    2. Cara, Many thanks for your offer. You mention JOHNSTON and MURPHY from the burial book. Would you kindly see if you have anything about the following: MARTHA McKEOWN JOHNSTON -- wife of ARTHUR Johnston and mother of MARTHA and HANNAH. She would be my gg-grandmother. I have no other information. Any MURPHY with a son named JAMES and possibly a ROSE in the family. Appreciate your time and willingness to do the lookup. Peace. 2. Hi Cara, Thanks for all you do, you are a gem... A few ames interested me on your list... KELLY....CROZIER...MATTHEWS My great grandparents came from Meath in 1873...they were married in St Pat's, Trim in 1871. They were Kate BANNON & John KELLY. They both worked on an estate in Phillistown, he a land steward, she a servant. I know Kate's parents were Michael BANNON & Mary GOREY, but do not know where Kate was born, but 3 of her younger siblings were born in Trim. Michael was a labourer. I don't know from where they came originally. John KELLY's parents were Arthur KELLY & Alice <unkn>. I don't know where John was born or any siblings. In the family plot in Jersey City is an Annie CROZIER & her son Alexander. They both died in childbirth. Annie's husband was also Alexander CROZIER. I thought perhaps this was Kate's younger sister, Ann BANNON, but it's only speculation. I haven't gotten a death certificate, but the age is about right. James MATTHEWS/MATHEWS was born abt 1830ish & was in the US in 1850. I don't have any more info on him...don't know where he came from, parents, siblings, etc. Can you give me any more nformation on these names you have listed? Thank you so much... I wonder if anyone has come across them in their research, and if anyone has advice for finding more information out about them. Any help or advice would be appreciated. James McKEON (McKEOWN) of Ballyclare (Ballycor), Antrim born about 1823 (father also named James)and his wife Sarah HOUSTON (from Rashee, father named Thomas)who were married in 1845, their son David McKEOWN born about 1859, Ballyclare. (David immigrated to New Zealand aged 21). I am sure James and Sarah would have had more children between 1845 when they were married and 1859 when David was born, would like to know how to find more siblings. Kind Regards Dorothy Derecourt

He left a wife and young children and hopefully the gravestone may have those details or, those of his parents. adrienne in NZ

    1. USING THE OLDER SOURCES
    2. Cara_Links
    3. A source that is particularly hard to handle is the older newspapers of Ireland as they are so large, and are very tedious to search. The NLI -Dublin did index the Freemen's Journal 1763-1771 but that is now not available for perusal. Newspapers are treasure troves for families such as the landed gentry, merchants, medium sized tradesmen and craftsmen. They are totally useless for farmers, and the small land holder, these people tended to be ignored by the press. Information in the main to be found is marriages. Obituary notices and birth notices were confined to the "rich". So if you are not able to find an obituary notice, in early Irish newsprint, you would have to address where your family was on the social ladder of those times. And apart from isolated areas where early registers exist, or where they are covered by the 1821 census, the years between, 1800-1830 prove a decisive obstacle to the farming community, who were of course the bulk of the population in Ireland in the early 19th Century. It is not easy to foresee how we can overcome this problem, even by future extensive indexing of the extant sources; as one of the saddest features of Irish Genealogy is the generations of neglect of records and indeed of recording records. Cheers Cara

    1. TRADITIONAL IRISH CHRISTMAS
    2. Cara_Links
    3. A Traditional Irish Christmas The Traditional year in Ireland provides a calendar of customs based on Folk Tradition dating back to its Neolithic farming ancestors of six thousand years ago. The Feast of Christmas recalls the joy of Christendom at the birth of the Saviour, a rejoicing fully enjoyed by Irish tradition. There is the lighting of the Christmas candle by the youngest child to welcome the Holy Family into the home. There are the titbits given to the animals in memory of the first to adore Him, the ox and the ass of Bethlehem. There is the churchgoing, the visit to the Crib, the presents and feasting. But behind that there are the echoes of the older festival of Midwinter. What other explanation couth there be for the Hunting of the Wren on St Stephens Day, 26th December, when groups of young men, gaily dressed and playing music from house to house ( or pub to pub) announcing they have killed 'The Wran, the Wran, the king of all Bird's and requesting contributions toward his burial? Needless to say the money gathered is spent on a party with plenty of music, dancing, eating and drinking. And what of Christmas Rhymers or Mummers, a group of young men who perform a little play, the main feature of which is a duel between two champions, in which one is killed to be revived again by a skilled Doctor. Is this, as some think, a survival of some ancient ceremony representing the death of the Old year and the revival of the New? The questions will always be asked - How did it all begin? Passed down through more than 200 generations, some of the festivals are so old that one can only guess where such a rich assembly of belief, custom and ceremonial, of story, song and prophecy came from in the first place. But I do recall my first Christmas in Arklow, Co Wicklow, a trip to Dublin to see the lights spectacular, and the shortest of days, returning to a coal fire, and a warm toddy, memories, that remain with me long after the event. And a longing to be there now, with my extended family and friends, but this year its Christmas in Tasmania again, no so bad, the weather doing a really Irish jig, one day fine the next so cold. But to each and every lister, wherever you are, in the world , whatever you may or may not be doing for Christmas I with my (himself) and family would like to take this moment in time to wish you all a Merry Christmas- And good luck in your pursuit of your Irish ancestors. Cara, Himself, and the rest of the family

