    3. The New Era Humeston, Wayne, Iowa March 8, 1899 THE NEWS IN IOWA An Unusual Accident FORT DODGE, March 2 - A valuable horse belonging to George Keppner, a railroad contractor, was killed as a result of a rather peculiar accident. The horse was being driven parallel to the railroad track on which an engine was moving. On passing the engine the horse became frightened and instead of whirling away, he jumped immediately in front of the engine and was killed, although the driver, fortunately, was not injured. Fatal Fire in Monona County ONAWA, March 4 - The farm house occupied by the family of Joshua McGee, six miles from Onawa, burned and his two children, a boy 3 years of age, and a baby girl, were burned to death. COUNCIL BLUFFS, March 2 - Two men were instantly killed and one seriously injured by the falling of several tons of frozen earth at the dirt bank of Wickham Brothers. The dead are J.B. Black, of Council Bluffs, and F. Kroner, of Atchison, Kansas. The injured is C.P. Read, of Council Bluffs, limb broken, severely bruised and possible internal injuries. The accident occurred on a dirt bank from which Wickham Brothers were hauling dirt for the grade of the Fort Dodge & Omaha railroad. Without any warning several tons of dirt, which had become loosened by action of the frost, came tumbling down from a height of about 25 feet. Black and Kroner were working directly underneath where the mass of earth fell and were instantly killed. Their heads were crushed and their bodies terribly mangled. A number of men shoveling in close proximity to the bank had narrow escapes. Killed Child and Self. CEDAR RAPIDS, March 3 - Despondent over his hopeless case of consumption and the sickness of a year-and-a-half-old child, Frank Metela, a Bohemian saloonkeeper, fired two bullets into the body of the child and then shot himself through the heart. They were alone in the house at the time and when discovered Metela's body was found in a sitting posture in a chair with the clothing almost burned off. The baby was lying on the bed a few feet away, and both were dead. Metela left a letter explaining why he committed the deed. The "Rev." Mr. Coffey Sentenced. DES MOINES, March 2 - "Rev." W.N. Coffey, the Drake University student who stole $600 in gold from his landlady, Mrs. Magart, and who later pleaded guilty in the district court to the charge of larceny, was sentenced by Judge Bishop to three and one-half years in the penitentiary and to pay the costs of the action. IOWA CONDENSED - Mrs. I. Calender, of Ackley, was burned to death. She was an invalid and was at home alone. When her husband returned he found her burned to a crisp. The house was full of smoke and it is not known how it caught fire. - A desperate attempt to commit murder occurred a few days ago in the Woodbury county jail. Archie Harris, about 18 years old, a tramp, fired two shots from the door of his cell, injuring another prisoner in the arm. Just how the boy got the revolver is not known, but it is supposed it was smuggled to him by some friend. Cathy Joynt Labath Iowa Old Press http://www.IowaOldPress.com/

    3. New Era Humeston, Wayne, Iowa March 7, 1900 THE NEWS IN IOWA TRAGEDY AT WEIR CITY John Davis Fatally Shoots William Halloway BUSSEY, March 2 - A shocking tragedy occurred at Weir City, a coal mining suburb one mile south of Bussey. A dance was in progress at the house of a miner named John Davis and several young men from Bussey proper were in attendance. William Holloway, son of Dr. J.G. Holloway, got into an altercation with Davis and was ejected from the house. It is stated that Halloway started in again with a knife in his hand and that Davis drove him out with a stick of wood. Davis is said to have then got his rifle and took up a position to guard the door and when Halloway again appeared in range Davis fired and Halloway turned and walked half way around the house and fell, expiring almost instantly and without uttering a word after he was shot. The ball passed through his left arm, striking the body near his suspender buckle and ranging through the body in a slightly downward course. Sheriff Davis arrested the murderer who readily gave himself up. Davis is the man who was suspected by many of being guilty of the murder of Dan McCarthy of Marysville some years ago, but no proof was ever found against him. Woman Awarded Damages GOLDFIELD, March 3 - Mrs. Martha J. Beaver, wife of Jonas Beaver, formerly of Goldfield, sues the town of Eagle Grove for injuries sustained from a defective sidewalk. At the last term of court Mrs. Beaver sued for $8,000 damages and the jury brought in a verdict of $2,300. Ex-Sheriff of Dallas County Killed. DES MOINES, March 1 - Justice Halloran decided against the defendant in the case of the state against A.D. Ehle, of Des Moines. He was charged with selling adulterated milk. A fine of $25 was imposed. An appeal will be taken. WEST PROBABLY MURDERED. Des Moines Criminal Believed to Have Died from Poison. DES MOINES, March 2 - John West, alias, "Joplin Red," who was found dead in bed at the Northwestern hotel did not die a natural death. This fact has been established by the autopsy just completed by County Physician Shope. In the