Dear listers, The topic of this list is Ireland Cemeteries and the lister who so kindly posted all the rules etc of list forgot that this is so The mail from a listers telling of her worries of not being able to enter a cemetery must ( In Ireland ) must well fall into this category This list is for sharing information of graveyards in Ireland and we need to know that they are locked and we cannot get into them and how we may solve the problem its a long way from Australia for example to suddenly find that you cannot enter a graveyard because we do not know who has the key etc.......... I like everyone to get along and there is no need for rules and regulations to be quoted to people all the time ........... The Topic of this list and the past emails fall well within the guide lines ......... Topic: A mailing list for anyone searching for their ancestors in cemeteries in Ireland or interested in preserving historical information about these cemeteries (including locating graves, decedents within the graves, cemeteries which have been indexed on the internet and in other written forms, and care of tombstones and the inscriptions thereon) and sharing information about them. I am sorry that I have had to raise this issue but I do not like listers being afraid to list there thoughts and share their needs with us because they are concerned they will be ostracised by the list No more of these tactics please CARA List Admin

Cara - Thank you for this. The "delete" key is my friend whenever a posting does not interest me. It is much simpler than taking time to respond in an unkind manner. We have each joined this list because we are searching. May we all support each other in whatever ways we can in our individual searchings. Helen I was chastised for making this simple remark *that it is a mammoth task* by one of the listers and I concede that their are some of the graveyards that have been indexed BUT not all........ I am sorry that visitors to Ireland ( yourself included)are now finding what I found also that most of the older or even some of the younger churches and graveyards are being locked to any one who is genuinely intereseted in looking BUT when i asked why I was told it was to prevent vandalism...........as sign of the times I guess sad to say the least but one of those things that is happening more and more in Ireland. I am also sorry that your trip to Ireland did not give you very much joy re your family history but you did get to go where your fore fathers have been before you so that was a megga plus.... But dont lose heart some where sometime someone has a key that will fit your jigsaw maybe as yet they have not found the rootsweb listings to place their data on......... So take heart we all have these terrible huge holes in our Irish research, Yours in gene CARA ----- Original Message ----- From: "Helen McCurdy" <helarmc@sympatico.ca> To: <IRELAND-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 19, 2004 5:56 AM Subject: Re: [IRL-CEMETERIES] Re: Cemeteries Sligo and Dublin > Thank you CARA for your comments, the useful information and suggestions in > reply to my question regarding cemeteries in Sligo and Dublin. > > I agree it would be a mammoth task to index/transcribe the cemeteries, > however, I had wondered if volunteers had gone at the job. > In Canada volunteers have indexed/transcribed many cemeteries and on > completion the information is compiled for sale. > > I believe I corresponded with you last year just before we left on our > genealogy trip to Ireland and you were so kind to provide the names and > descriptions from Wills etc. for the various surnames we were searching for. > > We couldn't make a connection as we did not have then and do not now have a > parish for our surnames. > > The surnames are McCURDY/MacCURDY (my husband's line) Dublin, > LEIGHTON/LIGHTON and ISLAND/ILAND my lines, county Sligo. > > The bits and pieces we found in Dublin for the McCurdy surname could not be > linked to what we know, which is: > Daniel MacCurdy, born Dublin, July 30, 1792. Thank you CARA for your comments, the useful information and suggestions in reply to my question regarding cemeteries in Sligo and Dublin. I agree it would be a mammoth task to index/transcribe the cemeteries, however, I had wondered if volunteers had gone at the job. In Canada volunteers have indexed/transcribed many cemeteries and on completion the information is compiled for sale. I believe I corresponded with you last year just before we left on our genealogy trip to Ireland and you were so kind to provide the names and descriptions from Wills