    3. Thanks again Kath, from what my great aunt told me he was one of 18 children,. I know that our Joseph was in England in 1897 when he married my GGrandmother, he died there in 1927 and as far as we know never returned to Ireland, they are in the British Census of 1901 and I think I located him in the 1891 Census in England prior to his marraige. His son was named Thomas, not that is definitive. I have his school record from the parish of Bansha and I think I may hve found his grandfather in Kilshane on the Griffin Valuation register. 3. Hello, I am new to this list and am in need of some advise. I am searching for my GGrandfather Joseph Sinclair B Aug 1864 in County Tipperary. I know that he moved to England and married my GGrandmother but it is life in Ireland that is a mystery. Family says that he was one of 18 children, protestant and born in County Tipperary. I have a church name of Kilshane , where there are supposed to me family members buried and a parish school name of Bansha, but that is all that I know,.Can anyone send me in the right direction as to how I might go about finding his birth as I do not know his parents names. I understand that Civil Registration in Ireland began in Jan 1864 so that must be a plus for my search. I have located films on the LDS site but as there are so many for 1864 I am unsure which ones to order as they are numbered 1 through to 20's.Any help would be greatly appreciated. Dianne Australia

    1. [IRELAND] Katharine TYNAN (1861-1931) Dublin/London - "The Only Child"
    2. Jean R.
    3. THE ONLY CHILD Lest he miss other children, lo! His angel is his playfellow. A riotous angel two years old, With wings of rose and curls of gold. There on the nursery floor together They play when it is rainy weather, Building brick castles with much pain, Only to knock them down again. Two golden heads together look An hour long o'er a picture-book, Or, tired of being good and still, They play at horses with good will. And when the boy laughs you shall hear Another laughter silver-clear, Sweeter than music of the skies, Or harps, or birds of Paradise. Two golden heads one pillow press, Two rosebuds shut for heaviness. The wings of one are round the other Lest chill befall his tender brother. All day, with forethought mild and grave, The little angel's quick to save. And still outruns with tender haste The adventurous feet that go too fast. >From draughts, from fire, from cold and stings Wraps him within his gauzy wings And knows his father's pride, and shares His happy mother's tears and prayers. -- Katharine TYNAN was born in Dublin in 1861 and lived in both Ireland and London. She married Henry Albert HINKSON, a lawyer and novelist. Katharine authored more than 100 novels, several books of poety and a five-volume autobiography.

    3. Scorn Not His Simplicity (Phil Coulter) See the child With the golden hair Yet eyes that show the emptiness inside Do we know Can we understand just how he feels Or have we really tried See him now As he stands alone And watches children play a children's game Simple child He looks almost like the others Yet they know he's not the same Scorn not his simplicity But rather try to love him all the more Scorn not his simplicity Oh no Oh no See him stare Not recognizing the kind face That only yesterday he loved The loving face Of a mother who can't understand what she's been guilty of How she cried, tears of happiness the day the doctor told her it's a boy Now she cries tears of helplessness and thinks of all the things he can't enjoy Scorn not his simplicity But rather try to love him all the more Scorn not his simplicity Oh no Oh no Only he knows how to face the future hopefully Surrounded by despair He won't ask for your pity or your sympathy But surely you should care Scorn not his simplicity But rather try to love him all the more Scorn not his simplicity Oh no Oh no Oh no

    1. [IRELAND] RESOURCE: National School Records/National Archives ofIreland (Dublin) website
    2. Jean R.
    3. RESOURCE: National Archives Ireland www.nationalarchives.ie Check out what the National Archives of Ireland website has to offer for researchers who visit their facility in Dublin. Resources include various National School Roll Books/Registers received via the Department of Education for Cos. Cavan, Cork, Donegal, Dublin, Galway, Kerry, Kilkenny, Laois, Leitrim, Longford, Mayo, Meath, Monaghan, Offaly, Roscommon,Tipperary, Waterford, Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow. School records received via private donation include Cos. Cavan, Carlow, Cork, Donegal, Dublin, Galway, Kerry, Kildare, Laois, Leitrim, Longford, Mayo, Meath, Monaghan, Offaly, Roscommon, Sligo, Tipperary, Waterford, Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow. I found that the easiest way for me to locate their school records page at the website was to simply do a "Google" website search for keywords National School Records. (I had problems locating it using their website index, but you may not.) While I don't believe the personnel at the Archives do research for the general public, they do take queries, have tips on using their facility and apparently have a list of genealogists who do research on some materials for a fee. There is also genealogical material you can access free from their website.

