    1. "Great Uncle Edgar At Grandmother's Funeral" - Thomas ORR/Scotch-Irish roots (contemp.)
    2. Jean R.
    3. GREAT UNCLE EDGAR AT GRANDMOTHER'S FUNERAL They were twins, born at the end of the last century Of rugged stock in the hardscrabble farm country Of central Maine. She raised six children and wrote poetry, Surviving two husbands, while he was a dairy farmer, Spare of words, who married late and lost his wife. Because the pull of blood is strong, they found each other Again, taking up old age together, uneasily, After lives apart. He accused her of having gentleman callers, And she fussed at his quirks, like picking up pennies, But he always told her, with bred-in-the-bone frugality, That two cents was a down payment on a postage stamp. They kept each other warm with cats in winter and put out a garden Every spring until their ninetieth year. And when They moved into the rest home, they traded hands of rummy Until she dozed or he lost track, since he heard less and less And wandered more and more around the grounds, looking For his cows. The day Grandmother died, the nurses said He didn't know the difference, but his niece took him To the funeral parlor, where he sat beside the open casket For the longest time without a word. Then, looking at her, He said, with slight annoyance, "Well, Eva, play your card!" She already had. Her hand was blessed by the King of Hearts, And a better game was just beginning. Maybe Edgar really Understood and was hurling all his wit, with brave recall, Against the loss, for afterward he sometimes crept Into her room, where he sat in the creaky old rocker, And the silence ached with that lonesome scrannel sound. -- Tom Orr, from "Hammers in the Fog," (1995/Restoration Press, Indianapolis, IN), copyrighted material posted with permission. This tender tribute to sibling love was composed by Thomas Alan Orr, born in Bangor, ME, who grew up in the hill country of western MA. He graduated from Gordon College and moved to Indianapolis in 1972, has worked in human services and work force development. He has Scotch-Irish roots. Tom is a member of the Writers' Center of Indianapolis, and since 1986 has lived on a small farm in Shelby Co, where he raises rabbits and poultry.

    3. Judy, Thanks so much for your help to everyone. If your are not "researched out" could you try this one? I have no family left to ask and I am at a dead end. My grandfather's name was JOHN JOSEPH MURPHY . I was told from County Cork but that's all . In the Jersey City census of 1910 he was 26 years old so I'm guessing his year of birth at 1884. (In case this helps he had three sons John, William and Vincent. Maybe he named them after his father or brothers or something?) Thanks for anything you might be able to find. I know there are a million Murphys! Maureen

    3. Hi Judy I missed your lookup offer, and when I discovered it, I added my request to others. I may have been late. If possible could you do a lookup on Anna Neary circa 1855-56, and her sister Sarah circa 1850-51. I would want to know their origins in Ireland or their parents name, so I could continue my research on them. Thank You Jerome J. 3. I have 3 siblings, STEWART or STEWARD, all born in "Northern Ireland", posssibly in Londonderry , Parish os Tamlaught O'Crilly. They came to the US, John abt 1852. David & Margaret came later, sailing from "Londonderry" on the "Ship Mohongo" arriving 8 May 1855, in Philadelphia. PA. These 3 should be in the 1851 Census, Perhaps with a father "Arthur STEWART and mother Mary LORIG/LAUGHRYY Could there be birth cerificates available, and where to write for information? John STEWART born abt 1835, (my Great-grandfather) David STEWART b.28 Dec 1840, Margaret STEWART b.Apr 1847 It may be they were from another county in Ireland, but since they sailed from Londonderry, it may be they were from thate. Blessings to you for your time and patience. 2. For those of you who are planning on travelling to Ireland, this museum is really worth seeing. Also in the same area is Craggaunowen a representation of 4th & 5th Century - Bronze Age exhibits of how they lived. Very well done .. open from mid April- Mid October. My 2 cents............ 1. Immigration
    2. Marc Fitzsimmons
    3. Hello; This is probably an ignorant question, but are there immigration records for people who immigrated to the Liverpool area from Ireland in the mid to late 1800's? My Great Grandfather, Thomas Fitzsimmons (two "m"s), was born in Ireland about 1859 and was living in Liverpool in 1886 when he married my Great Grandmother, Frances Williamson. I know his father was John Fitzsimmons because of the marriage certificate. I know Thomas Fitzsimmons was born in Ireland because of the 1891 census in Liverpool that listed Ireland as his birthplace. I've found a John Fitzsimons (one "m") and Isabella Carse married in the Presbyterian Church, Killyleagh, Down, Ireland in 1858 and a Thomas Fitzsimmons (one "m") christened in the Presbyterian Church, Killyleagh, Down, Ireland in 1859 with a John Fitzsimons (one "m") listed as the father. So, I can only narrow down the immigration to between 1859 and 1886. Can anyone point me in the right direction as far as any records of such an immigration? Thanks, Marc Fitzsimmons
