Below is part of chapter 23. The whole chapter is on the Iowa History Site. STORIES OF IOWA FOR BOYS AND GIRLs Chapter XXIII BY BOAT AND COVERED WAGON Before June 1, 1833, few white settlers lived in Iowa - perhaps not more than forty or fifty. Nearly all of them were located in two settlements along the Mississippi River in what is now Lee County. One settlement was called Ahwipetuk which meant "at the head of the rapids." Later it was called Nashville, and still later Galland. The other settlement was known as Puckeshetuk, but later its name was changed to Keokuk. Both of these settlements were in the region known as the Half-Breed Tract. At a much earlier date, you remember, Julien Dubuque, Basil Giard, and Louis Honore Tesson had built homes in the Iowa country. Fur traders, too, such as Maurice Blondeau and Jean Baptiste Fairbault had lived in Iowa for a time. In 1820 Dr. Samuel C. Muir crossed into Iowa with his Indian wife and family, and built a cabin at the present site of Keokuk, and in 1829 Dr. Isaac Galland built a home at Ahwipetuk, where others soon joined him. At about the same time Moses Stillwell and Otis Reynolds erected cabins at Puckesheuk. The half-breeds allowed these settlers to stay, but the Indians in the rest of Iowa did not want white men on their land. After the death of Dubuque in 1810 the Fox Indians would not allow any other white man to work the mines. In 1829 they permitted James Langworthy, a miner from Galena, Illinois, to explore between the Turkey and the Maquoketa Rivers; but when he asked to be allowed to dig for lead, they refused. VI ISSUED IN JANUARY 1925 NO. 1 _______________________________________________________________________ COPYRIGHT 1925 BY THE STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF IOWA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Fur Trade in Early Iowa By George F. Robeson The dream of the founders of New France in America to establish "a chain of well-garrisoned forts along the St. Lawarence River to the Ohio and thence down to the Gulf of Mexico" was but a part of their scheme "to retain the trade monopoly in the furs and minerals of the West" and thus "check the encroachments of their aggressive neighbors and enemies" the British and the Spanish. This dream was in some degree translated into action, for at an early date their rude "forts" - in reality merely "traders" huts surrounded perhaps with high fences of pickets or split logs" - began to appear on river banks in the Mississippi Valley. That the Iowa country soon came to be included within the boundaries of this dream realm is not surprising, Teeming with wild animals, the streams and forests of Iowa made an ideal hunting ground for the Indians. But it was not until about 1690 that facilities for bartering the products of the chase were available. Such opportunities were afforded when Nicholas Perrot erected two or three forts or trading posts along the Mississippi River above the mouth of the Wisconsin. Here came the Indians of northern Iowa to exchange peltries for trinkets. Later Perrot built a "fort" opposite the lead mines - probably "near the site of Dunleith on the Illinois side" of the river - thus bringing his wares within easy reach of the customers. Other Frenchmen engaged in considerable trade with the Indians. Posts were established at various places in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois, many of t hem at no great distance from the present borders of Iowa. The French dream of an American empire came to an end, however, when the English defeated the French in their struggle for North America - the Iowa country passing into the hands of Spain. During the period of Spanish control a bitter contest was waged with the English over the Indian trade. The Spaniards complained that the Sioux and the Ioways were unfaithful, giving to the English the fruits of their hunting, but the liberal presents of the British were not able to win over the Sauk and Fox tribes. My ancestors (Duree) in Putmam County, MO at this same time all migrated from KY through IN before settling in Putnam County. It looks like the Baugh family may have migrated a similar route. This family is listed in the 1870 Census for Putnam County, MO. Wm. Baugh, age 37, farmer, born in KY W. Baugh, age 30, Female, born in MO D. Baugh, age 10, Male, born in MO E. Baugh, age 3, Female, born in MO A.W. Baugh, age 9 months, born in MO [note after says OCT, perhaps month of birth] In 1860, Putnam County has this curious listing Darius Baugh, age 51, farmer, born in KY Sarah Baugh, age 48, born in KY Sarah Baugh, age 18, born in KY Caroline Baugh, age 13, born in MO Mary Baugh, age 7, born in MO James A. Carter, age 6, born in OH W.W. Baugh, age 26, farm laborer, born in KY Pure speculation follows: This W.W. could be the same as Wm, perhaps living with an uncle, if he married almost immediately after this census. I am looking for anyone who has access to the 1895 census for Putnam county, Missouri or Appanoose county, Iowa. I am looking for my great grandmother, Amanda BAUGH, who was born in October about 1879. . She was also known as Manda. Baugh was also spelled BOUGH or BALL. It seems that the census taker may have missed this family in 1880 and Amanda was married in 1900, so the 1895 census is my only hope of finding Amanda's parentage. Thanks, Cheryl
