Patricia~ I have a Sarah A. Miller and family that I have been searching for information on. I don't have her b. date, but the date and location of your Sarah fit. Could you please give me more information to see if we have a possible match. I have not confirmed, but have Sarah's parents as John and Sarah, siblings possibly Lucretia, John, Susan and Martha. I thank you in advance. ~Conni ----- Original Message ----- From: "Patrica Wright" <maya@stgelais.com> To: <IOWA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 09, 2005 3:33 PM Subject: [IOWA] ELLINWOOD/MILLER > Good afternoon; > > I have a marriage December 2, 1843 Ross Co., OH for DANIEL HERBERT ELLINWOOD and SARAH ANN MILLER. Check census records - the street name and quite often the address is in the left side bar of the census sheet. You may be able to find date and address in a city directory, if one was published for the area. Try a local library to see if they can be of assistance. I have inherited numerous photos (interior and exterior) of the home where my grandmother and sisters were raised by her mother and four of her aunts. I recall visiting one of the aunts, Nina Falk, at the home, which is located in Essex, IA, in the early 1970s. The house was quite grand, and I believe that the adjacent farm was also their property. I would like to find out the address of the home, and possibly visit Essex to see it someday, but I'm not sure how to go about locating it. My grandmother and her aunt are now deceased, and the house is no longer in the family. I thought it might be as simple as looking in a local phone directory from the 1970s. I could also search property tax records, but I'm unsure of the year the property changed hands, or how long it was in the family. I would like to find out where in Iowa (or elsewhere) I might be able to find a local directory, or where else I should begin my search. Thank you, Kathy
The FamilyHart Online Database was recently updated bringing over 405,000 linked names online. Thousands of names in the database are from Iowa with names from most of Iowa's counties. Many are of Pennsylvania Dutch extraction (Swiss/German). Some are of Irish and Scotch-Irish extraction. Hello Listers ----- Have any of you corresponded with Kay CORSON PEASE recently? I believe she has moved and would like to have her new email address in order to correspond. Thanks, Janan O'Keefe Swanson Janan864@aol.com
I do not think Bertin's name change was magical -- it looks like he was born with the name JOHNSON. 1870 Seely, Faribault County, Minnesota: JOHNSON, Jacob 50 Norway Mary 44 Norway Knute 18 WI Hanah 14 WI Iver 12 MN Ole 9 MN Andrew 7 MN Jacob 5 MN Peter 3 MN They are in Township 105 Range 9, Winona Co, Minnesota, in 1860. Did not find them in 1850 "where they should have been". RC
Dear List, I was wondering if anybody could get access to a census earlier than 1880. I found my GG Grandmother Mary Leidal(I think) on Family Search 1880 census and was trying to track what the family record was before that. This is what I found: Household: Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace Knudt LEIDAL Self W Male W 27 WI Farmer NOR NOR Mary LEIDAL Mother W Female W 54 NOR Keeping House NOR NOR Ole J. LEIDAL Brother S Male W 19 MN Farm Laborer NOR NOR Burton LEIDAL Brother S Male W 10 MN At Home NOR NOR They were living in Emerald, Faribault County, MN in 1880. Mary's husband John(I believe) died sometime earlier. Note Bertin(Burton) was born in 1870, hence he would be ten in 1880. He somehow had a name change to Johnson sometime after 1880. Dave, Was he still in this house for the 1900 census? If so, see who was enumerated before and after. There may even be an identification of the street in the margin of the cesnsus. This should give you a short list of 8 or 10 neighbors that may still have descendants in the area with knowldege of where your great-grandfather lived. Have you gone to the Jasper County courthouse or city hall to look for land deeds, transfers, and assesments? Also city directories (not phone books) can give you an idea who lived there when and when it may have been torn down if it isn't there any longer? If you had ancestors in Nebraska, Iowa, or the Dakotas on January 13, 1888 you may be interested in reading a new book, THE CHILDREN'S BLIZZARD, written by David Laskin. It is a gripping story of an epic prairie snowstorm that killed hundreds of newly arrived settlers. One moment the air was calm; the next the sky exploded in a raging blizzard. By Friday morning, January 13th, 1888, some five hundred people lay dead on the drifted prairie. The author uses historical facts to tell the story of a monstrous blizzard that caught settlers by surprise. Wendell Haack

I had luck at least confirming the presence of an ancestor in an Iowa asylum by looking at the on-line census records for their name in a year they were said to have been there. The census takers in some years did enumerate the inmates, as well as list their "occupations" which were usually the area of the institution where they were assigned to work if they were able. (i.e., "seamstress," "yardwork" etc. or often, "none.") Good luck. Jeanne S.
Does anyone have any information about the Downs Hotel in Vinton, Iowa. Would love to know something about it. A great great Aunt Eslie H Jewel married Mr. Downs and they ran the hotel until at least 1919. thanks for the help Marguerite
