    3. Would like to find the marriage of Michael McCARTHY(McCARTY) to Johannah(Hannah,Johanne)READON(RIORDAN). They had 3 known children: 1-Julia,b. 5 Jul 1851 2-Anna(Bridget), b. 3 Jul 1854; 3-Jonny, b. abt. 1855 - Family tradition says born in County Cork. They arrived in New York City on 21 Jun 1855 aboard the ship "Richard Robinson". #2 child, "Bridget", is listed with this given name on the ship list and in 1860 Rock Co.,WI Census, but listed as "Anna", but several other census records list her as Anna. Are the given names Bridget and Anna interchangeable? Or could they be a first and middle given names? Is there a website for nicknames for Irish given names? Appreciate any help. 3. Bridget and Anna are not interchangeable .They are 2 seperate names Anna is usually Ann or Anne but in this family may well be short for Johanna .Short for Bridget is usually Bridie or could be Breda or Biddy,Bid ,Bríd,Brideen etc .Are you certain that the 2 names refer to the same child ? Hint :---If doing lookups for Riordan always check O Riordan as well as this version is more common Anne in Ireland And Mc Carthy is a very ,very common name in Co Cork ! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Renee Harris" <harrisgr27@yahoo.com> To: <IRELAND-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 26, 2006 6:16 PM Subject: [IRELAND] Michael McCARTHY=Johannah REARDON-Cork > Would like to find the marriage of Michael > McCARTHY(McCARTY) to > Johannah(Hannah,Johanne)READON(RIORDAN). > They had 3 known children: > 1-Julia,b. 5 Jul 1851 2-Anna(Bridget), b. 3 Jul > 1854; 3-Jonny, b. abt. 1855 - Family tradition says > born in County Cork. > They arrived in New York City on 21 Jun 1855 aboard > the ship "Richard Robinson". #2 child, "Bridget", is > listed with this given name on the ship list and in > 1860 Rock Co.,WI Census, but listed as "Anna", but > several other census records list her as Anna. > Are the given names Bridget and Anna > interchangeable? 3. I have heard that often when Irish families came to the US they tried hard NOT to be identifiably Irish. Often they used a different name, maybe their middle name, rather than use one that was definitely Irish. Bridget was one of those names. So it is possible that her family called her by her middle name. Just a thought.
