Hello, Anyone know where I might be able to obtain a list of teachers at the Iowa Institute for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb at Council Bluffs from 1870-1880?? Thank you. Eileen
Eileen, I don't have a complete list but I do have the names of those who signed off on the handwritten records of some of my relatives who attended that school during those years. This was during Benjamon Talbott's tenure as Superintendent. Are you looking for someone in particular? My cousin, Ronald Sutcliffe (Butler County -- who graduated from this school and went on to Gallaudet and to have a career there as well as in business management) recently researched and published a book, "The Legacy of Iowa School for the Deaf." It's likely that he has a list of these teachers. Also, the school itself (and some other schools for the deaf around the country) seem to preserve their historical records longer than schools for the hearing, so you might be able to get such a list direct from ISD. Feel free to write to me personally or on list (or both) if you think I might be of help. I have done quite a bit of research into this subject (schools for the deaf etc.) as many of my family in this country have been deaf at least since the 1750's; i.e., SURBER, HALLER, COFFMAN, DAKE, FANSLER/FENSLER, BIPPUS ... and many others). And of course, my cousin, Ron, has done extensive research in writing his book.