    1. [IRELAND] RESOURCE: Do you know where your ancestors lived? - ValuationOffice Records
    2. Jean R.
    3. RESOURCE: The Valuation Office in Dublin can be an excellent resource for those fortunate researchers who know where their ancestors actually lived in Ireland. Research can be carried out for rural areas if, at a minimum, you know the name of the county, the name of the townland and the name of the person or family. Research for cities and towns require the name of the street, in addition. The Valuation Office set up to carry out the original Primary Valuation, is still in existence at the Irish Life Centre, Abbey St. Lower, Dublin 1 (prev. at Ely Place) and has two related sets of records which are potentially quite valuable. The first of these are the notebooks used by the original Valuation surveyors, consisting of "field books," "house book" and "tenure books." All three record a map reference for the holdings they deal with, as in the published Valuation. The fields books then record information on the size and quality of the holding, the house books record the occupiers' names and the measurement of any buildings on their holdings, and the tenure books give the annual rent paid and the legal basis on which the holding is occupied, whether by lease or at will. The tenure books also give the YEAR OF ANY LEASE, useful to know before searching estate papers or the Registry of Deeds. As well as containing information such as this, which does not appear in the published Valuation, the valuers' notebooks can also be useful in documenting any changes in occupation between the initial survey and the published results, for instance, if a family emigrated in the years immediately before publication, since they pre-date the final publication itself by several years. Unfortunately they are not extant for all areas. The National Archives now houses those which survive for the Republic of Ireland. Those covering Northern Ireland are now to be found in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland. The Valuation Office in Dublin contains the second set of useful records. These are the "Cancelled Land Books" and "Current Land Books," giving details of all changes in the holdings, from the time of the primary valuation up to the present day. Any variations in the size or status of the holding, the names of the occupier or lessor, or the valuation itself, are given in the revisions carried out every few years. The Books can be very useful in helping to clarify a possible time of death, date of emigration or identifying a living relative. Per Irish genealogy expert and author, John GRENHAM, a large majority of those who were in occupation of a holding by the 1890s, when the Land Acts begin to subsidize the purchase of the land by its tenant-farmers, HAVE DESCENDANTS OR RELATIVES STILL LIVING IN THE SAME AREA. The Cancelled Land Books for Northern Ireland are now in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland. As I understand it, you can conduct your own research or have the Valuation Office do it. There is a fee involved. Check their website for details (updates or changes) at http://www.valoff.ie/Genealogy.htm

    1. [IRELAND] Shelbourne Hotel - Dublin city renovated historic building built in 1824
    2. Jean R.
    3. SNIPPET: Dublin city's Shelbourne Hotel reopened earlier this year, following major renovations. Centrally located on St. Stephen's Green, built in 1823, this historic building is a landmark in Dublin city, and has been part of Dublin's social life for 183 years and an intrinsic part of Dublin's literary, social, culinary and artistic tradition for many years . It is now one of Dublin's largest five-star luxury hotels. FYI -- Per the Nov-Dec 2007 issue of Dublin's "Ireland of the Welcomes" magazine, many travellers come to Ireland in search of their family history but often leave disappointed, as they fail to get the necessary professional advice on how to embark on the Irish genealogical paper trial. The hotel has recently come up with an unique genealogy service for its guests. Helen KELLY, one of Ireland's leading genealogists, is available for consultation. Once guests have confirmed their reservation at the Shelbourne, they can book the Genealogy Butler service online. They will then be sent an online assessment form to complete prior to their arrival in Dublin, which will assist the Genealogy Butler in beginning vital research on their behalf. The Shelbourne Hotel is ideally located close to the major genealogical repositories. For further info: www.theshelbourne.ie

    3. You are most welcome. I did a search also of British isles vital records index cds and turns up two other males born to same couple. (Sinclair/Turner) No given name when the male's births were registered. (according to the index of births on the CD) (a bit strange) really when you think of that fact. Three males, with no given names at birth regristration. Male Sinclair born Aug 1864 Male Sinclair born 24th Jan 1870 third male Sinclair born 22 Nov 1973 If you find the one born Aug 1864 is Joseph, it would be worth following up the 1901 and 1911 census of the parish.
