Lisa, thank you so much for the clue as to how to find the enumerator instructions. It's been so helpful to me already in answering some major family questions about what seemed to be discrepancies in the census from year to year. I've passed a couple of the URL's on to the family name list that I coordinate. The explanation about how to count (or not) Native Americans was very enlightening, as well as other parts of it. What a chore those early enumerators had! I gained a new respect for them realizing all they must have gone through to ferret out all those details in some of the censuses. And no wonder some people hid from the census taker (or loosed the hounds) with all those personal questions. (As far as I can tell, my maternal grandfather's family never ever were included in any census -- his stock answer to most questions was "none of yer dambizness.")
