    3. Hi Lana, What about the 1850 census I sent you with a 20 year old Warren Harden born in NY living in Illinois with 2 younger brothers with the Schench family? Do you think it is the wrong Warren Harden? Ten years later he is married to a 27 year old wife Aramintha with whom he is also living in 1870. Isn't it possible he was married during the 10 years between 1850 and 1860 and either his wife died or divorced him and then remarried with Hattie taking a different name? Karen ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lana" <lanapiche@sasktel.net> To: <IOWA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 12, 2004 12:59 AM Subject: [IOWA] re:Hattie Harden census lookups > Thanks to everyone for their help... as for your questions, yes, I am positive that Abner Warren Harden was Hattie's father. I have his obituary here, which states that his daughter was Hattie Smith, and a marriage certificate for Sylvanus Smith & Hattie Harden. I'm now thinking that Hattie must have been born between 1850 (when her father was living in New York, unmarried) and 1858 (when Warren's obit states that he moved to Iowa). Being that she married in 1872, and allowing the age of 16 to 22 for her to have married, that would make her birth probably somewhere between 1850 to 1856. I just don't understand why there's no sign of her with the family in census records, when the obit clearly states her as the daughter of A. Warren Harden. Any ideas?? > Thanks again, > Lana Piche' > Saskatchewan, Canada > > > ==== IOWA Mailing List ==== > The IOWA Lists now have their own website with unsub > instructions, list rules and other useful information. > Visit & Bookmark http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~richard/ialist > > ============================== > Gain access to over two billion names including the new Immigration > Collection with an Ancestry.com free trial. 3. I looked for Harriet as well as Hattie since the latter is often a nickname for the former. I find two Harden households in Burr Oak Township, Winneshiek County, IA in 1860 bner W. Harden, age 31, farmer, born in NY Araminta Harden, age 27, born in NY George Warner, age 15, farm laborer, born in IL Halstead J. Harden, age 34, blacksmith, born in NY Ellen Harden, age 30, born in Canada Edgar J. Harden, age 11, born in NY Myron W. Harden, age 9, born in NY Lois A. Harden, age 7, born in NY Beecher W. age 5, born in NY Alvina Willsie, age 20, domestic, born in Canada In 1870 Abner W. and Armanita are still in Burr Oak Township, but there is no one else in the household. 5 doors away is the Halsted Harden family, Ellen, Myron, Lois, Henry W. B., Chloe, age 9 and Sophia, age 83 born in NY East Bridgewater, S. Abington, MA 1860 There is a Harriet Harden, age 13, living in the home of Matthew Lincoln, age 23, and Emily Lincoln, age 21. That all I've been able to find. 1. Anglicized Dutch Names
    2. Sue Thielmann
    3. When I read about finding an anglicized version of a name, I remembered that I have a glossary of names that a researcher put together. This is not an exhaustive list and it is not my original research. Howard I. Durie did an extensive study of the Durier/Duryea/Durie/Duree families in the U. S. and included this glossary. Some one might find it useful in chasing down your immigrant ancestors. I hope this is helpful. The following is from The Durie Family by Howard I. Durie Glossary of Dutch baptismal names The baptismal names of children as entered in the church records have been followed for the early generations. Those for the girls, in particular, were invariably the diminuative or endearment form, a long established custom of the Dutch which persisted into the first part of the 19th century. Generally speaking, no other version was used during this period. Since most individuals in the early days rarely had to write their names, and no standard form of spelling was known, they appear in a variety of phonetic variations on the records. All of them have not been given, but the examples will serve the purpose. 2. Lana
    3. Good morning, Listers! Today I'm trying to find 1850-1860 census records for Hattie HARDEN. She may be in the hh of her father, A (Abner) Warren Harden. In April of 1872, she married Sylvanus W. or M. Smith in Burr Oak, Winneshiek Cty at the home of her father, however she doesn't appear to be in Warren's household in 1870 (don't have a year of birth for her). Also interested in finding records after 1872 for Sylvanus & Hattie SMITH, as this marriage certificate seems to be all I can find on the lady. Thanks so much for any help you might offer. 1. RE: [Iowa] Looking for David Cady after 1870
    2. Hi Sue, Thanks! Yes that is my family in Vinland WI. I can find them in every census but lose David after the 1870 Census is Tama County, Perry twp. Since he is of age I would think he would be listed as a head of household but haven't been able to find him anywhere. In the census it lists his birthplace as WI but they moved about that time so there might be a chance he is born in Troupsburg, Steuben County, NY. Thank you so much for your help, I appreciate it very much.
