RESOURCE: The 1901 Censuses of Ireland include information on the head of household, others enumerated in the household, occupation, marital status, where born (which may not be where they were living in 1901), their relationship to the head of household. Often a second surname is given, which can help to identify a particular family. Census data is being transcribed to at the Leitrim-Roscommon.com website for several Irish counties. Four censuses are complete - Leitrim, Roscommon, Sligo and Mayo. Several others are being transcribed. One would want to conduct a soundex surname search. Playing around with the 1901 search engine, and just entering the word pensioner in the "others enumerated in household" search field, I came up with 166 matches for pensioners to include the following: Army; army pensioner born Co. Tipperary; Boar war; military; naval; railway; prison service; police; RIC; infantry; soldier; National School; teacher; excise pensioner; artillery; navy; London police; American army; Coast Guard (b. England), asylum pensioner, Connaught Rangers, Army pensioner Enniskilling Dragoons (Enniskillen?). I don't think there is a mechanism to pull up pensioners among the heads of household other than on a surname search. The 1901 censuses can be found on microfilms through the LDS (Mormon) FHCs, other. I think they may be found at Ancestry.com as part of a paid subscription, you can check and see. Example: On the 1901 Co. Wexford Census, a Mary FLIGHT (66), lady's nurse, widow, was born in Malta. In the household were Michael DOYLE (40) son-in-law, navy pensioner, Helen DOYLE (34) daughter, born in India, and Mary VENN (17) servant. This household was in Duncannon townland, St. James & Dunbrody Parish, Shelbourne Barony, Co. Wexford, Ireland. Try typing the name of a county or country on the 1901 census search engine into the "enumerated with others" field. There were 64 households with references to India, and there were 415 with references to Scotland from 1901 censuses information transcribed so far on Cos. Westmeath, Wexford, Galway, Sligo, Mayo, Donegal, Leitrim and Roscommon. Probably worth your while to check now and in the future. This is on an ongoing project. You can try England, etc. Again, I couldn't find a mechanism to call up heads of household (except by surname or given name). Jean
