Judy, It is very hard to read but perhaps it says /renter? I read some of the other entries and it seems it might be something he writes on others as well. Good luck, Janet -----Original Message----- From: Jtrippneu@aol.com [mailto:Jtrippneu@aol.com] Sent: Thursday, January 27, 2005 8:10 PM To: IOWA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [IOWA] CENSUS HELP Anyone with census images, can you please assist me in reading the occupation of Alonzo Socy entry 193-188 in Hardin Twp, Hardin Co, IA on the 1870 Census. I believe it says Farmer/???? and since I can't find g-g-g-Uncle Alonzo after 1870, I am wondering if the second part of the occupation entry can give me a clue as to where he might have gone. His actual name is Alonzo Locy, Locey, or Losey and he was between 55 and 58 yrs of age in 1870. The 1880 Census lists only his wife HULDAH Locy and the children and she is not listed as a widow or as head of household, so he may have abandoned the family or died prior to 1880. She subsequently wound up in an asylum and I am still trying to locate where her children were located in 1880. Thank you for your assistance. I have the census image, but just need help deciphering the occupation portion for Alonzo. Judy, I agree that it says farmer/renter. There is another entry on the same page that is easier to read and clearly say the same. Heritage Quest lists the last name as SOEY (although it is clearly Socy on the census image). I don't find any other leads under SOEY In 1900 Hulda C. LOCEY, age 60 is listed as "inmate" at the poor farm in Hardin County. Usually a place for the indigent. She is listed as having had 3 chhildren, all 3 living in 1900. In 1920 Arthur C. LOCEY, age 54, born in PA, father born in PA, Mother born in MA, is listed with his family in Franklin County, IA. Franklin and Hardin Counties are adjacent. That's as close as I come from your information. If you think that Arthur C. is one of the sons, let me know. I'll send you the other information from the image. Remember that in old script writing, an L often looked like an S. The thing that I do is compare a name spelled with S - such as Samuel - on the census with one that I think should be an L on the same page. It helps me decipher the writing sometimes. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sue Thielmann" <sthielmann@machlink.com> To: <IOWA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, January 29, 2005 6:43 AM Subject: Re: [IOWA] CENSUS HELP > Judy, > I agree that it says farmer/renter.
