    1. From 'The Clare Anthology'
    2. Hi all, From 'The Clare Anthology' is this Percy French poem. It is an odd read, but if read aloud it has a sound and energy of its own, as well as a very comforting feeling. Hard to explain. I got this book from the CLASP site: http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/library/local-studies/locstudi1.htm at the Co Clare Library site, and am enjoying this book immensely. It is a collection of Clare stories by Clare people and people who visited Clare. I can hardly put it down. Anyway, enjoy: Jim McNamara 'Are Ye Right There, Michael?' A Lay of the Wild West Clare You may talk of Columbus's sailing Across the Atlantical sea But he never tried to go railing From Ennis as far as Kilkee. You run for the train in the mornin', The excursion train starting at eight, You're there when the clock gives the warnin', And there for an hour you'll wait. (Spoken): And as you're waiting in the train, You'll hear the guard sing this refrain: -- 'Are ye right there, Michael? Are ye right? Do you think that we'll be there before the night? Ye've been so long in startin' - That ye couldn't say for sartin' - Still ye might now, Michael, so ye might!' They find out where the engine's been hiding, And it drags you to sweet Corofin Says the guard, 'Back her down on the siding, There's the goods from Kilrush comin' in.' Perhaps it comes in in two hours, Perhaps it breaks down on the way; 'If it does,' says the guard, 'be the powers, We're here for the rest of the day!' (Spoken): And while you sit and curse your luck, The train backs down into a truck! 'Are ye right there, Michael, are ye right? Have ye got the parcel there for Mrs. White? Ye haven't! Oh, begorra! Say it's comin' down to-morra - And it might now, Michael, so it might!' At Lahinch the sea shines like a jewel, With joy you are ready to shout, When the stoker cries out, 'There's no fuel, And the fire's taytotally out. But hand up that bit of a log there - I'll soon have ye out of the fix; There's a fine clamp of turf in the bog there;' And the rest go a-gatherin' sticks. (Spoken): And while you're breakin' bits of trees, You hear some wise remarks like these: -- 'Are ye right there, Michael? Are ye right? Do you think that ye can get the fire to light? 'Oh, an hour you'll require, For the turf it might be drier - 'Well, it might now, Michael, so it might!' Kilkee! Oh, you never get near it! You're in luck if the train brings you back, For the permanent way is so queer, it Spends most of its time off the track, Uphill the ould engin' is climbin', While the passengers push with a will; You're in luck when you reach Ennistymon For all the way home is down-hill. (Spoken): And as you're wobbling throught the dark, You hear the guard make his remark: -- 'Are ye right there, Michael? Are ye right? Do you think that ye'll be home before it's light?' 'Tis all dependin' whether The ould engine' howlds together -' 'And it might now, Michael, so it migth!' Percy French

    3. Hi I have a grandmother Anna NEARY who was born in Ireland about 1855-56. She also had a sister Sarah NEARY, born in Ireland about 1850-51. In all the years I have been looking for their origins in Ireland, I have not been able to find anything on them at all. I tried the census of 1900-10-20, and each time my gmother gave a different year for entering NY. I do not know the parents names, which as made it more difficult. Can you help me. Jerome J. 3. Hi Judy, was wondering if you could do a look up for a Mary Ann McLaughlin/McLaughton/McLoughton/OLouchlin. McLoughton is the name used the most on the birth certificated of her children, but I suppose it was how the recorder interpreted what was said. Her marriage certificate gives her name as MCLOUGHLIN, daughter of DENYS MCLOUGHLIN and she was from Londonderry. Thanks very much for your kind offer . 3. LINES WRITTEN ON A SEAT ON THE GRAND CANAL, DUBLIN O commemorate me where there is water, Canal water preferably, so stilly Greeny at the heart of summer. Brother Commemorate me thus beautifully. Where by a lock niagarously roars The falls for those who sit in the tremendous silence Of mid-July. No one will speak in prose Who finds his way to these Parnassian islands. A swan goes by head low with many apologies, Fantastic light looks through the eyes of bridges -- And look! a barge comes bringing from Athy And other far-flung towns mythologies. O commemorate me with no hero-courageous Tomb -- just a canal-bank seat for the passer-by. -- Patrick KAVANAGH

    1. "Two Sons" - Laoiseach Mac an Bhaird (16th c. Monaghan poet) - trans. Thos. KINSELLA
    2. Jean R.
    3. Laoiseach Mac an Bhaird was a Monaghan poet of the late 16th century. In this poem criticism is aimed at one of two brothers who has apparently chosen Tudor ways, while the other has taken to the hills in revolt. TWO SONS You follow foreign ways and shave your thick-curled head: O slender fist, my choice! you are no good son of Donnchadh. If you were, you would not yield your hair to a foreign fashion -- the fairest feature in Fodla's land -- and your head done up in a crown. Little you think of your yellow hair, but that other detests their locks and going cropped in the foreign way. Your manners are little like. He loved no foreign ways, our ladies' darling, Eogan Ban, nor bent his will to the stranger, but took to the wilds instead. Eogan Ban thinks little of your views. He would give his britches gladly and accept a rag for a cloak and ask no coat nor hose. He hates the jewelled spur on his boot at the narrow of his foot, or stockings in the foreign style, nor allows their locks upon him. A blunt rapier wouldn't kill a fly holds no charm for Donnchadh's son, nor a bodkin weighing at his rump as he climbs to the gathering place. Little his wish for a gold cloak or a high Holland collar; a golden bangle would only annoy or a satin scarf to the heel. He has no thought for a feather bed but would rather lie on rushes, more at ease -- Donnchadh's good son -- in a rough-wattled hut than a tower top. Throng of horse in the mouth of a gap, foot-soldiers' fight, the hard fray, are some of Donnchadh's son's delights, and looking for fight with the foreigner. You are not like Eogan Ban. They laught as you step to the mounting block. A pity you cannot see your fault, as you follow foreign ways. -- Laoiseach Mac an Bhaird - translation, Thomas Kinsella
