    1. Continuing IRC problem

    3. I am extremely new at using IRC, but I did manage to install and successfully connect last Saturday, and I was proud of myself for having done that on the first try. My happiness was short-lived, however, because on Sunday I suddenly could not connect to irc.rootsweb.com server any more despite the fact I could (and still can!) connect to anyone else. I have been going around and around with the RW Help Desk, who last I heard from them would only tell me that there is no block on me, but nothing else. They now will not respond to me when I ask for a response or help, so I don't know where to go. There are at least three others having similar troubles that I know of, all trying to connect to the same RW server, so it is not just me, my service provider, or computer, because the only "common denominator" is the same RootsWeb server we all try to connect to. I have a friend who has been very helpful to me through all of this, she is the one to suggest IRC to me in the first place, but even she is running out of ideas and suggestions. I am now asking her in desperation. I sat down last night with every intention of removing IRC and forgetting the whole notion of it, despite the fact I think I can benefit from it and make a contribution myself. However, my whole intention as an active List/Board Admin for RootsWeb was to use their server, but that is impossible when that same server is the only one that I cannot access for some reason, and I only keep "timing out" every time I try to do so. Starting last Sunday, I can still log onto any other server but that one. If anyone out there has any suggestions at this point, I welcome hearing from you. David David E. 3. Just because the problem isn't fixed instantaneously doesn't mean it isn't being looked at.... I asked you a question somewhere in all this about your connection: are you using Verizon DSL or cable? Never saw an answer to that one... Tech says to try this: (applies to anyone who can't get in, please) Get to a shell prompt (meaning MS-DOS window for the pre-XP win users; CMD (I'm told) for XP or a terminal window in a Mac) Type telnet irc.rootsweb.com 6667 Also, comparing a traceroute to irc.rootsweb.com to a traceroute to www.rootsweb.com Let us know what you see. --pig On 9/1/05 12:26, "David E. I hope they will not give up, either. There may be others trying to connect also -- your efforts will help them all. > I am now asking her in desperation. I hope you have read pig's response and done the traceroutes. It would be great if all of those having difficulties would do the same thing. This is the technical data needed, and it is NOT difficult to do. I urge you to follow the steps given by pig and submit those traceroutes to the Helpdesk. They can't keep responding when there is nothing new to say. Valorie
