GAELTACHT Bartley Costello, eighty years old, sat in his silver-grey tweeds on a kitchen chair, at his door in Carraroe, the sea only yards away, smoking a pipe, with a pint of porter beside his boot: "For the past twenty years I've eaten nothing only periwinkles, my own hands got them off those rocks. You're a quarter my age, if you'd stick to winkles you'd live as long as me, and keep as spry." In the Liverpool Bar, at the North Wall, on his way to join his children over there, an old man looked at me, then down at his pint of rich Dublin stout. He pointed at the black glass: "Is lu i an Ghaeilge na an t-uisce sa ngloine sin." ("The Gaelic is less than the water in the glass.") Beartla Confhaola, prime of his manhood, driving between the redweed and the rock-fields, driving through the sunny treeless quartz glory of Carna, answered the foreigners' glib pity, pointing at the small black cows: "You won't get finer anywhere than those black porry cattle." In a pub near there, one of the locals finally spoke to the townie: "Labhraim le strainseiri. Creidim gur choir bheith ag labhairt le strainseiri." ("I speak with strangers. I believe it's right to be speaking with strangers."). Proud as a man who'd claim: "I made an orchard of a rock-field, bougainvillea clamber my turf-ricks." A Dublin tourist on a red-quarter strand hunting firewood found the ruins of a boat, started breaking the struts out -- an old man came, he shook his head, and said: "Aa, a mhac: na bi ag briseadh baid." ("Ah son: don't be breaking boats."). The low walls of rock-fields in the west are a beautiful clean white. There are chinks between the neat white stones to let the wind through safe, you can see the blue sun through them. But coming eastward in the same county, the walls grow higher, get grey: an ugly grey. And the chinks disappear: through those walls you can see nothing. Then at least you come to the city, beautiful with salmon basking becalmed black below a bridge over the pale-green Corrib; and ugly with many shopkeepers looking down on men like Bartley Costello and Beartla Confhaola because they speak in Irish, eat periwinkles, keep small black porry cattle, and on us because we are strangers. -- Pearse Hutchinson

BALLINA CHRONICLE Wednesday, April 17, 1850 This week more persons have left our port, destined for America, than any other during the season. Yesterday (Friday) the "Mars" and "Foyle" Liverpool steamers, carried a large number. The following vessels called this week also: - The "Medina", a beautiful superior brig, with accommodations of a first rate character, for Quebec, with 109 passengers; the "Countess of Durham" for Quebec, 76 passengers; the "Sophi" for Halifax, 79 passengers; and the Eliza for New York, 79 passengers. The great majority were of the better class of farmers, and there were also a great many artisans and others from this and neighbouring towns. -- Waterford Mail. Emigration from this neighbourhood still continues. The coaches which run between this town and Belfast are frequently crowded with passengers on their way to America.-- Downpatrick Recorder. EMIGRATION - Two days last week the following vessels cleared out at the Custom-house of the port of Limerick - For New York, the Charles Richards, 97 passengers; for Quebec, Caledonia, 126 passengers; for New York, Waterford, 101 passengers; the Lady Peel for Quebec, 305 passengers. Total - 631. -- Limerick Chronicle. LIMERICK PETTY SESSIONS IMPORTANT TO EMIGRANTS - Michael Griffin summoned Mr. Richard Hogan, shipping agent at this port, to Messrs. Shaw, of Liverpool, to recover £7 15s. amount of passage money paid by him for self and wife to proceed to New York in a vessel which sailed form Liverpool on the 15th of March. To go into details would occupy too much space - suffice it, that the complainant reached Liverpool between one and two o'clock on the day announced for the ship to sail, produced his register, and was told she had gone off that morning. The question at issue was whether an emigrant arriving at the part of embarkation at any hour on the day specified for the ship to sail was entitled to a passage. Mr. F. Spaight, the most extensive ship owner in the south of Ireland, and in which vessels more emigrants have sailed than from any port in Ireland, decided, and in his decision was upheld by Mr. Richard Russell (also a large ship owner) and Mr. Barron, R.M., that complainant was entitled to a passage, no matter at what hour he arrived at Liverpool previous to 12 o'clock on the night of the 15th March. The Bench ruled that Griffin be refunded £7 15s. and receive 1s. a day for sustenance, from 15th March to 12th April.-- Limerick Chronicle. Any assistance appreciated. Bob Pearce
