    3. THE TOY HORSE Somebody, when I was young, stole my toy horse, The charm of my morning romps, my man's delight. For two days I grieved, holding my sorrow like flowers Between the bars of my sullen angry mind. Next day I went out with evil in my heart, Evil between my eyes and at the tips of my hands, Looking for my enemy at the armed stations, Until I found him, playing in his garden With my toy horse, urgent in the battle Against the enemies of his Unreason's land: He was so happy, I gave him also My vivid coloured crayons and my big glass marble. -- Valentin IREMONGER

    3. BALLINA CHRONICLE Ballina, Mayo, Ireland Wednesday, May 8, 1850 MISCELLANEOUS There were 200 cork life savers on board the lost "Adelaide" steam ship. Mr. James Wall is appointed Practical agriculturist Inspector to Tuam and Castlebar Unions. Captain Gavin has allowed his tenantry at Cloncannon, near Moneygall, 30 per cent on last year's rent, together with the whole of the poor and labour rates. The Western World sailed from Liverpool on Friday for New York, with 700 emigrants; comprised principally of Irish families. Lord Gough is to visit his relatives and friends in Derry this month, where a splendid reception awaits the noble and gallant peer. Sub-Constable Edmond Blake from Kenmare, shot himself at Tralee on Saturday night after being reported for intoxication. Captain Wynne has commenced actions for libel against the Marquis of Westmeath and the Guardians of Carrick-on-Suir. In Boyle Union there are nine relieving officers paid 355l. a year for distributing 1l. 14s. 1d. weekly in out-door relief. There are 17 turnkeys in Clonmel gaol, which is about double the number in Limerick county gaol, and with a more numerous charge. Monday night three thatched houses, at Knockalibade, Killarney, the property of James W. Agar, Esq., were maliciously set on fire and reduced to ashes. We regret to learn that there were three cases of cholera in the neighbourhood of Castlecomer on Sunday and Monday last, of these three resulted in death. Mr. DeLacy Nash was last week refused a conditional order for libel against the Times, in connection with an article about his part in the Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow railway. Mr. Dunne, of Tully, the occupier of several extensive farms in the Queen's county and Kildare, with his family, sailed by the Forest Queen, from Liverpool on Saturday last, for the United States. The guardians of Dungarvan Union, Lord Stuart de Decles in the chair, have agreed to defray the expenses of sending out to Quebec, the first week in June next, three hundred girls. Lord Mountcashel's estate in the County Antrim, which yields a well-paid rental of 11,600 a year, is to be sold for payment of 275,000l. incumbrances on his landed property in the south. The Commercial Bank of London is a large creditor. At the City Police Court, Limerick, the presiding magistrate announced that all improper females arrested for use of obscene language in the streets would, in addition to imprisonment, be deprived of their ornamental head gear. On Sunday, as a respectable farmer, M. M'Ganey, was proceeding to the Presbyterian church, at Ballymena, and had stepped to the side of the road, he was attacked by a cow, which forced one of her horns into the right side abdomen, and gored him to death. For the convicts on board the "Neptune" with John Mitchell 100l. was subscribed at Capetown before the vessel sailed for Van Dieman's Land. - The 8th March was fixed for the "General Public Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the deliverance of the colony from the dreadful calamity." BALLINA CHRONICLE Ballina, Mayo, Ireland Wednesday, May 1, 1850 BIANCONI'S CAR The car which Mr. Bianconi placed on the road between Ballina and Mullingar, and which is now principally supported by passengers from this town, has lately become a bye-car to that a short time since put on the road between Castlebar and Swinford, the Castlebar car running the entire way to Mullingar, while the passengers from here are obliged to undergo the inconveniences of a change at Swinford. - We cannot think of dictating to Mr. Bianconi, who is the best judge of his own affairs, but it appears strange to us that this gentleman, who has effected such an improvement in travelling in Ireland, and has at all times shown so great a disposition to meet the wishes of the people when his cars are running, should make the alteration of which we complain without any appearance of reason. The car was first started from this town to Loughrea and Mullingar, and the proprietor found it advantageous to continue it. A year or two afterwards he placed a car between Swinford and Castlebar to meet the car from this town, but now a change is made and the car from Ballina has become a mere auxiliary to the other. Travellers from here claim the continuance of the same car all the [sentence blotted by ink]...We are confident that it is only necessary to direct Mr. Bianconi's attention to this subject to secure an equitable arrangement. Orme, Mr. Wills, Mr. Beaty, and Mr. Gallagher, was appointed at the meeting of the Guardians of this Union on Saturday to take into consideration the reduction of the salary of the Workhouse and Fever Hospital staff. Some members of the committee met on Monday, but a sufficient number not being present, they adjourned to a future day. This committee has an important duty to perform, but we are confident that it will be faithfully and efficiently fulfilled, a due regard being had to economizing the funds of the union, and at the same time to the amount of business to be gone through by each officer, remembering that too great a clipping off frequently proves the opposite of economy. 3. Listen to the Cleric's bell; Lift your wings and soar upwards; Give thanks to God for its coming And be grateful for having heard it. Fitting it is that ye be ruled by it; It is the bell that shall liberate you from pain, Shall bring you away from the rocks and stones And from the furious currents. I say to you, therefore, Make ye a profession of proper faith, Ye comely Children of Lir Listen to the bell of the Cleric!