report furnished Coroner Ankeny he states his opinion that West came to his death from some unknown poison, taken into the stomach voluntarily or otherwise. It is stated that West's former pals were not averse to his being made away with, and that they succeeded in accomplishing what they may have considered necessary to their own safety. Shortly before his death West returned from Chicago with between $600 and $700 which it is supposed he got by giving information of a proposed attempt to rob the Adams Express Company. Family Poisoned. HUDSON, March 1 - Nine members of the household of Robert Wyett, living five miles southwest of Hudson, are very sick, as the result of eating canned vegetable oysters. The poison is supposed to have been wild parsnip, which had accidentally got mixed with the plant. The dish was eaten for dinner and soon all were taken violently ill. Neighbors summoned physicians and two doctors and friends labored with the stricken family all night. All are now believed to be out of danger. Suicide of a Little Girl. FORT MADISON, March 3 - Hazel Rogers, 12 years of age, a bright and prepossessing child, committed suicide by shooting herself in the heart. Although little is known regarding the cause, it is believed she grieved over a childish love affair until death seemed the only relief. Said to Be Short $20,000 WATERLOO, March 3 - A.I. Breckenridge, for several years secretary of the Perpetual Building and Loan association, has been arrested, charged with embezzlement. His shortage is claimed to be nearly $20,000. Wine and women are the alleged causes of his downfall. Brevities - An explosion at the farm house of Gustavus Horn, four miles east of Dunkerton, wrecked his house and injured his two young children so badly that they will die. The explosion is supposed to have resulted from a keg of gunpowder stored in the garret. - Mrs. Martin Renegar, wife of a well known farmer near Clarion, committed suicide a few days ago by hanging. 3. New Era Humeston, Wayne, Iowa March 6, 1895 SELECTED HAWKEYE MENTION Murder at Newton Ex-Sheriff Zollinger Reaches his Home Bleeding and Dying. NEWTON, Feb. 26 - This community was greatly shocked when the news spread that J.R. Zollinger, a prominent merchant and an ex-sheriff, was found dead and had probably been murdered. Mr. Zollinger left his place of business about 9:30 and when he reached home his wife noticed blood flowing down over his face, and, on inquiring what was the matter, he stated that he had fallen or been hit. These are the only words he spoke. A physician was summoned and on examination a large gash was found on his head. He never regained consciousness, but died between 12 and 1 o'clock It is a very mysterious case, some believing he was waylaid, and the thug, failing to bring down his victim, had fled without accomplishing his full purpose, that of robbery, nothing on his person having been taken. Others think he was overcome with a stroke of apoplexy and struck his head against an electric wire pole. Whichever it was happened within a few rods of his home. Two clubs were found near the spot where the first blood was visible, which makes it look like a case of murder. Mr. Zollinger had been a captain in the army, and his funeral was conducted by Masonic and G.A.R. organizations of Newton. A Romantic Tale Shady Grove Merchant Marries to Avoid a Damage Suit. INDEPENDENCE, March 4 - Otto Stumma is a merchant of Shady Grove who for the past year has had hankerings toward the matrimonial state. In answering an advertisement he formed the acquaintance of a young lady in Indiana and considered himself settled for life, but the lady had other admirers and one day surprised him by announcing her marriage. Otto's heart was badly damaged, but he applied the cement of courage and wrote to the cause of all his grief for recommendations to another desirable young lady. Miss Maud Avery is a native of Nashville, Tenn., and a southern belle of the most dashing type. For four years she has worked at the dressmaker's table and wearying of this toil she longed for a home of her own and accepted her friend's recommendation. The day was set, and ten days ago she arrived in this city. Stumma called at the hotel and set Sunday for the wedding day. Sunday arrived, but no groom, also Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday Stumma came to town, but was in a very reluctant spirit, and it was not until visions of a damage suit were before him that he consented. An Insane Act Dead Body of Charles Vetter Found in a Cornfield. CARROLL, March 1 - A few days ago the dead body of a man was found in a cornfield near Halbur. Investigation by the sheriff and coroner disclosed the fact that the corpse was that of Charles Vetter. He was a cripple and by his side lay two canes and a bottle of strychnine and some orange peelings. Vetter was lying on his face, which was black, one hand grasping with the grip of a vice some binding twine, the other his overcoat. The bottle of strychnine was half empty and cracked. In his pockets were found $100 in gold, $6,50 in silver and some deeds, tax certificates and receipts. The theory is that he took half the strychnine - enough to have killed half the