My great-grandmother was adopted around 1900 and died in the flu epidemics about 10 years later. The family appears on the census records before and after in Jefferson County and Muscatine county, respectively. We suspect she may have been a Native American orphan. Does anyone have experience locating adoption records (the first step) and then petitioning to open them under Iowa law? Also, is there any movement afoot to alter the law to make it easier to locate and open such records in cases where all parties are long since deceased as in this case?
