    3. If they were in Clayton Co. in 1880, then I think that the community of Motor you are referring to is in Clayton Co. In the 1875 Illustrated Atlas of Iowa I don't find any Motor in Warren Co, but there is on in Clayton Co. I have pictures of my ancestors taken at Motor mill in the early 1900s and I have there. It is a wonderful historic site now. If I can be of further help, let me know. Grace, born in Iowa

    3. Does anyone know an easy way of transferring census images off Ancestry.com into acrobat reader or into a .pdf file for acrobat reader? Also I have 4 census's coming from LDS in Salt Lake UT.1885 & 1895 Clayton & Fayette co's. If anyone needs something found on these census's Please e-mail me direct and do not post on this board. Keeping with the kind and helpful spirit of this board, I'm willing to look for your stuff while I'm looking for my stuff, no charge. They are due in this next week but due to LDS remodeling, who knows. Please be specific and let me know soon as I will only be going through each once. Scott Natims2003@yahoo.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! 3. Thanks to the Fayette co. Historical society, I've solved a 7 year mystery but naturally opened up a few more.According to marrige return, Leona Jane Baker(or fay) gave birth July 1st 1878 to Maud Amanda Fay in Motor, Warren co IA.The 1880 census shows maud with aunt Hibbert in Clayton co Father Ambrose in same county.I have a feeling Leona died during child birth because we can't find Leona Baker anywhere. Is anyone familiar with cemeterys in Motor? Would there be any newspapers available for that period in Motor? Would appreciate a litle help on this mystery. Scott __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! 1. PACKWOOD in Iowa - Monona Co - KRYGER in Fremont Co
    2. Kaye Steward
    3. Hello listmembers, I have recently had a bit of a breakthrough in my search for Geneva Ann KRYGER, my grandmothers' long-lost sister! By searching the 1900 Census records on Ancestry.com by first name, I found a Geneva Ann married to a Larkin Sneed (or Sneed Larkin) PACKWOOD. The census record indicates she is about the right age, in the right location, and her father was born HOLLAND (not all that common in Iowa at the time)... so I'm quite hopeful that I've found a lead to one of my most frustrating missing pieces of the family puzzle. The 1895 IOWA Census records also list the family - and while the info doesn't match exactly (as usual), I'm sure it refers to the same family. At the end of this message is the info I've found (names, dates, etc)- now it is time to try to verify or disprove the link! May I please have the help of anyone on the list who can answer the following questions? (1) Is anyone else on the list researching the PACKWOOD family in Iowa in the late 1800s? (2) Does anyone have any info about the Larkin S. or Sneed/Snead Larkin PACKWOOD family? (3) Does anyone have access to any records (other than Ancestry and Familysearch) that would help me find the following records: (a) marriage record for Larkin S (or Sneed Larkin) PACKWOOD? - est timeframe 1889-1891 - in IA - likely Monona Co? (b) birth/christening records for any of their 4 children in the 1890s - hoping that one of them might list the mother's maiden name (c) death record for Vernice Imogene Packwood, female, born est 1894 - likely died before Census was taken in June, 1900? (d) death /burial record for Geneva or Genevia Ann/Anna PACKWOOD - likely between 1900 and 1910 - likely in Monona Co, IA? Below is what I have located - with many thanks in advance for any assistance or suggestions you can provide, Kaye Steward INFORMATION FOR PACKWOOD family: Sneed Larkin (or Larkin Sneed) PACKWOOD, white, age 37 (b. est. 1858), born Wapello Co IA,[from 1900 US Federal Census - white male, head, born April 1857 in Iowa, age 43, married 10 years, father born in Virginia, mother born in Indiana, Farmer, Rents land] Genevia Anna Packwood, white, age 22, born Mills Co IA [from 1900 Census - Geneva Ann, white, female, wife, born July 1872 in Iowa, age 27, married 10 years, had 4 children, 3 still living, father born in Holland] (Note from Kaye Steward: I believe this may be Geneva Ann KRYGER, daughter of Peter KRYGER and Sarah Elizabeth STEVENS, born 1875, family living in Ross, Fremont Co, IA.for 1880 Census; dates mean she was married at age 15 or so) CHILDREN Florence Minnie Packwood, white, age 3, born Monona Co, IA (from 1895 IA State Census) [1900 US Federal Census - Florence, daughter, born June 1891, age 8, born Iowa, both parents born Iowa, at school] Vernice Imogene Packwood, white, age 1, born Monona Co, IA (from 1895 IA State Census) (Note from Kaye Steward - this child may have died -not listed in 1900 Census) Wesley Packwood, son, born August 1896, age 3, born Iowa, both parents born Iowa Esther Packwood, daughter, born April 1899, age 1, born Iowa, both parents born Iowa

