Hello all you helpful people, It seems that every time I try to find our Irish relatives I hit a brick wall. My husband's grandmother was CATHERINE MARY HANNON, born in Dublin 1851. Her Father was TIMOTHY HANNON. Catherine went to England and married JAMES WESTLAKE PERRY in Bampton, Devon in 1877. She died there in 1925. I would love to hear from anyone who could tell me of any Hannons around Dublin Thanks to those who share their genealogy with others and a special thanks to Cara. Ann in Canada.
Hi Cara, Thank you in advance for any assistance that you give to any one of us searching for our ancestors. Recently I was fortunate that a volunteer from "Random Acts of Kindness" had been able to get a picture for me of my grandparents gravesite in New York (I live in Puerto Rico). Now, I'm looking for information on my great grandfather. His name was Patrick McKeegan born CO. Antrim approx.1851.I believe he died abt/1890.He married Katherine Murray and emigrated to Brooklyn New York and was a Captain of a Lighter for many years. He became ill and returned to Ireland,Co,Antrim, where he died approx.1890 or so. Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Cara, first time for me in this list. Wanting any sort of cemetery/tombstone/grave snippets re the WALSH FAMILY (don't groan, I know there are heaps). This lot came from Wales, two brothers. One settled in Kilkenny. My clues are Muckalee, Castlecomber, Walshtown. There is a MATTHEW WALSH my ggg grandfather. His wife may have been Caroline although the priest could have got it wrong. Not sure how may children he had but JAMES WALSH emigrated to Sydney Australia in the early 1860's with his wife ANN CONRON. They would have been married in Kilkenny. They had children Patrick, who didn't emigrate, Mathew, John, Martin & Anne who did emigrate.1859-1863. One of these we think was transported as he refused to bend his knee to Royalty. I would love to solve even a little part of this mystery. 1) Where were MATTHEW WALSH and his wife CAROLINE(?) buried. 2) His son JAMES emigrated but his son PATRICK did not so was it that he didn't want to, or was he already dead, or did he become a priest. There was supposed to be several sons took to the priesthood and rose well up in the orders, also female relatives became nuns. I am not convinced that the priest got the christian name of Matthew's wife right, or maybe he married more than once. I suspect that his son James who emigrated to Australia may have married more than once and that Ann Conron was not his first wife. I even suspect that he may have had children with that first wife. A lot of unanswered questions. They did bring a family bible from Ireland but most of the women had scrubbed out their birthdates and replaced them with dates they wish they had had. They were supposed to be landed Gentry. Chancery was supposed to have grabbed up most of their lands and horses etc. My grandfather (son of Matthew son of James son of Matthew) did contact Chancery in London to try & get whatever was there and they said it would probably be OK but that my grandfather or his solicitor would be better living in London for a couple of years to be there on the spot as was required etc. If he had done that, however much was there, would have been used up just living in London not to mention the costs of solicitors & court proceeding., so he had to drop off the dream of getting rich on his fathers Chancery fortune. Oh well! If there should be anyone interested in our family history I am always happy to share. Note: Everytime there was a new cemetery opened in Sydney NSW Australia, my G Grandfather Matthew, bearing in mind the exploding size of his brothers families, would bury grave sites for the family. He purchased a double grave in Waverley Cemetery, Bronte, Sydney NSW Australia.I was over there one day as a child (every Sunday with my dad) and asked whose grave it was. The etching on the bottom said it was the family grave of MATTHEW WALSH. I couldn't find his name on the tombstones anywhere.....He wasn't in it. When he died (at 41yrs) the family put him in the Rookwood Cemetery with his parents JAMES & ANN and various infants etc. While researching the family history grave details, I was stunned to find a triple grave, beautifully tiled, in the original R.C. Section not far from the Irish Monument. My GGfathers brother MARTIN WALSH his wife ELIZABETH QUIGLEY and a couple of their infants were buried there. Also was anothe couple of descendants of my grandfather PATRICK WALSH'S brother WILLIAM WALSH. Well seeing that the double grave was almost full I gave the cemetery trust long & involved proof of my direct descendancy (took everything but fingerprints) and took over trusteeship of the grave together with my two sons. When I say 'took over, I forgot to mention the $1000 costs of putting stamps on the beautiful new certificates we were given as 'ID' to our trusteeship........................................................... Hello Cara Appreciate your willingness to look up ancestors for the list. I am looking for cemetery info, obits on my ggggrandfather James Laverty (Lafferty) or his brother John Laverty (Lafferty). Believe they were born between 1800 to 1810 in County Antrim, in or near Armoy, Loughguile or Ballycastle. They were catholic. James would have married a Margaret (maiden name unknown) around 1828 to 1830. Margaret and sons James and Robert emigrated to USA in 1849. Believe husband and father James born about 1800-10 would have died before they emigrated, putting his death around 1840 to 1848. Any assistance you can give would be greatly appreciated. Hi Cara: Thanks for your offer. I am looking for McFarlan and Boyd - married around 1845 and came to Canada around that time as well. Think around Tyrone, Armagh or Antrim areas. Know nothing more on those two, as for family left in Ireland. Hi Cara: I am looking for PURTELL/PURTILL/PURTILE, etc mainly in Co Limerick, but possibly eastern Kerry as well. My John Purtell was born between 1811 and 1820 and married Mary Ann Madigan. Their first child, Margaret was born in Aug 1840 in Kilcolman, Co Limerick. The family lived in Duncaha townland. John and Mary Ann came to the States about 1850. I have found some stones in Ardah (sp?) that I believe are family left behind. Thanks, Patti Lakeville, MI USA
Hi Cara! I am searching for the Glynn family in Newcastle - Athenry, County Galway. Specifically, I am looking for graves of Owen Thomas Glynn, Ann Brennan Glynn and Peter Glynn. Any assistance will certainly be appreciated! Thanks! John F. Glynn glynnwood@sbcglobal.net
I am new to this list. My g-grandparents Isaac Caldwell and wife Margaret Jane Kelly emigrated to U.S. in 1880s. Their children were all born in Tullyveery (now called Shrigley apparently) near Killyleagh, County Down. I don't have parents or siblings names for either of them. I have hit a brick wall and wonder if there are family gravestones in that area that might provide a clue --- does anyone know? It's possible I can visit there next spring. There are ongoing postings from folks who wonder where a community is located. May I suggest to the list administrators that they include a referral and link to www.seanruad.com as a list tagline? This is a great site! How fortunate that someone took the responsibility of keeping the site online after the death or its creator a few years ago!
