    1. RE: [IRL~CEMS] Black Irish
    2. Mary Gallentine
    3. I will make an attempt. During the Spanish Armada it is believed by some that a ship sank. On this ship of Spanish soldiers that sank off the Irish Coast were 2 men by the name of Rea. Anyway, these soldiers or sailors made their way into Co. Down where they settled and married. Because they had very dark hair and eyes, their offspring are known as Black Irish. Now this has ben the subject of alot of discussions. It may or maynot be true. 1. [IRL~CEMS] Churches & Graveyards
    2. Jane Lyons
    3. The churches and graveyards in a number of Irish counties have been surveyed as part of an on-going Archaeological Survey of Ireland. The lists pertaining to Churches and graveyards should be of use to any genealogical researcher regardless of whether or not they ever visit Ireland. In some instances they name those churches which are considered to be, or have been parish churches for an area giving the townland that the church was located it. They also gives some indication of whether or not there was a graveyard associated with the church, as well as graveyards that were not located in the grounds of a church. Plus, it gives us some idea of the period churches were in use. 1. [IRL~CEMS] McCUIRCK/CUIRCK/CUIRC
    2. mkirk
    3. Sending this to several lists, so please excuse duplications. I am interested in the history of, and any information on, the CUIRCK surname. I was told at the National Library in Dublin that it would have been pronounced the same as KIRK. My father once said that he had heard that our last name originally started with a "C." We are Catholic. I found a tombstone in the Walterstown Cemetery SE of Navan, Co. Meath, for James(d.1955) and Ellen(d.1971) McCUIRCK of Dean Hill. Thanks to that nice guy, Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts, I know that Dean Hill is a neighborhood in Navan. If you want to see a photo of the tombtone, contact me off-list. Many of the families from Walterstown were/are present in the village in Quebec where my father was born (Ste. Sophie): BYRNE, GORMAN, GRIFFIN, HANLON, KELLY, McKENNA, MULLEN, O'NEILL, REID, & SCULLY. Christopher McKENNA was born in Walterstown circa 1792/1794. He married Catherine MULVANY/MULVANEY (b.circa 1799) and their first child, Christopher, was born in Ireland 1818/1820. My aunt married their descendant, John McKENNA, in Ste. Sophie, Quebec, Canada. Thanks for any information, Margaret Kirk