    3. I checked some census records for you, and here is what I find: 1900 census, Winnebago County, Iowa, Forest, District 194. Philip Howrey, b. May 1856, age 46, b. IA, father b. IN, mother b. KY, farmer Emma Howrey, b. Feb 1864, age 36, wife, married 19 years, gave birth to 7 children, 7 survive Billie (?) Howrey, daughter, b. Jul 1884, age 15, b. IA Charles Howrey, b. Apr 1886, age 14, b. IA Carrie Howrey, b. Mar 1889, age 11, b. IA (your ancestor) Thorut (?) Howrey, son, b. Jan 1891, age 9, b. IA Kate Howrey, daughter, b. Aug 1894, age 6, b. IA Maud Howrey, daughter, b. May 1898, age 2, b. IA By 1910, the family is in Custer Co., South Dakota, District 12, and living next door is James M. REYNOLDS: Dwelling 435. James M. Reynolds, age 34, single, b. IA, father b. Ireland, mother b. Vermont, shop owner. Dwelling 437. Philip D. Howery, age 55, b. IA Emma F. Howery, age 46, b. IA, gave birth to 8 children, 8 survive Catherine L. Howery, age 16, b. IA, single Maude I. Howery, age 12, b. IA, single Esther F. Howery, age 8, single, b. IA In 1910, Carrie (Howrey) Hamilton is living alone in Aberdeen, SD as follows: Carrie Hamilton, head, age 21, widow, gave birth to 2 children, 2 survive, b. Iowa, parents both born Iowa, dressmaker (Her children are not listed with her, and it states that she is a widow. ) Apparently when she went home to Custer Co. to visit her parents, she met Mr. James Reynolds and they married. By the 1920 census, James and Carrie are living in Oregon, with children Harold and Ralph Reynolds. If Carrie had two children by Mr. Hamilton, I don't find them. I also don't find a marriage in either South Dakota or in Iowa for a Carrie Howery or Edith Howery or Howrey. I also don't see any affiliation with the railroad. Mr. Philip Howrey appears to have been a farmer. Also, in the 1910 census for Custer Co., South Dakota, is Charles Howrey (notice spelling), who is apparently the son of Philip and Emma: #422 Charles F. Howrey, age 22, single, b. IA, father b. IN, mother b. IA, farmer I hope this helps you. ----- Original Message ----- From: <SouthernBelRoots@aol.com> To: <IOWA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, February 03, 2005 12:46 PM Subject: [IOWA] Custer County and Iowa Lookup > Hello > I am looking for any info pertaining to Cary Howery Hamilton,James Reynolds, > any Hamilton especially a Charles Hamilton. > I am looking for the first husband of my gr grandmother Cary Edith Howery > Hamilton who would later become Cary Reynolds. > They may have been affiliated with the railroad. > They may have been in Custer County, SD ,a surrounding town or in IOWA. 3. Mr. Thurmond, Your adoption search is intriguing to me. I have been searching for my Mom's birth family since her death nearly five years ago. My search effort has been persistent and quite successful overall. Mom was born in 1924. She had her original adoption papers that the adoptive parents kept all these years. Those papers gave just enough information for me to get the search started. Do you have such adoption papers? From what you have told us, you do have some information, which is good. I did a search of the census records that are available. Federal Census 1920 Hamilton County, Iowa Liberty Township Albert Thurmond, head of household (his wife's name appears to be Jane...or at least a word that ends in ane/s) Children listed are: Ada, Nellie, Bessie (this must be your mother) age 8 in 1920, Ethel, Leatha, Raymond, Loyd (but not sure of that spelling), Clifford.... In this same household....showing as a brother (to the head) is: Joe Schachtle I also find this same family..... Federal Census 1930 Hamilton County Williams Township A.H. Thurmond, head of household Wife's name is clearly spelled out as Eva A. (according to her age it appears to be the same woman he was married to ten years earlier in the 1920 census) Children: Ethel, Leatha, Raymond, Loyd, Clifford, Henry, Emett, Vrelle (the daughter Bessie is clearly missing in 1930) This is a start...I realize that you might have this information. Contact me off list. I will gladly help in any other ways that I can. I have other ideas that could be pursued. 2. Many thanks to all of you who came to my assistance when I wrote asking for information on the Des Moines Library and its procedures. Having no library close by, it is difficult to access things via inter-library loan, but some of you who live in the area offered to get a copy for me which I very much appreciate. Please know that should you need help finding things in NY, I will do my best to assist you. We may not have a library close by, but we do have other resources and there is much joy in helping others. Thank you again for coming to my assistance. Judy Neu Springwater, NY

    1. Looking for a Thurmond family
    2. The THURMOND'S that I am interested in, lived around Dows, Iowa. I was born 7/2/1928 in Kansas City, Mo., My mother, Bessie Thurmond, is now deceased and I never had a chance to know who my father could have been. I was adopted at a very eary age and just resently, started to search for answers. By writing to the Iowa group, I was hoping that someone could give me some source to go to. Thanks John T
