Although one could rent a room only (roomer) or have a room and meals and be a boarder. I'm not sure where the lodger fits in with this. I'd just assumed it was whatever was the local term was for one who rented a room. I wonder if the census takers had specific terms with specific definitions to use for for roomer, lodger and boarder. Along this same line, I also wonder about occupations. There is day laborer, laborer, and farm laborer. It seems like the latter two had regular places of employment and the day laborer worked for whomever needed some one for a few days. This is also just my assumption. Does anyone know if there were enumerators manuals? Have any survived? Listers, thanks for all your replies and help. The question of this location has been solved....it isn't Belton, IA after all. It is Belmond, Wright Co., IA. I was sent census info that proves the place and my ancestors in it. Thanks again, hope I can return the favor. Janice
This is the response I got from Helen. She looked up the terms in the dictionary I think. Thanks to everyone who responded. Kathy Boarder--one who is supplied with meals Lodger--one who lives in hired quarters in another's house Roomer--a lodger. They are much the same, but I would suspect that a lodger and a roomer had to get their own meals somewhere else and all they had was a room.
I was wondering if anyone knew what the difference was when someone was listed as a Roomer, Boarder or a Lodger on the census? Was it just the length of their stay or if they paid for their room? Or both? Or are those just different terms for the same situation? Thanks Kathy Salem, OR

Hello, What state censuss were taken after the 1870 Federal one?? I am trying to track down a little closer to the time frame that this family separated. Good Afternoon All - Wondering whatever happened to Ethel R. Goodwin, the 10 yr. old daughter of John N. and Martha (Brown) Goodwin after the 1900 IA Benton County census enumeration? I know that the father had passed away about 1897 and that mother and daughter (and a son) were back in Vinton, IA by 1900. I can not find Martha A. Goodwin OR Ethel R. Goodwin after that census anywhere (via Ancestry.com). Ethel would've been 20 y.o. by 1910. Can anyone check to see if there was a marriage recorded in IA to Ethel R. Goodwin, born 1890 in IA? Cathie
Hello All, Is anyone on the list from Cumberland, Cass County, Iowa. I am looking for anyone connected to Spies. Thank you, Cheryl

Thanks to the many who contribute to our web site, we've added quite a bit of genealogical and historical data. Biographies, obituaries, gravestone photos on the IAGenWeb Gravestone Photo Project, 1875 maps including the townships, and we are in the process of installing on the web site the 1902 History of Dickinson County of which, so far, we have eight chapters installed. Also Patrick Sullivan's "Sioux City Cavalry" project is now on the web site. We have many to thank for their generous contributions and time in helping our web site grow. They include Colleen Boose, Edward Black, Debbie Clough Gerischer, Steve Kiner, Wendy Pearson, Patrick Sullivan, Peggy Tebbetts, Paul Vasold, and Sharon Workman. Without them we wouldn't be getting anywhere but we also need you to help us grow. Visit our "What's New" page at http://www.rootsweb.com/~iadickin/whatsnewindex.htm to see what we've been doing. And while you are there, make it easier for you to know when we have updated the web site. Instead of trying to remember to come back and see what's happening, all you need to do is copy the url address of the whatsnew page, then enter your email address in the box provided on the page, and then on the changedirection page, paste the url address in the box and enter. From that point on you will be notified when we make an update, no more having to remember to come back to see what's been done. While you are visiting our web site, go ahead and submit the surnames you are researching at this page - http://www.rootsweb.com/~iadickin/surnames.htm . We know this list really needs to grow. We invite those of you who have genealogy documents, photos, records, maps, obituaries, biographies, and so on which pertain to Dickinson county to please contribute them to our site so that your data may be shared with others. Sincerely, Mike Peterson IAGenWeb Dickinson County Coordinator geanie@cox.net http://www.rootsweb.com/~iadickin/
Thank you to everyone who tried to help with this particular brick wall. Those of you who sent info on Fayette W. Schenck in Marcus, Stevens, Washington, despite the closeness of the name this is not my family. This Fayette was also present in Marcus in 1910, when my Fayette Schenck & family was in Wenatchee. Donnie, thank you, I will check anywho for Schencks still in Iowa. RC, yes, I believe the cemetery record you found was, indeed, for my Inez E. Schenck. Thank you, this narrows down the time they moved to Washington to a frame of about 2 years. I do have a little more info on them, if it will help anyone. Fayette C. Schenck owned the Burr Oak Hotel (also known as the Masters) for a time around 1900. He also owned the Burr Oak Mercantile (I am assuming this is a General store) & sold it in 1906. Also, Burr Oak held an "Old Settlers Picnic", with some 3 or 400 people in attendance, which was held on Fayette Schenck's property. I believe the year for this was about 1906 as well. If anyone comes across other info for Fayette & Chloe, please forward it to me. It would be very much appreciated. Lana Piche Saskatchewan, Canada
My grandparents came into the USA via Castle Gardens in 1880-1881 from Norway, going directly to Des Moines Iowa, where they lived, raising 9 children. I am still searching for any relatives or descendants from the family of John Andrew Rasmussen and Bertina Lund Rasmussen from Des Moines, Iowa. Bentina had a sister, Mattie Lund Peterson, and a brother, whom I believe was Andrew Lund, or Andrew Peterson. Andrew died in a county home approximately 1940. I would love to have any information on these families. Nancy Brousseau
