Member of Knights of Columbus, Elks, Modern Woodmen and American Legion. Served in the prosecuting attorney's office. Dubuque county, for six years and in the city attorney's office for six years. Married to Margaret Whelan. Has six children, John L. Margaret Elizabeth, M. D., Jr., Terance W., Judith Ann and Sheila Therese. Served as senator from Dubuque county in the forty-fourth and forty-fifth general assemblies and was democratic leader and president pro tempore in the forty-fifth. Was appointed to the Board of Parole during the session of the forty-fifth. A democrat.
