    3. I visited Glastry Presbyterian Graveyard in Co. Down recently. The graveyard is well-maintained and a credit to the local Presbyterian congregation. The Robert CAUGHEY family plot is near the front entrance to the church. Kirkistown Graveyard is not too far from here. My cousin Edward CAUGHEY is buried there.

Hi all, There is an old Irish cemetery here in the states that I have come across. I is in the woods. the towns people really don't take care off, it there is just to much work to be done to it . the graves date back to the late 1700's but most in the mid to late 1800's and in 1900's. The stones need to be cleaned and the ground also need major cleaning. I hate to see it looking like it does. I was not there that long but I do know that they do have some records and I am going to try to get my little fingers on them as soon as I can. just give me time . It looks like there is know family to the families in the graves there, this is why it looks like it does so any work that is done is all volunteers. if anyone has any ideas on how to clean the grounds and the stones. please send ASAP I am gong to try to get back next week end. it is about a two hours drive. wow what a day. Maybe I can do a fundraiser to get the money to get they stuff we will need to get the job done. The ground! is covered in ivy and all over the stones so you miss half off them. they old iron gates around some of the families. If it was all cleaned up I bet that would be a beautiful places. 3. Tina That sounds an excellent idea. If you don't prompt some action maybe no one ever will. I have photos of the cemetery at Mocollop (Co Waterford) at: http://www.hotkey.net.au/~string/mocollop.htm The local Catholic Parish has adopted the cemetery and parishoners visit there one weekend a year and have a big maintenance / clean up day. Any chance of encouraging a Church or service group to "adopt" the cemetery? 1. [IRL~CEMS] Irish Cemetery in US
    2. Tina Marie, Where is the Irish cem. you are writing about ? Your local Genealogical or Historical Society may supply eager volunteers. It sounds like fun to me. The first time I tried to photograph a moss and lichen covered granite headstone, I couldn't read most of the inscription. Using what I had on hand, water and a rag, the crusty, grey growth just slid off the headstone, leaving dark stain on the lettering. It was perfect. The patina on the granite was not lost by cleaning agents or rough scrubbing. A soft brush might be good to have, but used cautiously. I believe very old buildings are cleaned with just water. It is so great you are doing this. Diane

    1. [IRL~CEMS] Re: Headstone Rubbings...
    2. Hi Kerry... I've just returned from Ireland. If you want a rubbing to frame, the best thing is to get some brown wrapping paper, and a crayon. Then roll it up and post it in a tube. BUT...if you are trying to read a worn stone, try this little trick....it works! Buy yourself a can of shaving cream, put a blob of it in your hand, and swipe your hand across the stone, and rub the cream into the stone. As you wipe the excess cream off the stone, the letters pop out at you. Then take a picture of the stone. I've used this technique on almost smooth stones and have great, clear, legible inscriptions of hundreds of gravestones. You'll love Ireland...it's a beautiful place. Happy Hunting, Peggy

    3. Hello, Dennis: At this point in my research, I am not looking in Co. Waterford; but I did go to your URL "just to see." And I want to commend and thank you for the contribution you are giving family searchers. It makes me wish I were looking in Waterford--there would be such help. I know the work it takes to put together so much information and so many links. It is people like you who are making internet genealogy so thoroughly enjoyable and satisfying (frustrating brick walls notwithstanding). Do you know whether this has been done? I think it is the Council one not the Church. Thank you, Sincerely, Beryl Bleakley
