    3. You can obtain Iowa, as well as other state, death certificates by going to www.vitalrec.com and clicking on the state you're looking for records from. Birth, death and marriage information from about 1920 to about 1940 in Iowa are available in Des Moines only. Although there are many records available, they weren't required until the 1900s, at least in Pottawattamie County. 1. Re: IOWA-D bottleneck/ AFN numbers
    2. Vern Taylor
    3. As previously answered the AFN stands for Ancestral File Number. It is a unique number used to identify an individual in the Ancestral File database which is a lineage linked database. Searching by AFN just gets you to a particular individual quicker. Errors run about 25 percent. You can access the AF database at local Family History Centers (FHC) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or online at FamilySearch.org and use the Search tab, or <http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp>. There choose Ancestral File in the left column menu. In the next search window you can search by name, but also by AFN by keying in the number in the lower left box named "File Number". The dash is not used in the search box. The letter "O" was never used and I think the letter "I" was not used because of confusion with the numbers 0 and 1. After selecting a search result, an Individual Record screen appears. Choose a family link at the right side of the screen. Then you get a Family Group Record with a "Download Gedcom" link that can save the group as a gedcom which you can import into any genealogy database. Choosing "Pedigree" gives you a bigger gedcom sometimes. If you have trouble importing gedcom files, see if you can import them as ANSEL format or PAF type gedcom files. Otherwise I'd switch to RootsMagic which never has any problems importing files. The AF database at the FHC works differently because it is a DOS based program and librarians there can show you how to use it. Both versions of AF can show you the submitters of the data and that can be worth checking out. Vern Taylor I have 2 questions to ask if any know. l. Some of my relation have (AFN: and a series of numbers and letters following) How can these be brought up on my computer? I also have trouble bringing up Family Search Ancestral Files (ex. v4.19). Again how can these be raised on my computer? In my case, ignoramnce is not Bliss. Many thanks to whoever can supply me with answers. ===== IBSSG, Editor of the Stockton CA Family History newsletter. 2. The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Thursday, January 16, 1908 CURRENT THOUGHTS:   Happenings Here and There Not Hitherfore (sic) Made Public..... In enquiring (sic) something about family genialogy (sic), the other day, a domestic mixup was discovered in the CURTIS family of this county:  A.C. and FRANK CURTIS, brothers, married two daughters of the late THOMAS GAY.  Also BILLY CURTIS and JOE CURTIS' wives were sisters -- both of the FARBER family   Then a sister of theirs married a SCOVEL and another brother married a sister of MR. SCOVEL -- a sort of trading of sisters.  But this is not all. Their father married for a later wife, the former wife having died, the mother of his son-in-law and daughter-in-law.  Now here is relationship for some genialogist (sic) to figure out. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert January 19, 2005 iggy29@rnetinc.net http://www.rootsweb.com/~ialucas/Main.htm posted at this site with Nancee's permission Deborah

They can also be found as Johann C(h)ristof and Johann Heinrich. Caroline was also know as Sophia Karoline. Marion has also been listed at Mary, Mary Anne, Mary Anna, etc. Fred Ivan was mostly known as Ivan. The family could have come to Iowa from Ohio. Any information on this family would be greatly appericated. Also, the location of the Garnavillo City Cemetery would be great as well. 1. Frantic Over Loss Of Finances ~ Amanda B. Anderson ~ Lucas County, Iowa
    2. The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Thursday, January 2, 1908 AMANDA B. ANDERSON was before the commission, Friday, and was adjudged mentally unbalanced. Her condition was such that it was deemed necessary to take her to the hospital at Clarinda for treatment. She is the wife of FRANK ANDERSON, a Swedish gentleman residing several miles north of Chariton is 43 years of age and they have a family of small children. By hard work and frugality they had secured a small farm and had saved up money sufficient to build a new house and were expecting soon to enjoy some of the more modern comforts of life, but like many others their funds had been placed in the First national Bank for safe keeping and they lost it. Worry over this was the principal cause of her dethroned reason. Sheriff Gittinger took her to Clarinda, returning home on Saturday. This is the first sequel of the kind yet reported and the misery caused by this wholesale defalcation cannot be estimated. This good woman had planned and helped save that the family might enjoy the fruits of their toil only to be overwhelmed by disappointment. There surely is pathos in this and justice cries out against such wrong. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert January 17, 2005 iggy29@rnetinc.net http://www.rootsweb.com/~ialucas/Main.htm posted at this site with Nancee's permission
