order to Genealogical Society of Ireland for two publications #23 and 24 but they are "out of print." Publications are "Name Index to Tombstone Inscriptions of County Louth, Ireland - Vols. 1 & 2". If anyone on this list has these volumes and are willing to do a lookup for me I would greatly appreciate it. I have been trying to locate burial sites for: James Fitzsimons, d. 28 October 1899 Elizabeth (Keegan) Fitzsimons, d. 30 August 1898 They were living on West Street, Drogheda and were Roman Catholic. Thanks a million, Muriel USA
Hi Muriel, Not sure if I replied to you on this or not so forgive me if I'm duplicating myself. These are only suggestions but may help you on your search. West Street is the main street in Drogheda. It's a small street all the same so the fact that your ancestors lived on West Street probably means that they were involved in trade of some sort as around that time it was quite a good address to live at (now adays it would be too busy of course). You could try contacting the Old Drogheda Historical Society and see if they can help. They're located at the Millmount Museum, The Governor's House, Millmount, Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland and can be reached at International Code, Country Code 41 9833057 and by email at info@millmount.net. I know for definite that they have or used to have a publication that lists all of the tenants of West Street (not sure if it was the Streets and Lanes of Drogheda by James Garry or a different one). Another option is the County Louth library (Drogheda is in Louth) as they might have the publications or could suggest who to contact. The librarians name is Miss Ann Ward. Correspondence should be addressed to her as Miss Ann Ward, County Librarian, Louth County Library HQ, Roden Place, Dundalk, Co.Louth, Ireland. Her email is libraryhelpdesk@louthcoco.ie and the phone number is International code, Country code (believe it's 353) 42 (there is a preceding zero but this is dropped for international calls) 9335457 or 9353190. Ireland is five hours ahead of New York if that helps you with the time zones. Last but not least you could try the local paper the Drogheda Independent at 9 Shop Street, Drogheda. Write them a letter c/o the editor and there is at least a 28,000 person circulation these days so someone should be able to reply to you. There are still lots of Fitzsimons and Keegans in the town. Based on the fact that they were Roman Catholic there might be family members with memorial cards kicking around. Some of these contained a photo of the deceased and their address. All of them contained the date of death and age of death along with a prayer and were sized to fit into a purse or wallet. Not sure if they were a common practice at that particular time but definitely the next generation would have used them and it might help you somehow. Good luck in your search.
