    3. BALLINA CHRONICLE Ballina, Mayo, Ireland Wednesday, April 17, 1850 MISCELLANEOUS The Workhouse of Limerick contains no fewer than 7,500 paupers. John Barton and John Barlow, Esqrs., are elected Governor and Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ireland. Father Thadeus O'Malley has offered himself as a mediator between the Irish Alliance and the Repeal Association. The Marquis of Ormonde has given his large school-house at Kilcesh, diocese of Cashel, which cost him £500 to the National Education Board. Saturday and Sunday last a fleet of thirty-three foreign bread stuff vessels and eight more sail with foreign sugars arrived at the Cove of Cork. The Waterford Town Council have agreed to apply £500 towards baths and wash-houses for the labouring classes there. Mr. Robert Shearman, of Kilkenny, a reduced gentleman, dropped dead near that city on last Monday. Circulars are again issued calling upon the pensioners to register their names for services as Guards for convict ships to Australia. Florence Donohue, a pensioner, and porter to Mr. Herbert, M.P., at Muckross, Killarney, dropped dead on Sunday last. The Roscommon Workhouse is refused relief by the Poor Law Commissioners, with 2,500 paupers starving. Islandmore in Lough Dherg, determinedly resists every attempt to pay poor-rate in Nenagh union, not having sent a pauper to the workhouse. Private H. Harris, 43d, died on Thursday at Carlow, of the effects of intoxication while on the march. There has, since New Year's day, been an accession of forty-six ships, and increase of nearly 13,000 tons to the port of Shields. Major Anderson, Sir John McDonald and Sir Archibald Galloway, who attended the recent complimentary banquets to Lord Gough, died each in successively a day or two after the occasions. The range of stables adjoining the Hibernian hotel, Killarney, was burnt down on Monday morning, and five horses of Mr. Killiher, the landlord, perished in the flames. James Walsh, waiter at the Kenmare arms hotel, was crushed to death under a wall on Saturday. Cathy Joynt Labath Ireland Old News http://www.IrelandOldNews.com/

    1. DORGAN-FLYNN and HARTNETT-DUHIG: EAST CORK
    2. BILL DORGAN
    3. > Listers: > Looking for any information regarding these two families: DORGAN- > FLYNN and HARTNETT-DUHIG of East Cork. > I have an extended database about the descendants of these two > families: Please visit: www.billdorgan.com. > > > PATRICK DORGAN (Born about 1830, Ballybraher, Cloyne Parish, East > Cork and died before 1886) and ANN FLYNN (Born about 1830, > Ballyandreen, Cloyne Parish, East Cork and died before 1886). Griffith's Valuation of County Cork in 1851-1853 (LDS film #0830537) lists a Patrick DARGAN (a variant spelling of DORGAN). This Patrick DARGAN is the brother of John DORGAN and the father of Patrick J. DORGAN. Patrick DARGAN had a house, offices, and land in Carrigkilter: 14 acres, 5 perches, 3 roods 21 perches and 10 acres, 3 roods and 25 perches. He is also listed in the Valuation of Tenements 1855 in Carrigkilter as Patrick DARGAN. Maurice Cusack leased the land in Carrigkilter before 1855 and Patrick DARGAN later leased the same land about 1855. The landlord's name was Thomas Garde Durdin, a descendant of William Penn who founded Pennsylvania. Thomas Garde Durdin would arrive in East Cork from England each year to collect the rents. While in Cork he stayed at one of his estates: Shanagarry "Castle" or Sunville House. In the 1855 Landlord Index of “County Cork Encumbered Estates” (Volume 4, FHL Film No. 25883), Thomas Garde Durdin, Esq. sold his land holdings at auction on 19 June 1855. At the time he held the “Lands of Killderrig, Carrigkilter, Coalvodig otherwise Sunviille, Ballybraher West, Snugborough, Ballyronahan, Ballybraher East, Ballinamona, and part of Shanagarry - 19 June 1855 - (lot maps).” This is the date that Patrick Dargan “bought” his farm ... a farm that he had formerly “leased” from Thomas Garde Durdin. This is the first recorded Dorgan “deed of sale” since the English Reformation of the late 1500s. I have sent for a copy of this deed fom the Dublin Archives. Patrick DARGAN'S yearly rent was 17 English Pounds for the land and 1 Pound, 5 Shillings for the buildings. If he improved the land, the rent would increase each year. Thomas Garde Durdin died in 1867. In the 1880s, the Land Reform Acts went into effect sponsored by Michael Davitt of the Irish Parliament and later by Charles Stewart Parnell a member of the House of Commons of the English Parliament. The Land Acts sought reform in three areas called the three F's: Freedom of Rent, Freedom of Tenure and Freedom from Eviction without trial. Amazingly, the Protestant landowners peacefully went back to England in the 1880s and 1890s never to return to their estates. The tenant farmers continued to pay their rents to the State in the 1880s and 1890s. After the 1920s the State made these tenant farmers the actual "owners" of the lands they once leased! Patrick DARGAN died before his son, Patrick J. DORGAN, married Mary HARTNETT on November 26, 1886. He is documented as "deceased" on their marriage certificat > > JOHN HARTNETT (Born about 1830, Garryvoe, Cloyne Parish, East > Cork) and MARY DUHIG (Born about 1830, Ballymacoda, Cloyne Parish, > East Cork). Here is what I know about John Hartnett: According to Griffith's Valuation of 1851-1853, there were many HARTNETTs listed in the Parishes surrounding Ballycotton, but there is only one listed in Garryvoe: JOHN HARTNETT, Garryvoe location, Garryvoe Lower. He is the father of Mary Hartnett, the wife of Patrick J. Dorgan. He owned 19 acres, 26 perches and 1 acre, 2 roods, 30 perches. There are other HARTNETTs: Denis, James, and Patrick. One of these HARTNETTs, perhaps Denis, was the grandfather of Mary Hartnett and the other two were her father's brothers, her uncles. Denis HARTNETT belonged to the parish of Kilmahon in Ballybraher. He had 20 acres, 7 perches and 2 acres, 3 roods, 36 perches. James HARTNETT belonged to the parish of Kilmahon in Ballylongane. He had 24 acres, 3 roods, 9 perches and 2 acres, 1 rood, 11 perches. Patrick HARTNETT belonged to the parish of Kilmahon in Monagurra. He had Herd's house and 15 acres, 4 perches and 42 acres, 17 perches. Monagurra and Ballybraher are adjoining townlands while Ballylongane is between Shanagarry and Garryvoe. The 1766 census of Cloyne has one "HARNETT". His religion is noted as "Papist". There are no HARTNETTs listed in Ballybraher or Carrigkilter. There is a John Hartnett listed in Ballycotton and several Hartnett's in or around Ballyandreen. John Hartnett is listed as the father of Mary Catherine Hartnett on her death certificate. The HARTNETTs are most likely buried in the Mogeely Cemetery. > > I don't have any information concerning ANN FLYNN and MARY DUHIG. > > This is what I know about ANN FLYNN: > > Johanna Flynn appears in the records as Ann, Johanna and Nancy > Flynn (Flinn and Fling)! 1. Re: Tithe Applotement film numbers