people in the township - and then at the orange to remove the bitter taste. Vetter was a bachelor about 60 years old, and comfortably fixed. He lived with his brother, and for several weeks has complained of a terrible pain in his head, and has been subject to fits of melancholy. CONDENSED ITEMS - A few days ago a drunken row in the town of Thompson ended in one man being morally [sic] wounded and the perpetrator under arrest. The circumstances are about this way: A brother of the celebrated Eugene Riley, who was chewed by a bull dog a few years ago, in company with one Whitrock, filed up on illegal whisky and went down to August Gartke's blacksmith shop to get him drunk and induce him to go on Riley's bond, or perhaps, compel him to. When Gartke refused Riley assaulted him with a club and Gartke returned the assault with a large monkey wrench, and broke Riley's skull. Riley is expected to die. - A noted criminal has been received at the Anamosa prison from Fort Dodge in the person of Henry Gillespie. He is a mulatto, and has since his residence of three years in Fort Dodge commanded the good will of all with whom he came in contact on account of his great strength and fierceness. About the middle of December there was confined in the city jail for prostitution a girl by the name of Lena Anderson. During the night some one forced the lock from the door and gained an entrance to the cell, blew out the candle the defenseless girl had burning and committed the crime of rape. In the morning the girl told the story of the assault upon her person and Gillespie was arrested. At a preliminary hearing he was bound over to await the action of the grand jury. He was indicted and his trial was had recently. The jury after being out five hours returned a verdict of guilty. The case created all the more interest on account of the reputation of Gillespie previous to his going to Fort Dodge. He came from Sioux City and from what was reported at the trial and what was leaked out since, he is supposed to have been implicated in the Haddock murder case. At the time of his going to Fort Dodge his check was good for $5,000 and he still owns considerable property. For the past year up to the time of his arrest he has been assisting the city of Fort Dodge in various ways and had behaved himself as a gentleman. There will be no trial jury the first week of the term. It is not known yet which judge will try the Adams case, but it is thought probable that Judge Blair may hold court the latter part of the term, as Judge Tolerton finished out Blair's term in Delaware county. - Gen. James A. Williamson, ex-commissioner of the general land office, and for many years a resident of Iowa, was recently awarded a medal of honor for conspicuous gallantry during the late war. Gen. Williamson is naturally somewhat proud of this fact, and as a sort of celebration of the incident he gave a dinner at Washington to Gen. Dodge and the Iowa members of Congress who served in the army of the union. Cathy Joynt Labath Iowa Old Press http://www.IowaOldPress.com/

    1. [IOWA] Iowa Marriage Under the Stars!
    2. Linda Ziemann
    3. Maybe this was one of your ancestors? Thought you all would enjoy this old news article that I found while transcribing for the IowaOldPress. Can't you just see this happening!! What a hoot and what a memory to share with your grandchildren!! LeMars Semi-Weekly Sentinel January 26, 1937 PLEDGE MARRIAGE VOWS UNDER STARS Ceremony Is Performed In Car Amid Snowdrifts A wedding in an automobile, with snowdrifts for decorations, twinkling stars for altar appointments, and the tooting of a freight train for the wedding march, Friday night, took place on highway 75, just across the county line, in Plymouth county, says the Sioux City Journal. The bridal couple was Miss Doris Still, 18, and Raymond Scott, 24, both of Sioux City. They thought to obtain a quiet wedding without the benefit of too many friends by getting the license in LeMars, about 5 o'clock Friday afternoon. The couple then came to Sioux City and called on Rev. John Hantla, of the Wall Street Mission, to officiate. When Rev. Hantla discovered that the license had been obtained in Plymouth county, he informed the couple that the wedding would have to be performed there, too. So, taking witnesses, the bride's mother and Mrs. Hantla, they drove across the line and the clergyman performed the ceremony. Because of the crowded condition of the car, the bride sat on the bridegroom's lap during the ceremony. 3. P.S Marthann, the WW1 draft registration card for Andreas Reuwsaat lists his wife as Emma Louise so I'm hoping this is the correct family. 3. Marthann, Ancestry's 1930 index of sheet 7A is actually NARA film pg 38A. The individual on line 50 is indexed as Andrew Renwaast, but on Ancestry, the next page takes you to NARA pg 39A and it does the same on HeritageQuest. I then went to Ancestry's 1920 index for Nishnabotny twp. where I found the household of Andrew Renwsaat [Andreas Renwssat] . His wife is Emma L. 28, kids Henry C. 8, Mary G. 6 & Ernest L. 3 3/12. But I could not find any of these h/h members indexed on Ancestry in 1930. Dick May you live to be a hundred, with an extra year to repent!
