    3. Eileen, Somewhere a village is being deprived of it's idiot. His response to your query does not deserve the courtesy of a reply. Tell him to go back home. 2. We all have to remember 'context' when researching our past. "Idiot" used to be a medical term, so was "Moron" as was "deaf and dumb". And 120 years ago society WAS from a different planet ! -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Thu, 22 Mar 2007 9:47 AM Subject: Re: [IOWA] Fw: Iowa Institute for Education of Deaf & Dumb Eileen, Somewhere a village is being deprived of it's idiot. 1. [IOWA] Andrew Clemons & ISD Council Bluffs
    2. Jeanne Surber
    3. To Eileen and others interested in this search -- was Andrew Clemons/Clemens son of John Clemens (blacksmith) and wife, Margaret? I'm finding him in the 1870 census in Clayton County, IA, and then again in 1880 in the same county, same parents, and listed as an "artist." He is not listed as "D&D" on the census, but often this designation was omitted, especially if the census taker didn't realize or bother to note that the person had a hearing deficiency. Actually, ISD did not open in Council Bluffs until late December in 1870. Before that the school was in Iowa City in Johnson County. Andrew was probably not still at the school in Pottawattami County at the time the census was taken in 1880. Teachers who signed off on the reports for several of my great aunts & uncles in the years between 1870 -1880 were: Miss Zorbaugh, Miss Israel, Mrs. Turton, and Mr. Hummer. Other teachers for the school are listed in the 1870 census for Johnson County. Do you have Ancestry.com census information? If so, search the name "Benj Talbott" in Johnson County, Iowa, and you will find a long list of names for teachers and students at the Iowa City institution for 1870. They moved later that year. All the students and teachers are lumped under the identification of "Deaf and Dumb Asylum" by the census taker and were enumerated together on several consecutive census pages. I have limited information on the teachers. Mr. Hummer is "John C. Hummer, 1849-1923." I do have a bio on him from my cousin's book. Not sure how much or what kind of info you are looking for about the teachers. If the above isn't useful to you, let me know more specifics and maybe I can find more for you or tell you where to look. The book I mentioned has an extensive bibliography and I can look through it if you give me something more specific to look for. Jeanne Surber
