I checked 1920 census on Heritage Quest and find a Fayette in Marcus, Stevens Co. Washington. He is age 61 b. IN and wife is Minnie age 58 b. IN. The place of birth doesn't match so don't know if this is who you are looking for. Grace, born in Iowa
Thank you, Al, for sharing that wonderful site. I had ancestors that came through Castle Garden in 1869, and more in 1872, and it was wonderful to take a "look" at one part of their life. Shirley Siltala
Hi List, For those of you who had ancestors arriving in New York City during the period August 3, 1855 to April 18, 1890, they were processed through a City owned building called Castle Garden. There was a very interesting article published in the Harpers New Monthly Magazine (March 1871) describing the treatment, services, and protection provided the new immigrants arriving in New York City. The Harpers article "A Day in Castle Garden" can be located at the following address: http://cdl.library.cornell.edu/cgi-bin/moa/sgml/moa-idx?notisid=ABK4014-0042-83 There were a number of con artists waiting to scam the new arrivals but for the most part they were kept out of the Garden and the new immigrants had lodging and tickets to their destination, and employment in some cases, before they ever left the building to brave the hucksters outside. As an example, my grandfather landed in NYC October 28, 1875, processed through Castle Garden, and on November 8, 1875, filed his Intention to become a US citizen, in Yankton, Dakota Territory. He must have received good advice and assistance to enable him to finish processing and then travel halfway across the country, changing trains and stations on the way, all in 11 days without knowing one word of English. I have 2 questions to ask if any know. l. Some of my relation have (AFN: and a series of numbers and letters following) How can these be brought up on my computer? I also have trouble bringing up Family Search Ancestral Files (ex. v4.19). Again how can these be raised on my computer? In my case, ignoramnce is not Bliss. Many thanks to whoever can supply me with answers.
My SCHENCK/ SCHANCK family was in Burr Oak, Winneshiek Cty, IA in 1900. Listed were Fayette Schenck (b. Apr 1845 Illinois), his wife Chloe (sister to my g g grandfather, maiden name HARDEN b. June 1860, IA), and their children Bernard H (b. Mar 1880 IA), Inez (b. May 1884, IA), and Ruth (b. July 1891, IA). In 1910, the family was in Wenatchee, Chelan Cty, WA. Inez has died by this point, not sure if it was in Iowa or in Washington, and Bernard's wife Mattie M. (b. 1884 IA) is also in the household. After 1910, they all just seem to disappear. Can anyone help me? Anything after this point for any of these family members would be so greatly appreciated. Lana Piche Saskatchewan, Canada

You can enter any type of scan ["for Kodak Photo CD Pictures, sound files, video files, text files, picture files, and other Picture/Objects"] in the "Scrapbook" section of the program. The "Notes" section is a notepad where you type anything you want and can adjust the font, size & spell check the data for any notes that didn't better fit under another category, such as medical, address, etc. If the notes you want to enter are short, then just type them into the "Notes" section. If they are lengthy or in special handwriting, etc., then scan them to keep in the "Scrapbook" section. Hope this helps. W. Question: If someone had the name given name Hence, and americanized it to Vince or Vincent, what nationality would that likely be? Thanks, Cheryl

Hello, I must have dumped this file because I cannot locate it. Is there anyone still on the list that may have kept it? I sent it off list to anyone that requested it from my local newspaper. Sure would like a copy :) Thanks, Deborah
Great Uncle Delbert was born out of wedlock and much much younger than his half brothers and sisters. He was born almost deaf, and did not have schooling. He worked on the railroad, which probably increased his deafness. His Mother was put out by the family and except for my Grandfather had little attention and even his was not much until later years. At age 35 twas said he ORDERED HIM A MAIL ORDER BRIDE FROM DENMARK.---1905. Family story was that she came to US with no English language. She came to Iowa on a train and with language problem she was set off the train at New Hampton, Iowa. There she remained for a week only saying "Debbie", and Delbert was meeting the train each day at Hampton, Iowa. From cencus records it appears she was born 1869 in Denmark of Danish parents, and grandparents. Only name I have found is Regina J. Christiansen. Delbert's parents were from England and Ireland. As a small child I remember my parents leaving off garden produce at their! small "shack" and not being asked into the house, only once when Delbert was on his deathbed do I remember I or my parents being in their home. Deanee as we called her still not saying any words English but "Debbie" WERE THERE ANY FOREIGN BRIDE TRAINS IN THE EARLY 1900 ERA, ESPECIALLY FROM DENMARK. They never had any children, and no one then or now seemed interested in her story???

You are getting a listing of your directory contents because you have no "index" file. If your site is written in HTML, the index file would be either "index.htm" or "index.html". You need to locate the one which was previously in the "polk" directory and make sure it is transferred to the web server. If its not in your Word setup, go back to your Frontpage setup and locate it. JK Kelly Shaw wrote: > Hello there Iowa list, > I need some help.
