"The Public Record Office and our partners, QinetiQ, are pleased to announce that the 1901 Census Online service officially went live on 2 January. "We are very aware of the great disappointment that a lot of people have experienced in not being able to access the 1901 Census site or who have gained access to the site and then experienced difficulties in using it. We very much regret that this has occurred. There have been very high levels of demand peaking at 1.2 million hits at one time. QinetiQ, who are responsible for the site, are working with their contractors to resolve this as soon as possible. We will publish regular updates. "Please remember that if you would prefer, there are microfiche copies available at Kew and at local record offices throughout England and Wales.
