Hello Herb, I was looking at your web site with the descendents of Richard Wright of Rowan Co. and noticed that the Gilstraps tie into Bennetts. I couldn't tell exactly where they connect, but I noticed that you have Marquis Field Bennett and Martha Ann Myers. The parents of Marquis Field Bennett are John Bennett, Sr. and Nancy Ann Prather., both born in NC and died in Sparksville, IN. I am descended from Marquis' sister, Delilah, who married Townsend Nicholson. I have more information on the family of John and Nancy Bennett. Hi Linda, I believe there may be some kind of a mix-up here as to the children of Joshua Newby. These were the children of Samuel Newby III (1776 NC - 1859, Wash. Co, IN.) Samuel's will information comes from "Abstracts of Wills of Washington Co, IN, 1808-1902" by Julie Davis and is recorded in Wash. Co's Will Record A, pp 539-540. His will was dated: Feb. 27, 1857 and probated Feb. 13, 1859. Also, Nancy Newby wrote an obit for him in the CHRISTIAN RECORD, Third Series - Elijah Goodwin, Editor and Publisher, Indianapolis, IN, Vol. III no. 10, Oct. 10, 1859, pg. 320. Rebecca Newby was b: May 9, 1824, Wash. Co and d: March 23, 1911, Wash. Co. She married Empson DURNIL on May 4, 1844, Wash. Co. Samuel Newby III had been married 2 times. 1) Peninah HOBBS, had 4 children (incl. Elisha, b: 1806, Randolph Co, NC, md: Mary GREEN in 1829, Wash. Co. and Sarah, b: 1802, Randolph Co, NC who md. the FISHER) 2) Mary BEAMAN, b: abt. 1793, NC who was the mother of 10 children. Mary BEAMAN was the sister of Peninah Allene BEAMAN who was the wife of Anderson PAVEY (I am a direct desc. of Anderson & Peninah Pavey.) Samuel Pavey III and Anderson Pavey are both buried in the old Newby Cem. in Washington Co. Thought I might find Rebecca in one of my Washington Co cemetery books, but didn't. There was an Aaron Gilstrap, son of John & Abigail, on the 1850 census there, Posey Twp, family #342. The nearest "Rebecca" was at family #346, Rebecca Hall, d/of Asa and Sarah Hall. That might be a possibility. She is shown as age 19, which would be about 1830/31 birthdate. However.... this might be a better lead: Abstracts of Wills, Washington County, Indiana 1808-1902, publ by Washington county Historical Society, p.66: Joshua Newby of Washington County, Indiana Date: March 11, 1858 Probated: March 10, 1859 Recorded: Will Record A, pages 542-543 Wife: Mentioned --not named Sons: Elisha; Jesse; Elijah and Samuel, Jr. Daughters: Nancy Caroline Newby; Anny Harmon; Pernina Harmon; Mary Wright; REBECCA DURNIL; Elizabeth McElroy; Kesiah Everline Smith; Sarah Fisher and Marthy Ann Beard Executor: Son, Samuel Witnesses: AARON GILSTRAP and JOHN GILSTRAP You said Rebecca and Aaron married in 1904, so is there a possibility she was a widow when they married? Possibly her maiden name was Newby, married name Durnil? That is the only references I found to Aaron Gilstrap in any of my Washington county books. Hello All, It's been quite a while since I've posted this query. Hopefully, there's new information out that can help me ... George CROMER, b: 1800, VA, d: 1841, Harrison Co, IN, married 1st: Jane WALKER and some say 2) Hannah HILL. To my knowledge, this marriage has never been documented ... has it ever surfaced? ... I believe he married 2nd: Mrs. Rebecca (COLLINS) SMITH, Oct. 21, 1837, Washington Co, IN. Rebecca CROMER is listed as a widow on the 1850 Harrison Co (Blue River twp) census. Information has surfaced that William L. CROMER (son of George & Jane) married 2nd a Hannah HILL. Also, a daughter (Elizabeth Jane CROMER) of George & Rebecca (Collins), married William J. HILL in Knox Co, IN, 1864, so there are a couple of HILL connections with this family. This William L. Cromer (of Washington Co, IN) vouched for the age of my ancestor (Jacob C. Smith, son of Rebecca) when he married (Harrison Co, 1856.) Much of this information is not documented by me. I do have a little more information if anyone is interested, I would be willing to share. Thanks. Marsha IL
