It is worth remembering that many towns and ghost towns in the midwest were larger in 1900 than they are today. When the steam engines needed frequent water stops small towns popped up all along the route and flourished for many years only to shrink or disappear when they were eliminated as a train stop. After seeing an old road map that showed dozens of towns that no longer existed, Muscatine photographer John Deason went looking for them and published a book several years ago. Sue
To all who answered my request for deciphering of census info, many thanks. I think all of you figured out that he was a farmer/renter and while it doesn't help me locate him too much, at least the mystery has been resolved. Thank you once again. Judy Neu Springwater, NY
Anyone with census images, can you please assist me in reading the occupation of Alonzo Socy entry 193-188 in Hardin Twp, Hardin Co, IA on the 1870 Census. I believe it says Farmer/???? and since I can't find g-g-g-Uncle Alonzo after 1870, I am wondering if the second part of the occupation entry can give me a clue as to where he might have gone. His actual name is Alonzo Locy, Locey, or Losey and he was between 55 and 58 yrs of age in 1870. The 1880 Census lists only his wife HULDAH Locy and the children and she is not listed as a widow or as head of household, so he may have abandoned the family or died prior to 1880. She subsequently wound up in an asylum and I am still trying to locate where her children were located in 1880. Thank you for your assistance. I have the census image, but just need help deciphering the occupation portion for Alonzo. Judy Neu Springwater, NY
Judy, It is very hard to read but perhaps it says /renter? I read some of the other entries and it seems it might be something he writes on others as well. Hello, I am looking for information confirming that William Kern is buried in Janesville, Bremer County, Iowa. Born 1810 - Died 14 Feb, 1887. Thanks, Byron Buthman
Maybe others were confused by my message also, as the No, I was referring to the message concerning the Wisconsin vital records at this URL : <http://www.vitalsearch-ca.com/gen/wi/_vitals/wide59_t.htm> You can search without clicking on the "Free 14 day" box. I am wondering if the Genealogy. com part is some paid advertising which you can ignore. It actually leads you to this URL: <http://www.vitalsearch-ca.com/gen/wi/_vitals/wideathm-go.htm> which is a free search site. Just follow the directions I gave to find the vital record data. It is not a microfilm of the exact copy, but is an index on microfiche. For those of you who have found ancestors that originated from NY or emigrated through NY to settle in the Midwest, this website offers an excellent multimedia presentation on the building of the Erie Canal and how it helped in the migration process. It also allows you to obtain historical information about the towns and villages along its route. Some of us have discussed pictures in the past and the dating of them--in this one presentation you will see actual photographs of period dress and it may help you date some of those unknown photos. This site also helps find useful information about any state in the union including towns that seem to have disappeared from the map. http://www.epodunk.com/ Judy Neu Springwater, NY

Hi Karen, Since you gave no ages or nativities for the folk involved, I am hoping you are referring to the 1860 Allamakee co census for James 36 & Susanna 26, Stanley, both born Pa. Kidz in the h/h being Ezra 6 (Your Adolphus/Alexander?) Franklin 4 & Elizabeth2. Hopefully, your Susannah re-married prior to marrying Mr. Hudson because in 1870 Cass twp, Clayton co, I find the 3 STANLY children in the h/h of James F. Hestwood & his wife Susannah 36, Pa. Would someone be willing to do a look up for a Suzannah or Hannah Stanley who moved to Clayton County sometime between 1863 (when James, her husband was killed in the civil war) and l880 when she married a John Hudson. I can't be more specific because I can't find more information but she has one son that I know of with her ... Adolphus (maybe Alexander) who was born in l854 in Allamakee, Iowa. He is my great great grandfather and a mystery all by himself!! Thank you. Karenfayef@aol.com
I'm trying to find out something about the emigrants from Lomma to North America. I've been asked to find out something about some men who went to Iowa, but we don't know if they remained there. Here is what I've found out about them: Hjalmar Larsson (born 1890 Lomma). He arrived in 1911 in Gowrie to Sven Larsson. His niece in Lomma says he married a German woman and they had two children. The letters stopped coming around 1929. From his letters home we find that he 1918-1921 lived in Fort Dodge. Sven Larsson was a farmer and lived in or near Gowrie. He was married to Hanna and they had Luther, Matilda, Frans, Oscar, Emma and Charles. August Peter Hansson (born 1881 Lomma dead 1973 Sac City, Iowa) came 1912 to his uncle Sven Larsson. August was married to Hulda and they had Selma, Hans, Ernest, Edith, Malte Margit, Betty and Ruby. 1920 they lived in Roland. Emil Nilsson born about 1992 came 1911 to his friend Sven Larsson in Gowrie. Alfred Lohman (probably Emil's brother) born 1886. They have been settled in Ohto. Helmont Nilsson emigrated in 1914. According to Ellis Island he went to his Uncle Peter Andersen in Sagnacho, Colorado, but according to Hjalmars letter home - Helmont went to Sven Larsson! Helmont was born around 1895 in Lomma. Martin Svensson (born 1888 Burlöv) lived in Gowrie 1930, married to Adina. They had Violet, VIncent, Mae and Charles. If you can help me with more information about the above mentioned persons and/or their families I'd be very grateful. Yours Birgitta Nilsson
No, it is a free website. You can view the micofiche copy without a membership to anything. Go to the very bottom of the page, and put the name in the search box. It takes you to an index with a spreadsheet. Click on "index" (inx) at very top. Find the name you are looking for, then go back to the spread sheet page and find the row of the letter and go to the column under the number. Click on that and it will open the microfiche page with your surnames listed. This cannot be printed or highlighted & pasted (tried both), but at least you get a death date and place (although the county and city are abbreviated and I could not find a key to that). Try it.