MaryPat, Can I ask if you have any death records on the following set of twins: Catherine and Ellen MAGEE. Born 8 June 1898, 32 Marchioness Street, Belfast., to Hugh MAGEE and Esther AGNEW. They are not in the 1901 census records, and I could not find them in the local chapel or cemetery. The 1911 census that 10 children had been born, but only 4 survived, which were John, SarahAnn, Hugh and Patrick. I have found the births of 2 of the deceased children (Catherine and Ellen) but have nothing on the others. Any information would be greatly apreciated. Irish Catholic Chronicle And People's News of the Week Dublin, Ireland Saturday, 30 November 1867 MICHAEL O'BRIEN, ALIAS GOULD Michael O'Brien was born near Ballymacoda, the birthplace of the ill-fated Peter Crowley. O'Brien having reserved a good average education, served his apprenticeship in the establishment of Messrs. Arnott, Grant, and Co., and afterwards spent some time at the Queen's Old Castle. He left that firm for America, where most of his friends reside, some of them in affluent circumstances. O'Brien seized with the pervading ardour of the time, joined the Northern army, and served with distinction through several campaigns. When the regiment to which he was attached was disbanded at the conclusion of the war, he returned to Liverpool, where he got into trouble in connexion with the Fenian movements. The accusation then brought against him fell to the ground and he came to this city, where he obtained employment at the Munster Arcade, where he remained till Shrove Tuesday night when he disappeared and was not hears of again till he turned up at Manchester on the recent melancholy occasion. It will be remembered that on the trial of Co. F.X. O'Brien, who was tried and convicted at the last special commission in this city, frequent reference was made to another Col. O'Brien, who is supposed to have been identified with the deceased. At that trial also a receipt was produced for certain arms taken from the residence of Mr. George Wyse, Newcastle, signed "F. Lomax, Colonel Irish Republic, South Cork Infantry." At the trial a man named Kemn swore this signature was the handwriting of Mr. F.X. O'Brien, but the prosecution declared it was not, and it is now supposed the receipt was signed by Michael O'Brien. The Irish police were on the track of deceased since March, but without result. It is supposed that he formed the fourth in the party at Kilclooney Wood, which was completed by Peter Crowley, M'Clure and Kelly on the memorable 18th of September. Deceased was a person of genteel appearance and attractive manners. LETTER FROM ALLEN The following letter, the last it is understood that was written by the ill-fated Allen, previous to his execution last Saturday, has been forwarded to us and will, were are sure, be perused with a painful interest:- Salford, New Bailey Prison, Nov. 22 TO YOU MY LOVING AND SINCERE DEAR UNCLE AND AUNT HOGAN - I suppose this is my last letter to you at the side of the grave. O! dear uncle and aunt, if you reflect on it, it is nothing. I am dying a horrible death - I am dying for Ireland, dying for the land that gave me birth, dying for the Island of Saints, and dying for liberty. Every generation of our countrymen is suffering, and where is the Irish heart could stand by unmoved? I should like to know what trouble, what passion, what mischief could separate the true Irish heart from its own native isle. Dear uncle and aunt, it is sad to be parting you all at my early age; but we must all die some day or another. A few hours more and I will breathe my last, and on English soil! Oh, that I could be buried in Ireland! what a happiness it would be to all my friends and to myself, where my countrymen could kneel on my grave! I cannot express what joy it afforded me when I found, Aunt Sarah, that you were admitted here. Dear uncle, I am sure it was not a very pleasant place I had to receive you and my aunt; but we must put up with all trials until we depart this life. I am sure it will grieve you very much to have me in such a place on the evidence of such characters that swore my life away; but I forgive them, and may God forgive them. I am dying, thank God, an Irishman and a Christian. Give my love to all my friends; same from your affectionate nephew, W.P. ALLEN. P.S. - Pray for us. Good bye, and remember me. Good bye, and may heaven protect you - the last wish of your dying nephew. W.P. ALLEN. Cathy Joynt Labath Ireland Old News http://www.IrelandOldNews.com/
