    3. Ginny, I ordered map books from the Farm and Home Publishers. These books are current. With the legal description of the land and the current street names, I found it very easy to physically locate my ancestors' land. Their map books are for sale, by County and run about $30.00 each. I found them worth their weight in gold. Their web site is: www.farmandhomepublishers.com Catherine ----- Original Message ----- From: <GinToney@aol.com> To: <IOWA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, January 31, 2005 2:12 PM Subject: [IOWA] land location in Clarke Co > > I'm new to the list. 1. The IAGenWeb Special Projects
    2. bluebear
    3. Hello Iowa researchers, Our IAGenWeb Special Projects have just been reviewed to see if they meet the requirements we've set for their sites, and they all passed with appreciative, glowing comments from the reviewers. Congratulations to the coordinators--and to you!--for the rich variety of material they're making available. The Special Projects are designed to put online genealogical information that transcends county boundaries, e.g., Iowa in the Civil War, The Gravestone Photo Project, or The History Project. You can read a bit about the Special Projects and find links to them at http://iagenweb.org/state/archives.php. In addition to IAGenWeb's Special Projects, you'll also find links to the Iowa material in USGenWeb Special Projects. I hope you'll take the time to browse the websites to see what they offer. You may discover something that enriches your family history. And you may find that you have something to contribute. :) Greta Thompson IAGenWeb ASC bluebear@new.rr.com

    2. S.E.Osborn (N.M.S)
    3. Judy-- If the info you are seeking is in a book, there is a program called inter-library book exchange program available through your local library. If the book is one that can be checked out, Des Moines library will loan it to your local library and then check it out to you.I've gotten many books from many states that way. 1. One Word 2002 Problem solved
    2. Linda Hedlund
    3. I want to thank you all so very much for coming to my aid in my problem with Word 2002. As I suspected, the answer was a simple one and of course after I asked you all to help me, I found the answer to that problem. The problem was, I scanned in a document into Word but when I wanted to have more than one page, it wouldn't let me, no matter what I did. The answer was in "Page Setup". I had it set for "new page" instead of "continuous". After I changed that, it worked. You are a group. I knew that if anyone would help, it would be someone on this list. Several people have come to my aid. Keep it up people, you are great. If I can help anyone, I will. Thanks again, Linda

    2. Is anyone on the list familiar with obtaining copies of information listed in the Des Moines Library catalog files? I have found a possible obit for one of my family members and would like to get a copy, but can't figure out how that is done when I do not live in Iowa. If someone can enlighten me, I will write to them and see if it can be sent in return mail. Thank you, Judy Neu Springwater, NY

    3. Remember that in old script writing, an L often looked like an S. The thing that I do is compare a name spelled with S - such as Samuel - on the census with one that I think should be an L on the same page. It helps me decipher the writing sometimes. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sue Thielmann" <sthielmann@machlink.com> To: <IOWA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, January 29, 2005 6:43 AM Subject: Re: [IOWA] CENSUS HELP > Judy, > I agree that it says farmer/renter. Usually a place for the indigent. She is listed as having had 3 chhildren, all 3 living in 1900. Beware of the children listed columns. We have a woman in our family who is listed in 1910 as having had 2 children, both living, yet we know for a fact, and in fact have the original birth record for one of them, both children were adopted. In fact we also know that in 1905 she was admitted to the Mayo Clinic to be checked for fertility and that she was told she could not have children. Annie in Minnesota

    3. Judy, I agree that it says farmer/renter. There is another entry on the same page that is easier to read and clearly say the same. Heritage Quest lists the last name as SOEY (although it is clearly Socy on the census image). I don't find any other leads under SOEY In 1900 Hulda C. LOCEY, age 60 is listed as "inmate" at the poor farm in Hardin County. Usually a place for the indigent. She is listed as having had 3 chhildren, all 3 living in 1900. In 1920 Arthur C. LOCEY, age 54, born in PA, father born in PA, Mother born in MA, is listed with his family in Franklin County, IA. Franklin and Hardin Counties are adjacent. That's as close as I come from your information. If you think that Arthur C. is one of the sons, let me know. I'll send you the other information from the image.