    1. DORGAN-FLYNN and HARTNETT-DUHIG: EAST CORK
    2. BILL DORGAN
    3. > Listers: > Looking for any information regarding these two families: DORGAN- > FLYNN and HARTNETT-DUHIG of East Cork. > I have an extended database about the descendants of these two > families: Please visit: www.billdorgan.com. > > > PATRICK DORGAN (Born about 1830, Ballybraher, Cloyne Parish, East > Cork and died before 1886) and ANN FLYNN (Born about 1830, > Ballyandreen, Cloyne Parish, East Cork and died before 1886). Griffith's Valuation of County Cork in 1851-1853 (LDS film #0830537) lists a Patrick DARGAN (a variant spelling of DORGAN). This Patrick DARGAN is the brother of John DORGAN and the father of Patrick J. DORGAN. Patrick DARGAN had a house, offices, and land in Carrigkilter: 14 acres, 5 perches, 3 roods 21 perches and 10 acres, 3 roods and 25 perches. He is also listed in the Valuation of Tenements 1855 in Carrigkilter as Patrick DARGAN. Maurice Cusack leased the land in Carrigkilter before 1855 and Patrick DARGAN later leased the same land about 1855. The landlord's name was Thomas Garde Durdin, a descendant of William Penn who founded Pennsylvania. Thomas Garde Durdin would arrive in East Cork from England each year to collect the rents. While in Cork he stayed at one of his estates: Shanagarry "Castle" or Sunville House. In the 1855 Landlord Index of “County Cork Encumbered Estates” (Volume 4, FHL Film No. 25883), Thomas Garde Durdin, Esq. sold his land holdings at auction on 19 June 1855. At the time he held the “Lands of Killderrig, Carrigkilter, Coalvodig otherwise Sunviille, Ballybraher West, Snugborough, Ballyronahan, Ballybraher East, Ballinamona, and part of Shanagarry - 19 June 1855 - (lot maps).” This is the date that Patrick Dargan “bought” his farm ... a farm that he had formerly “leased” from Thomas Garde Durdin. This is the first recorded Dorgan “deed of sale” since the English Reformation of the late 1500s. I have sent for a copy of this deed fom the Dublin Archives. Patrick DARGAN'S yearly rent was 17 English Pounds for the land and 1 Pound, 5 Shillings for the buildings. If he improved the land, the rent would increase each year. Thomas Garde Durdin died in 1867. In the 1880s, the Land Reform Acts went into effect sponsored by Michael Davitt of the Irish Parliament and later by Charles Stewart Parnell a member of the House of Commons of the English Parliament. The Land Acts sought reform in three areas called the three F's: Freedom of Rent, Freedom of Tenure and Freedom from Eviction without trial. Amazingly, the Protestant landowners peacefully went back to England in the 1880s and 1890s never to return to their estates. The tenant farmers continued to pay their rents to the State in the 1880s and 1890s. After the 1920s the State made these tenant farmers the actual "owners" of the lands they once leased! Patrick DARGAN died before his son, Patrick J. DORGAN, married Mary HARTNETT on November 26, 1886. He is documented as "deceased" on their marriage certificat > > JOHN HARTNETT (Born about 1830, Garryvoe, Cloyne Parish, East > Cork) and MARY DUHIG (Born about 1830, Ballymacoda, Cloyne Parish, > East Cork). Here is what I know about John Hartnett: According to Griffith's Valuation of 1851-1853, there were many HARTNETTs listed in the Parishes surrounding Ballycotton, but there is only one listed in Garryvoe: JOHN HARTNETT, Garryvoe location, Garryvoe Lower. He is the father of Mary Hartnett, the wife of Patrick J. Dorgan. He owned 19 acres, 26 perches and 1 acre, 2 roods, 30 perches. There are other HARTNETTs: Denis, James, and Patrick. One of these HARTNETTs, perhaps Denis, was the grandfather of Mary Hartnett and the other two were her father's brothers, her uncles. Denis HARTNETT belonged to the parish of Kilmahon in Ballybraher. He had 20 acres, 7 perches and 2 acres, 3 roods, 36 perches. James HARTNETT belonged to the parish of Kilmahon in Ballylongane. He had 24 acres, 3 roods, 9 perches and 2 acres, 1 rood, 11 perches. Patrick HARTNETT belonged to the parish of Kilmahon in Monagurra. He had Herd's house and 15 acres, 4 perches and 42 acres, 17 perches. Monagurra and Ballybraher are adjoining townlands while Ballylongane is between Shanagarry and Garryvoe. The 1766 census of Cloyne has one "HARNETT". His religion is noted as "Papist". There are no HARTNETTs listed in Ballybraher or Carrigkilter. There is a John Hartnett listed in Ballycotton and several Hartnett's in or around Ballyandreen. John Hartnett is listed as the father of Mary Catherine Hartnett on her death certificate. The HARTNETTs are most likely buried in the Mogeely Cemetery. > > I don't have any information concerning ANN FLYNN and MARY DUHIG. > > This is what I know about ANN FLYNN: > > Johanna Flynn appears in the records as Ann, Johanna and Nancy > Flynn (Flinn and Fling)!
