Her father (my great grandfather) died some time in the 1950s or 1960s, I believe, and apparently he had some German and Arab background but I think nobody knows this for sure. His name was Alexander/Iskandar. I know there are some family of mine in the USA who are related to the Behyat family. If anybody knows anything about my great grandfather, Alexander/Iskandar Behyat, please reply. I did a DNA test on here and there were some "new" ethnicities I didn't know I had, such as from the Iberian Peninsula, Italy/Greece, Asia South and there was Europe West but only 1%. So it is very possible that he could have had some European background. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I know this was posted over 10 years ago but we are related. I am sure of this 100%. I'm sorry, I do not know the answer but maybe I can find out. My father is from Iran (born 1952) and his surname was sadreorafai but his father (my grandfather) changed it when my dad was around 20 years old. I am surprised, I did not know that it had been changed before sadreorafai. Oh my god, I hope you see my message and we can talk further. I think he was born Mohammed Sheffi during 1885 in Persia, and at some point between 1901 - 1909 emigrated to Wales where he changed his name to Thomas Mohamed Sheffi and worked as a colliery in the mines. I found his marriage in 1909 which lists his nationality as 'Persia Telerz'. But I cannot find when he emigrated or any other family members for him. If anyone has an idea where to begin, that would be fantastic! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My grandfathers family came from Urmia when it was still Persia. My g-grandfather Babajan settled in Chicago. Do you have any records that show any family in Chicago? As far as the name Babajan goes, i've heard two things. 1: Baba was a family last name that some took as first names. 2. Baba meant "daddy" and jan refers to "dear". During WW1 Assyrians fled from Urmia due to the genocide and religious reprocussions. They went to Russia where they also named a community/town there Urmia. The name you referred to as Sergius...could it have originally been Sargis. The cemetery where my g-grandfather is has grave stones with the Sargis last name. As far as Tay Hattam goes, could they have been doing Missionary work in Urmia? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Rootsweb mailing lists are automatic and are managed by list robots. These robots take care of subscription requests and bouncing (rejected) emails. The most frequently asked question of subscribers is: ***************** "Why have I been unsubscribed?" Answer: If your list mail cannot be delivered for any reason, the list robot unsubscribes you after a certain number of failed attempts. (For the IRAN list the maximum member bounce score is: 3) This can happen for a number of reasons - some of the more common reasons are that your mailbox is full, your spam filter is blocking the list mail, your ISP is blocking list mail from Rootsweb, you have put an automatic responder on your email.... If you were unsubscribed and did not wish to be taken off the mailing list, simply subscribe again. However be forewarned that if whatever caused the list robot to unsubscribe you the first time is still happening, it will simply remove you again after a specific number of bounces--3--(rejected list mail to your email address). But as a courtesy to all IRAN listers, I can re-subscribe you manually. Just let me know. ****************** Other questions asked are: "How do I unsubscribe?" Answer: Simply follow the instructions at the bottom of every list mail message. ****************** "Why is my mail not getting to the mailing list?" Answer: Make sure that you are sending from the same email you are subscribed under. The list robot does not recognize names. It only recognizes email addresses. If your sending email address is not on the subscriber list, your email will be rejected. ****************** "Why am I not getting list mail?" Answer: Check the HelpDesk notices in the yellow box for announcements about any technical problems with Rootsweb mail. http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ If you don't find the answer to your problem on the HelpDesk page you need to check if you are still subscribed to the list. You can get a list of all your subscribed to mailing lists from Password Central: http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ If Password Central doesn't include all lists to which you should be subscribed, re-subscribe to any lists that are missing from your subscribed lists by sending a new e-mail to: LISTNAME-request@rootsweb.com (replacing the word LISTNAME with the actual list name). Put only the word SUBSCRIBE in the subject and message body of your e-mail. ****************** Should anyone need further elaboration then you may give me a contact. --Manaia [List-Admin] IRAN-admin@rootsweb.com My gratitudes to Lorine McGinnis Schulze for sharing.