    1. The Lowly Crickets -- A "Comforting Lullaby" for Jimmy FLYNN
    2. Jean R.
    3. SNIPPET: Much has been written about the disappearance of the corncrake from the fields and meadows of Ireland, but the humble cricket, once a resident of almost every rural hearth, has all but vanished from Irish country life, unnoticed and unsung. Accidentally introduced into Ireland from the semi-tropical Mediterranean in the 17th century, they found comfort in the Emerald Isle only around the warm hearth and chimney corners. Hot sunny days enticed them out to the ditches and hedgerows, but they returned to the fireplace at harvest time with the onset of colder weather. Crickets evoked only two emotions in country homes long ago, a great affection or intense dislike, and both of these sentiments were firmly rooted in Irish country folklore which held that they brought either good or bad luck depending on which you believed. One woman was to recall that her husband would bang the tongs on the hob three times and say, "If you came for good luck, stay, but if ye came for ba! d luck, go." Rarely seen in the daytime, it was when night fell that they came to life, moving out from their secret hiding places by the fire to forage. Their musical chirping, produced by the male in an effort to attract a mate, could be heard in almost every country house in Ireland until the rapid modernization of housing that took placed in the early 1960s. The replacement of flagstone floors with concrete, sod-lined thatched roofs with slate and lime walls with cement left no comfort or place for the little creatures to hide. Long ago people believed that their departure foretold a death. Elderly Jimmy FLYNN of Laughty Barr, near Kiltyclogher, has been a gentle guardian and protector of a thriving brood of crickets. Living alone in a house where the warm hearth fire was the focus and heart of his cozy kitchen, he remarked, "They sit up on me shoulder there and sing to me at night. They never did a hate wrong to me, they make lovely music in the summer, all night long, like a French fiddle. Sometimes that's a sign of rain coming. If you bother them though the least they'll do is cut holes in yer socks, but if you lave them alone they'll lave you alone." It's almost too late now to save the humble cricket - that's even if anyone wanted to. There are no nature preserves left aside for them, their fate is sealed. Still, their passing will be mourned by some who fondly remember them, just as is yellow home-made butter, sweet country buttermilk or the lovelorn "kraak-kraak" call of the corncrake seeking a mate in the honeysweet, morning meadowfields of long ago. Excerpt, "Leitrim Guardian" yearly magazine (1998)w/photo of Mr. FLYNN.