    3. The film numbers for the Tithe Applotments are arranged by civil parish. All of the civil parishes of Ireland are in alpha order. Northern Ireland's are in their own group, however. So if you know the civil parish, go to the LDS Family Library website (familysearch.org), click on the library catalog, and then on 'Place" and put the civil parish in the search box. When you get a list of topics, you will find the tithes under 'Land and Property'. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

    1. "Freehold" (The Lonely Heart) -- Belfast's John HEWITT (1907-1987)

    3. From FREEHOLD (The Lonely Heart) Once in a seaside town with time to kill, the windless winter-daylight ebbing chill, the cafes shut till June, the shop blinds drawn, only one pub yet open where a man trundled his barrels off a dray with care, and two men talking, small across the square, I turned from broad street, down a red-brick row, past prams in parlours and infrequent show of thrusting bulbtips, till high steps and porch and rigid statue signalised a church. I climbed the granite past Saint Patrick's knees, saw cross in stone, befingered, ringed with grease, and water in a stroup with oily skin, swung door on stall of booklets and went in to the dim stained-glass cold interior between low pews along a marble floor to where the candles burned, still keeping pace with ugly-coloured Stations of the Cross. Two children tiptoed in and prayed awhile. A shabby woman in a faded shawl came hirpling past me then, and crumpled down, crossing herself and mumbling monotone. I stood and gazed across the altar rail at the tall windows, cold and winter pale; Christ and His Mother, Christ and Lazarus, Christ watching Martha bustle round the house, Christ crowned, with sceptre and a blessing hand. I counted seven candles on the stand; a box of matches of familiar brand lay on a tray. It somehow seemed my right to pay my penny and set up my light, not to this coloured Christ nor to His Mother, but single flame to sway with all the other small earnest flames against the crowding gloom which seemed that year descending on our time, suppressed the fancy, smiled a cynic thought, turned clicking heel on marble and went out. Not this my fathers' faith: Their walls are bare; their comfort's all within, if anywhere, I had gone there a vacant hour to pass, to see the sculpture and admire the glass, but left as I had come, a protestant, and all unconscious of my yawning want; too much intent on what to criticise to give my heart the room to realise that which endures the tides of time so long cannot be always absolutely wrong; not even with a friendly thought or human for the two children and the praying woman. The years since then have proved I should have stayed and mercy might have touched me till I prayed. For now I scorn no man's or child's belief in any symbol that may succour grief if we remember whence life first arose and how within us yet that river flows; and how the fabled shapes in dream's deep sea still evidence our continuity with being's seamless garment, web and thread. O windblown grass upon the mounded dead, O seed in crevice of the frost-split rock, the power that fixed your root shall take us back, though endlessly through aeons we are thrust as luminous or unreflecting dust. -- John Hewitt (1907-1987). Born in Belfast, 1907, John Hewitt was educated at Methodist College and Queen's University Belfast. He worked for 27 years in Belfast Museum and Art Gallery. Passed over for post of director in 1953, apparently because of his left-wing, anti-sectarian politics, Hewitt moved to Coventry as director of the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, 1957. He retired in 1972 and returned to Belfast (Co. Antrim) dying in 1987. "I may appear Planter's Gothic, " he wrote in 1953, "but there is a round tower somewhere inside, and needled through every sentence I utter." He identified with the radicalism of the Presbyterian United Irishmen and of the 18th and 19th century Rhyming Weavers of Antrim and Down, whose work he anthologised. Hewitt struggled to keep viable a submerged Ulster tradition of tolerance and faith in human progress.
