Curator of the Historical, Memorial and Art Department of Iowa Volume IV THE AMERICAN HISTORICAL SOCIETY, Inc. Chicago and New York 1931 JEREMIAH SHADE was an Iowa pioneer, and had a notable career as a banker and business man. His career as a banker has been continued through his son, Charles Grant Shade, who for over forty-two years has been connected with the Savings Bank of Lockwood and the First National Bank of Rock Rapids, of which he is president. Jeremiah Shade was born near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, September 11, 1828, and died September 14, 1901. His father was a German sailor, who early located in Pennsylvania. Jeremiah Shade spent the first twenty-four years of his life in his native state, had a practical education, and was always a hard worker and possessed of a very excellent business judgment. At the age of twenty-four he went west to Bloomington, Illinois, and engaged in farming there for about ten years. At the outset of the Civil war he volunteered, but was rejected on account of disability. However, he was assigned duty as a cooper, making barrels for the Government. Jeremiah Shade came to Iowa in 1862 and settled in Delaware County, on a farm, and in July, 1871, moved to Lyon County. He became one of the largest farm and land owners in that section of the state and was associated with other progressive men in organizing banks and other institutions. He was elected and served eight years as county treasurer. He was one of the group of men who organized the First National Bank of Rock Rapids, and became president of the institution on May 17, 1880. The other original directors of the bank were T. K. Bradley, B. L. Richards, B. B. Richards and F. A. Keep. Jeremiah Shade was associated with B. L. Richards in the purchase of 8,000 acres of land, and the management of this land, together with the bank, occupied his energies fully until he retired in 1895. Mr. Shade was a Republican in politics, was a charter member of Border Lodge No. 406, A. F. and A. M., of Rock Rapids, and a member of the Methodist Church. He married at Bloomington, Illinois, in 1849, Miss Isabel M. Martin, who was of Scotch-Irish parentage. They reared a family of ten children: Hanna R., born April 30, 1851; Robert A., born February 17, 1853; Jeremiah Elwood, born October 4, 1855; Harriett Alice, born in December, 1857; Mary Louise, born July 16, 1859; Seymour Eugene, born December 10, 1861; Emma May, born September 15, 1863; Charles Grant, born March 29, 1865; Ostor Burr, born February 18, 1867, and Harry Well, born July 16, 1873. Charles Grant Shade, eighth in age, in this large family of children, was born March 29, 1865, and has spent practically all his life in Rock Rapids. He attended public schools there, for several years worked at the trade of printer, and at the age of nineteen graduated from Upper Iona University at Fayette, Iowa. On November 11, 1886, he began his long career as a banker, and that has been his life work. He has been president of the First National Bank of Rock Rapids since 1902. He organized and was at the head of a syndicate that owned fourteen banks, but in 1909 he withdrew from connection with all but four of these banks. Mr. Shade is independent in politics and is a thirty-second degree Scottish Rite Mason. In 1914 he was honored with the office of president of the Iowa State Bankers Association. He is a past grand treasurer of the Masonic Grand Lodge of Iowa and is affiliated with the Congregational Church. Mr. Shade married in 1887 Miss Minnie B. Bradley, daughter of Edwin and Laura Bradley. Mr. Shade has a winter home in Pasadena, California.