THE CONNAUGHT JOURNAL Galway, Monday, September 27, 1824 DIED On the 16th instant, aged 70 years, the Reverend Raymond Hargadon, Parish Priest of Annadown. The bright assemblage of the many Christian virtues and estimable qualities which addressed the life and the apostles and integrity which invariably marked the character of this pious and exemplary Ecclesiastic, have rendered him the universal esteem and veneration. For 36 years that he resided in this parish, he was unremittingly devoted to the dearest interests of his flock, in performing with edifying fidelity and exactness the sacred functions and arduous duties of a good Pastor. His frugal habits as well as the singular kindness of the very respectable family in which he lived for many years, enabled him to be always attentive to the wants of his indigent parishioners. But his charity, his favourite and characteristic virtue, shone with increased lustre at the eve of his life. He has some years back established a school in the Parish Chapel, to the masters of which he bequeathed in-perpetuity the interest of 200l. for giving moral and religious instructions gratuitously to fifty of the most indigent and destitute children of the parish, and for giving chatechistical instructions to the youth in general on every Sunday both before and after Divine Service. When prevented by debility from visiting the abodes of distress during the last summer, he invited the poor and distributed in person among them upwards of 200l. In addition to these highly commendable instances of pure and disinterested charity, he bequeathed 40l. to the poor of his parish, 40l. to forward the interests of Catholic education, and 100l. to be applied to various charitable purposes. The inconsiderable residue of his effects he bequeathed to his poorer relatives. TO BE LET From the first of November next, for such term of years as may be agreed upon, THE FLOUR AND CORN MILLS OF LACK, in the best Repair, with a Neat House and Ten Acres of Land, within five miles of Tuam and four of Dunmore. Applications to be made to Edward Birmingham, Esq., Millbrook, Tuam. September 27, 1824. TO BE LET From the 29th Instant, THE NEAT NEW HOUSE at Newtownsmith, with YARD, COACH HOUSE, STABLE, &c. now occupied by Mr. Mathew Kearney. The SHOP and BACK ROOM, at Newtownsmith, lately occupied by Mrs. Eliza Thompson, And a SMALL APARTMENT, the Main-guard. Also, THE GRASS OF MEADOW PARKS, at Rahoon, until the 1st March next. Apply to Mr. ANTHONY PERRIN, Church-yard. September 27, 1824. TO BE LET For such terms as may be agreed upon, from the first November next, and immediate possession given, ABOUT 300 Acres of the LANDS of KILROE, (well sheltered and divided,) in such Divisions as will suit the Tenant or Tenants. Also to be Let, and immediate possession given, the MILLS of KILROE, with from ten to twenty acres of excellent Lands, extensive Stores and in a good Corn Country. Proposals to be received by Mr. James Hanly, Kilroe. No preference will be given but to the best and most solvent Tenant. September 27, 1824. Hi Ellen, Various time frames - some go back to the 1600's others start at 1864 and on ..The covers says it covers 1530 to 1906, however I have not had much luck finding any 1900's ... MaryPat
Mary Pat, Can you tell me what is the time from for the lookups? Thanks. Ellen

QUARANTINE In the worst hour of the worst season of the worst year of a whole people a man set out from the workhouse with his wife. He was walking -- they were both walking -- north . She was sick with famine fever and could not keep up. He lifted her and put her on his back. He walked like that west and west and north. Until at nightfall under freezing stars they arrived. In the morning they were both found dead. Of cold. Of hunger. Of the toxins of a whole history. But her feet were held against his breastbone. The last heat of his flesh was his last gift to her. Let no love poem ever come to this threshold. There is no place here for the inexact praise of the easy graces and sensuality of the body. There is only time for this merciless inventory: Their death together in the winter of 1847. Also what they suffered. How they lived. And what there is between a man and woman. And in which darkness it can best be proved. -- Ms. Eavan Boland (born Dublin 1944)