etc. for the various surnames we were searching for. We couldn't make a connection as we did not have then and do not now have a parish for our surnames. The surnames are McCURDY/MacCURDY (my husband's line) Dublin, LEIGHTON/LIGHTON and ISLAND/ILAND my lines, county Sligo. The bits and pieces we found in Dublin for the McCurdy surname could not be linked to what we know, which is: Daniel MacCurdy, born Dublin, July 30, 1792. Joined 25th Foot Kings Own, July 25, 1807. West Indies, 18th Feb. 1810. Married Sarah Eliza Allder, January 11, 1816, St. Michael's Cathedral, Bridgetown, Barbados. (No information at all for Sarah Eliza Allder). In W.I. at two different periods (can't find out where he was in between service in W.I.). The children (William Philip, Elizabeth Louisa, Daniel, Stephen Augustus and Sarah Ann, all born in W.I., the two girls claim to have been educated in England). Arrived at Montreal, Quebec June 7, 1841 with 74th Regiment of Foot (Quarter-Master) from Barbados aboard the transport Cornwall No. 3. Died at Guelph, Ontario, Canada, January 21, 1855. We were told at the RCB in Dublin that without a parish for Daniel we would be unable to search for a baptism record. We drove from Dublin to Sligo Town and ran into virtually the same situation. No parish, no search. I know only that my Leighton's and Islands came from County Sligo. The Leighton surname was found twice in the computer base at the Heritage Centre. Previous research on those two surnames do not appear to be connected to my GEORGE LEIGHTON, b. c. 1803, his wife MARGARET ISLAND b. c. 1800, (George and Margaret likely married in the mid to late 1820s) their son JOHN L. LEIGHTON, b. Nov. 1837, their daughter ANN LEIGHTON b. April 17th, 1845 Sligo/Connaught. (Other children, Margaret b. 1828-30, perhaps Joseph b. 1827.) Without a parish for these people it was not possible to search for dates of marriage or baptism. We went to St. John's Church (CofI) in Sligo Town hoping to walk through the cemetery. Upon arrival we found big iron gates locked preventing entry to the church or the church property including the cemetery. We asked around but no-one including the Heritage Centre people could advise us on how we might visit the church and the cemetery. The best I could do was to take some photos of the lovely old church through the bars of the locked gate. We thoroughly enjoyed our trek through Ireland but like so many others who have traveled to Ireland looking for roots we came away disappointed that we could find no trace of our Irish roots. Perhaps next time and there will be a next time! Thanks again CARA. Thank you Gwen for the pertinent and useful information regarding cemeteries in Ireland. I realize the task of indexing graveyards is indeed a big job. Many cemeteries in Canada have been indexed/transcribed by local volunteers and/or assisted by others who are interested in seeing the job completed. The information is then printed and sold. I wondered if perhaps the same might be true for Ireland or parts of the Island (other countries too for that matter). Good afternoon Without getting into a lot of detail I'm looking for WINDELL/WINDEL/WINDLE in Nothern Ireland, specifically Londonderry. There were only 15 WINDELLs in the Griffith's Valuation for all of Ireland and only one in Londonderry. There is also an Co. Antrim connection through MOLYNEAUX. Hi I was in Ireland,in Killinchy 3 years ago trying to find some Wightman graves. I was looking for Michael Wightman and his wife Jane Gibson. They had 4 children, Michael b 1828, Robert 1831, James 1833, and Flora 1838. James emigrated to Delaware, Ontario, Canada and married a Scott. They are buried in Cook's Cemetery, near Strathroy. Sunday Thompson We met Bill and Molly (Wightman) Hanna a few miles from there. They were real nice and we had a nice visit. I think that they have lost our address. If you know them please pass this on to them. They have a daughter Isabella who works in Belfast. I forgot to get her e-mail address before I left.

I am looking information of the death of John Ponsonby Mullan, his son John Mullan was born in Loughlinstown in 1871,although the family on a trip to Ireland could find no record of the birth,John Mullan(born 1871)we are told was orphaned at a very early age,his mother was Mary Stanley,John Mullan(born 1871)migrated to Australia in 1888,so any help with burial information on either John Ponsonby Mullan and/or Mary Stanley would be appreciated,if the information on John being orphaned at an early age is correct, their deaths would have been shortly after 1871. Regards Brian Mullan