    3. I have heard that often when Irish families came to the US they tried hard NOT to be identifiably Irish. Often they used a different name, maybe their middle name, rather than use one that was definitely Irish. Bridget was one of those names. So it is possible that her family called her by her middle name. Just a thought. 1. Waterford -- The PENROSE family - (CROMWELL)
    2. Jean R.
    3. SNIPPET: Waterford, the site of the Irish rebellion, has a colourful maritime history. The early Viking invaders gave the town its original name, Vradaford, recalling its network of watery inlets, reminiscent of their own homeland in Scandinavia. By the 1400s, Waterford's maritime trade had become so extensive that the town was nicknamed Rich Waterford. The River Suir widens to more than a mile as it flows 10 miles from the city centre out to the Atlantic, and the fame of its boatyards spread far. In the early 1500s, HENRY VIII, one of the strongest of the English Monarchs, commissioned the boatyards of Waterford to build two ships for the Royal household. Legend has it that, a century later at Waterford, Oliver CROMWELL coined the phrase, "by hook or by crook." Hook Head lies on one side of the estuary, a crook-shaped promontory at Brownstone Head. Just before landing his troops, Cromwell allegedly vowed: "By the Hook or by the Crook we will be victorious by tonight." He m! eant no matter on which side they went ashore or how they carried out their attack, a rapid conquest was assured. Waterford's appearance has changed little over the past 150 years. The lively quays beside the Suir in Waterford remain the very heart of this attractive town. One much-loved feature, Reginald's Tower, has survived 1,000 years, having been built by the Vikings in the year 1003. The old tower saw the Normans invade in the 11th century, followed by the English armies in the 16th century, and later witnessed the departure of countless emigrants during the Famine years. During the Famine, Waterford was the home port for nearly 250 ships. A great number were named after owners' or captains' wives, mothers, daughters and sisters, such as "Juliet," "Louisa," "Catherine," "Margaret," "Ann Henry," "Ann Carr," "Ann Kenny," "Victoria,", "Eliza," "Ellen," "Lavinia" and "Sophia," -- all vessels of the 40-strong fleet which sailed with the Famine emigrants from Waterford to America. "Day after day our quays are crowded with people seeking for American ships, and no sooner is a ship's departure for that prosperous land announced than she is filled," reported the "Chronicle" as the Fame took hold. In one week in the spring of 1846 ten ships sailed with passengers for Canada. The rate slowed down during the following year, with around three ships leaving every week through the summer months. But the pace of departures picked up in 1848 as the potato-failure and the reality of the doomed insurrection were recognized. The busiest of the famine ships operating from Waterford that year was the "Harmony," which took passengers to New York sometimes, though more often to New Orleans and Boston. After one spring voyage, she tied up at Boston on May 27, 1848. On that day in the space of two tides there arrived at Boston three emigrant ships from Liverpool, plus the "Gulane" from Limerick; the "General Scott" from Cork; the "Princess" from Donegal and the "Lord Fitzroy" from Galway. The armada from Ireland was in full flow. Waterford's famous, hand-made Waterford crystal, admired all over the world was first produced in 1783 when George and William PENROSE opened their glass factory. Recognising the profits to be made in shipbuilding, the Penrose family opened a shipyard, too. The shipping movements are now few, but the hotels, busy shops and converted warehouses, look out on the ancient cobble-stones and weather-beaten bollards, the view across the wide river unbroken by any buildings. Reginald's Tower, the walls as robust as ever, has been converted to a small museum, an ancient witness to so much history and bloodshed, heartache and grief. -- Excerpts, "The Famine Ships," Edward Laxton (1996)

Red, yellow, blue, racing silks of every hue, rippled in the sunlight across the flickering screen. Around the room lay tarnished trophies. Walls, a mosaic of photographs of mares and foals. Room corners holding drifts of magazines and books, listing bloodlines. Stating what sires were standing where, and for how much. 3. I don't have an image handy, but you could use the text "Clan MacMillan Y-DNA Surname Project". I've been rather didactic at using that text string, as there are some other FTDNA Projects for MacMillans w/ other names, and I want to be sure folks know the correct name for the Project I put forth. Thanks for the exposure! Adhaniá Olson Join the Clan MacMillan Y-DNA Surname Project at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/MacMillan/ For all variations of the name, plus septs. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ray Moore" <dennyswrexx2@fastmail.fm> To: <IRELAND-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 24, 2006 3:16 Subject: Re: [IRELAND] MOORE DNA > hi ok i'll put a link on my pages. i already had a 12 marker DNA at > familytree. also Steve a 25 marker. will let you know when tthe link > done. what should the image i put there be called?. or the link page > name.
