    3. I wonder if anyone has access to obits or cemetery indexes for Sioux City, Iowa and can do a look up for me? I am searching for the death date of my gr-gr-uncle, TILDEN MAGERS, who was last living in Sioux City, Iowa, in the city directory dated 1947. He was deceased by 1954 when he was named as a deceased brother in the obit of William Magers of Perry, Iowa. I sent for a copy of his death record from the Department of Vital Records in Iowa, but it was returned to me today. It reads: "Your application for a copy of a Vital Record is being returned because (1) the records has to be 75 years old before a niece, nephew or first cousin can get a death or marriage certificate for genealogy information; (2) the record has to be 100 year old before a niece, nephew or first cousin can get a birth certificate for genealogy information; (3) You hold entitlement to the record of the relative that you share a direct blood linage." Yes, I typed it exactly as they did, with the spelling errors. I specifically told them in my letter and on the request form that I did not need a certified copy as this was for genealogy purposes. Any help you can provide me is appreciated. Tilden Magers was never married and died childless and single. I am assuming that he was buried somewhere in Sioux City. He was born August 14, 1876, in Warren County, Illinois. He was last living in Sioux City and working as a "Houseman" at the Martin Hotel. He lived in Sioux City almost 15 years. Thanks.

Chicago and New York 1931 WALTER SCOTT is a banker at Hawarden, but his active associations with that section of Northwestern Iowa have not been confined to running a bank. He has been a leader in business and in civic affairs there for many years. Mr. Scott is a native of Dakota Territory, born in what is now South Dakota, July 22, 1869, son of Adam and Jane (Evans) Scott. His parents came to what is now Sioux County, Iowa, in 1867, when there were more Indians than white people living in that region. His father was of Scotch and English ancestry. Walter Scott attended school in South Dakota, grew up on a farm and ranch, and he has always kept in close touch with the live stock and agricultural interests of Northwestern Iowa and the Dakotas. After reaching the age of twenty-one he engaged in the live stock and meat market business and after 1900 was a dealer in and shipper of live stock, giving most of his attention to that business until 1917, when he engaged in banking, organizing the Farmers State Bank of Hawarden. He has been president of the institution from the beginning. Mr. Scott supervises some valuable farming interests, including about a thousand acres of land, and continues to give much attention to the live stock business. As a citizen of hawarden he was for ten years chief of the fire department, was mayor for six years, for twelve years was president of the school board, and has been generous of his means and his influence in promoting every worthy undertaking. He is a Republican in politics, and belongs to the various Masonic bodies, being past master of Dale Lodge No. 456, A. F. and A. M. and past patron of the O. E. S. He is a member of the Sioux City Consistory and the Abu-Bekr Temple of the Mystic Shrine, also at Sioux City, and the Royal Arch Chapter at Hawarden. He is a Rotarian and a member of the Congregational Church. He married, November 1, 1893, Miss Millie O. Ashmore, of Hawarden, daughter of U. R. and Frances F. (Newton) Ashmore. B., A. M. Curator of the Historical, Memorial and Art Department of Iowa Volume IV THE AMERICAN HISTORICAL SOCIETY, Inc. Chicago and New York 1931 FRED T. SCHWOB, the present mayor of Wappello, has given a good account of himself as a native of that town, and his work and character have received repeated testimonials from his fellow citizens in the way of public office and other honors. Mr. Schwob was born at Wapello, March 31, 1895. His father, Theodore Schwob, was born in Basle, Switzerland, was reared and educated in that country, and came to America in 1889. He has been a resident of Wapello for forty years, being one of the old timers of that locality. After coming to America he attended school at night, learned the machinist trade, and has for many years carried on a blacksmith shop in Wapello. He married Louise Grauwinkle, of Wapello, and of their three children two are living, Fred T. and Carl Emanuel, the latter a resident of Springfield, Illinois. Fred T. Schwob attended the common schools at Wapello, graduated from the Atalissa High School in 1914 and after school hours and during vacations he worked in his father's machine ship and mastered the machinist's trade under the careful direction of his father. In 1915 he became an employee of the Ruthenberg Clothing Store in Wapello, leaving that position to join the colors in June, 1917. He was sent to Little Rock, Arkansas, later to Demming, New Mexico, then to Lawton, Oklahoma, and from Camp Upton he embarked with the One Hundred Twenty-sixth Field Artillery. He was with his regiment in France until after the armistice, and received his honorable discharge at Camp Dodge, Iowa, with the rank of supply sergeant. After the war Mr. Schwob resumed work in the clothing store until he was elected sheriff of Louisa County, in 1920. He served two terms in that office, four years, and on leaving office in 1925, established the Wapello Clothing Company. He sold out this business in 1927 and has since been associated with his father in the machine shop business and carries on the work of the establishment during the declining years of his father. Mr. Schwob was elected mayor of Wapello in 1928. He is a Republican, a member of the Methodist Church, and belongs to the Masonic, Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias fraternities. He married, May 25, 1918, Miss Nina Kremer, of Wapello. They have a daughter, Arline Louise, born in 1920. 1. [IOWA] Bio of Fred T. Schwob
    2. A Narrative History of The People of Iowa with SPECIAL TREATMENT OF THEIR CHIEF ENTERPRISES IN EDUCATION, RELIGION, VALOR, INDUSTRY, BUSINESS, ETC. by EDGAR RUBEY HARLAN, LL. B., A. They have a daughter, Arline Louise, born in 1920. 3. In the 1910 federal census he is listed as James Sterrett in Providence, Buena Vista with wife Mabel P. and children. I received the 1915 census and information the children are listed in a 1915 state census. It appears Mabel died then between 1915 and 1920 with their last known address as Webb, Clay County. Thanks to all for the help! Janet I am assuming that you mean in 1915? But I cannot even find this couple in the 1910 census. You say you found them there? Exactly how were they indexed? How did they spell the last name in that census? Cheryl

