Schwob To: IOWA@rootsweb.com, IowaGreatWar@yahoogroups.com Message-ID: <bc0.5118dc9d.37088d57@aol.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" A Narrative History of The People of Iowa with SPECIAL TREATMENT OF THEIR CHIEF ENTERPRISES IN EDUCATION, RELIGION, VALOR, INDUSTRY, BUSINESS, ETC. by EDGAR RUBEY HARLAN, LL. B., A. M. Curator of the Historical, Memorial and Art Department of Iowa Volume IV THE AMERICAN HISTORICAL SOCIETY, Inc. Chicago and New York 1931 FRED T. SCHWOB, the present mayor of Wappello, has given a good account of himself as a native of that town, and his work and character have received repeated testimonials from his fellow citizens in the way of public office and other honors. Mr. Schwob was born at Wapello, March 31, 1895. His father, Theodore Schwob, was born in Basle, Switzerland, was reared and educated in that country, and came to America in 1889. He has been a resident of Wapello for forty years, being one of the old timers of that locality. After coming to America he attended school at night, learned the machinist trade, and has for many years carried on a blacksmith shop in Wapello. He married Louise Grauwinkle, of Wapello, and of their three children two are living, Fred T. and Carl Emanuel, the latter a resident of Springfield, Illinois. Fred T. Schwob attended the common schools at Wapello, graduated from the Atalissa High School in 1914 and after school hours and during vacations he worked in his father's machine ship and mastered the machinist's trade under the careful direction of his father. In 1915 he became an employee of the Ruthenberg Clothing Store in Wapello, leaving that position to join the colors in June, 1917. He was sent to Little Rock, Arkansas, later to Demming, New Mexico, then to Lawton, Oklahoma, and from Camp Upton he embarked with the One Hundred Twenty-sixth Field Artillery. He was with his regiment in France until after the armistice, and received his honorable discharge at Camp Dodge, Iowa, with the rank of supply sergeant. After the war Mr. Schwob resumed work in the clothing store until he was elected sheriff of Louisa County, in 1920. He served two terms in that office, four years, and on leaving office in 1925, established the Wapello Clothing Company. He sold out this business in 1927 and has since been associated with his father in the machine shop business and carries on the work of the establishment during the declining years of his father. Mr. Schwob was elected mayor of Wapello in 1928. He is a Republican, a member of the Methodist Church, and belongs to the Masonic, Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias fraternities. He married, May 25, 1918, Miss Nina Kremer, of Wapello. They have a daughter, Arline Louise, born in 1920. Again it seems that there were at least 99 different ways of doing business in our Iowa counties back then. Don lives in a nearby county. We are in north central Iowa - but it looks as if much of the state will be involved in the forecast storm beginning late tonight and all thru Sunday. Already have my "essentials" bought and a movie or two to watch.;-) I'm just glad it's this weekend and not next - hoping for nice weather for the Easter Egg Hunt in the park next Saturday (they're tough to find under snow!) They just said it was used to iron large items. This particular one, slid into a cabinet when not in use. Interesting Jim Avery Dover PA **************Feeling the pinch at the grocery store?
