I'm trying to sort out the different CHARLES families that were in Washington Co, thru 1850. On the 1850 Wash. Co, Jackson twp census, pg. 298, there is a William CHARLES, 60, b: KY along with Elizabeth, 50, b: KY ... on pg. 272, there is a Levin Charles, 26, b: NC and an Elisha Charles, 30, b: NC. Does anyone know how these CHARLES' are related? Was the KY birthplace for William Charles in error (should it have been NC?) Does anyone have any further information on William? 1850 Wash. Co. Franklin twp census shows a Nathan CHARLES, 68, b: MD. Does anyone know if this was actually Nathan Charles, b: Nov. 10, 1780, d: March 29, 1869? Wife is said to have been Sarah TEAGUE (dau. of Joab), but I cannot locate this marriage record (unlike the other Teague-Charles marriages.) Jonathan Charles (brother of Nathan), b: Jan. 22, 1789, Rowan Co, NC; d: 1828, Wash. Co, wife: Margaret Garrison, md: March 4, 1819, Rowan Co (dau. of James Garrison, RS.) Did Margaret remarry? Any help will be greatly appreciated. I believe I have found the parents of Nathan and Jonathan and their other siblings, but I need further documentation. Thanks. Marsha IL

I have just transcribed a document which indicates that an ancestor was residing in Washington County, Indiana in the year 1830 and wondered if anything (and I do mean anything) is available on them ~ ~ this would be Ann WALKER who married John NEWLON (or NEWTON). I have no information as to when, or where, they married. The only info is as stated "of Washington County & state of Indiana" and the document is dated March 2, 1830. Ann WALKER was a sister to William S. WALKER (wife Louisa LEFFLER); Thomas Burton WALKER (wife Nancy WOODRUFF); and Sarah B. (WALKER) McCORMICK (widow of Alexander McCORMICK). Ann was born circa 1800/1801 and most likely the eldest of the 4 children of William WALKER & 2nd wife Jane BURTON. Thank you for taking the time to read this. I have just rejoined this list after a long absence and thought I would introduce myself. I am working on two related families in Washington County, James and Editha Walker and their children - Robert, Rawleigh (Rolly) who married Mary Trowbridge, Hiram, Olive, Isabella who married Isaac Gibson, Agnes who married Francis Myers, Matilda who married Henry Cooper and Elizabeth who married Joshua Harlow. James is supposed to have died circa 1832 in Washington County and Editha may have died before 1850. I have some information on this family and I would be happy to share what I have. I am also trying to locate the possible burial site of Julia Ages, daughter of Isabella and Isaac Gibson who lived in Washington Co. circa 1833-1842. They were supposed to have lived in the Short Settlement for a couple of years and then purchased the Judge Harrison farm near Salem. I wouild like to learn the location of both these places if anyone can help me with this. Thank you for any assistance. Mary F Kelley mfk@valink.com
Hi, folks. I've just joined your list and have my 1st question. I have a death certificate of a Mary (nee Fitzpatrick) Sinnott who died 2/14/1915 in St. Louis, MO. It shows that she was there 9 days and actually resided and is buried in Washington, Indiana. Is this name familiar to anyone? The informant on her certificate is P. B. Sinnott. If this is her son, I'm sure his first name is either Peter or Patrick... as her father was Patrick and she married a Peter. Can anyone help me? Joanne Scobee Morgan jomorgan@swbell.net

Bird's Point Missouri Sunday Morning May 1,1864 Dear Father, I take my pen in hand to let you know where we have landed at. We left New Albany on the 27th and arrived at Cairo late on the evening of the 29th. We were there a short time then moved across the Mississippi river to Bird's Point Missouri and are camped here in sight of Cairo. All the 23th Regiment came in last evening, but Thomas Morgan is not along them. He was left at New Albany. I suppose he will come through on the barges. General Gresham has gone to Huntsville Alabama with what troops there was here and Sam thinks we will follow and Sam thinks we will go to Nashville Tenn. I did not get to see Thomas in time to get my letters. If Mary is there give her this letter. I think we will leave here soon. There was five veteran regiments came down the Miss. River yesterday and there (5 words unreadable). No more at present. W.C. Morgan Letter to Father John Morgan South Boston, Washington County, Indiana

It seems these cemetery books had a number of errors, I've came up with a couple myself. YMMV. They have been in the process of updating/correcting these books in the past few years (I've been told), so maybe the next addition will have the correction. I'd suggest that if you have the correct information you mail and or call the historical society at the John Hay Museum/Stevens Memorial Library: 307 East Market Street Salem, Indiana 47167 812-883-6495 They'd really be the people to talk to as they compiled it. Rebecca Collins (b: 1810, KY) married Tarton SMITH in Harrison Co, IN in 1828. We believe that she is the Rebecca SMITH who married George CROMER on Oct. 21, 1837, Washington Co. They had 3 children: 1) Elizabeth Jane, b: abt. 1838; Sarah A., b: abt. 1841 and George W., b: abt. 1843. Rebecca Cromer is found on the 1850 Harrison Co, IN census, widow. Does anyone know anything about this George CROMER? I've often suspecioned that he was the one who was married 1st. to Jane WALKER in 1819, Knox Co, KY but have never found any proof of this. I have read where Jane died and George did remarry. Does anyone have any documentation on his 2nd marriage? Any information will be greatly appreciated and I'd be happy to share information. Thanks.