    3. I am searching for a death date and place for Mabel Pearl Gamble. She was married to James Starrett in 1904 and is listed in the federal census in 1910 in Clay County and by 1920 James is remarried. She was the daughter of Albert H. and Julia A. Gamble. Would someone check the Iowa State Census for 1905? They could be listed in either Clay or Pocahontas County. Thank you so much! Janet

    3. Top o' Don, Like Sharyl's, great Iowa genealogy minds run in the same channel so they would no doubt agree with her. Other sources for similar data would be church marriage records. For example, in the Catholic faith, one of the questions asked of the couple was the church and it's location that they were baptized in. One reason for this was for the announcement of the banns of marriage in the baptizing churches. When you contact these places, civil or denominational, always ask for all the data on the original book/register, not necessarily the doc. you're looking for. Keep in mind, the union did not have to be in the same county the application was processed in. Dick Before they called them tail-gate parties, they were known as Irish wakes! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Don" <dwdwrks2@omnitelcom.com> To: <IOWA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, April 03, 2009 9:28 AM Subject: [IOWA] Marriage License Applications > Does someone know when/if Iowa counties used marriage license application > forms prior to 1920? 3. I don't know about all Iowa counties but here's what I have from some of my research: A marriage in Wapello Co. in Aug 1890 has the name of the bride, her age, her birthplace, her father, her mother's maiden name, and the fact that it was her third marriage . It also gives same information for the husband. Another marriage, same county, in June 1892, the marriage register gives the name of both the groom and bride, their ages next birthday, place(s) of their births, each ones parents' names including the mother's maiden name. Also where and when married, witnesses, certified by whom. Note: Although the application indicated the bride was born in Henry Co. IA, the 1885 IA Wapello Co. IA census says she was born in Jefferson Co. IA. which is correct. juanita > Does someone know when/if Iowa counties used marriage license > application forms prior to 1920?
