    1. [IRL-CEMETERIES] Re: McSWEENEY/SWEENEY & O'FLAHERTY/FLAHERTY
    2. Colleen Yuke
    3. Hi to all listers, Seeking any reference to Hannah McSweeney/Sweeney born c 1825 County Cork, Hannah came to Australia but unable to find any entry into Aust. parents unknown. Seeking any reference to the following people Hannah O'Flaherty/Flaherty born Galway Town c 1857, father Walter was a lime burner & mother Eliza Lynch. Hannah came to Queensland 1857 on the 'Robert Lees', I assume Walter & Eliza were buried in Galway. Also looking for death or burial of Robert Graham, possibly Dublin before 1853. Robert had at least 2 sons, Andrew Alexander Graham & John Bailey Graham, research shows Robert was in the 37th Foot Regiment. Any assistance of any kind will be gratefully appreciated. Colleen Yuke from very hot Queensland, Aust.

    3. I wonder if you could help me. I have recently subscribed and am getting heaps of emails from all over the place on a regular basis. However I can't find any way to get to send any emails of my own. I don't necessarily have anything of interest to you - I was wondering if anyone on this noticeboard might have any information about how to get hold of any transcripts of any headstones in Ireland since that's where my grandfather was from and I can't find anything about his family. Any help Thanks Marianne Cummins New Zealand ----- Original Message ----- From: <MCasey863@aol.com> To: <IRELAND-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 09, 2002 1:06 PM Subject: Re: [IRL-CEMETERIES] Cemeteries around Ireland > Hi Jane, > > Thank you for looking up Sue Grieves address and URL. 1. Re: [IRL-CEMETERIES] Cemeteries - MELLIFONT and BYRNE
    2. Judith Mellifont
    3. Dear Marianne, What is your grandfather's name? That is a good start. I have a little bit of the same problem because my Gt Gt Grandparents are buried somewhere in Ireland and I can't find them and as it is such an unusual name, I have not seen it come up during the twelve months I have been subscribing to a number of lists, nor in any research I occasionally do for others. My Gt Gt Grandparents, Patrick MELLIFONT and Ellen BYRNE, married in Cork City at St Finbarr's Catholic South Chapel in August 1834 and had six children: Catherine Baptised 1836 Thomas 1838 William 1840 Jeremiah 1842 Mary 1843 married Cornelius TOBIN 1868 John 1848 My Gt Grandfather, Thomas MELLIFONT, and emigrated to Australia in 1862 aboard the Chatsworth with his wife Margaret SUTTON also from Cork City. They lived within sight of each other, Thomas and his family firstly at 19 Douglas Street and then later at 3 Evergreen St. Margaret (Baptised St Finbarrs 1839) lived in Langford Row just around the corner. They had a son shortly after their arrival in South East Qld but the child died and eventually the marriage did too. Thomas remarried after Margaret's death years later to Mary McWade, my Gt Grandmother. Ellen MELLIFONT (BYRNE) died in Cork in 1888 and PATRICK in 1890. They were still at Evergreen Street at the time. Patrick actually died at work in the Cork Workhouse, now St Finbarr's Hospital, where he was a supervisor. On a recent trip to Ireland I spent days in Cork searching for their graves. I went to all the major and minor cemeteries near Cork City itself without success. They were both RC and all their children were baptised and married at St Finbarr's South Chapel not far from Douglas Street. I have all the MELLIFONT records from there - quite a significant number of people. Patrick was a Corn Factor (Merchant of Indian Corn I believe) and operated from his home address in Douglas Street. But I could only find one John MELLIFONT, a brother to Catherine in Douglas cemetery. Absolutely no sign of Patrick or Ellen. I believe that Patrick's father is also named Patrick but I cannot find hide nor hair of any of them. I suspect that the family may have originally come from another area, perhaps in Cork Co, and may have been buried with family there. I would be grateful for help from listers who may have some clues as to what to do next. Kind regards Judith Mellifont. ----- Original Message ----- From: "george" <george1@e3.net.nz> To: <IRELAND-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 11, 2002 11:44 AM Subject: Re: [IRL-CEMETERIES] Cemeteries around Ireland > I wonder if you could help me. > I have recently subscribed and am getting heaps of emails from all over the > place on a regular basis. 3. Dear Jane, Can you give the address of your web page again, so we can all have a peep? Keep up the good work. Apart from volunteers, some headstones in Ireland are nor enscribed properly. In Leaba Mologga graveyard, Co. Cork, which has a published transcription and which is even on line, both my grandparents, great-grandparents CREED are buried but are not mentioned on the headstones. This would have been quite a common occurance in days gone by, with only immediate family being aware of where relations are buried and this then getting lost in the mist of time. Regards, Sheila Collins

My Great Great Grandmother and seven children, show up in the USA, New York State Census in 1865. Note. several of the children arrived as early as 1850. 3. If you are buried in and around Cork Ireland do they do like here in the States? We are all in the same RC cemetery in Malden Ma and very few have headstone and they are in Lots that don't belong to us. I would think it would be difficult to find ones family over in Ireland. I read the Irish Famine from the NLI and they had bodies put in the same graves and no caskets. All though I found that I had a Uncle that died at 2 and was in a grave with a Carroll and that was my grandmothers line and my first door open to a whole family that nobody knew. I'm booked to go to Dublin on a research trip and shall be very interesting, I talked to a Dublin Gent in our local Family History Center yesterday. I asked in why did he not do any of that when he was there. He said the records are transcribed very poorly because of the handwriting. This will be a challenge for me and my sister. Looking forward to it..... Researching Birmingham/Carroll Co Cork/Galway Carlin/Doherty/Bradley/McLaughlin Co Donegal

    3. Thanks Mary............it's my web site. I'm beginning to think I'll have to learn how to create frames or something not to have the pages so plain. Eventually, the gravestone page will develop nicely - I want to have indices to all the surnames in transcribed Irish graveyards on line. The saddest thing is that while our graveyards go to wrack and ruin their upkeep is generally dependent on volunteers - and in any community, volunteers are few and far between - and always the same people. Sometimes, these kind of people do a transcription of their local graveyard and they manage to publish maybe 500 copies....and then, the 500 are sold locally, bought by people who'll give a glimpse through them and thrown in a bundle. While those of you who would want to know about these publications never find out. I'd like to be able to use my gravestone page to tell those who would want to know about these kind of publications. 'Nuff said.
