Continuation of the diary of Alma White: October 1897 1--Went to Wess Metz 2--We, Ida Yanney, Ed Gentry, and I went to Crowville to Silas Wood's 3--Came home. Ed took Ida to Ed Sauieres (?). Pa and Ma went to Midway. 4--Washed this morning and went to Samuel Eckles this afternoon. 5--I ironed and sewed. 6--Went to Wess Metzs and helped Lillie make a dress. 7--John Roth and Gertie Davis married. 8--Picked geese. 9--Emily G. White and Arnold Johnson married September 29. 10-Ada Simpson and I went to German church this morning and to see Lucy Haas this afternoon. 11-Had Aunt Rosa Heim lived until today she would have been 43 yrs. old. 12-Had a good rain yesterday. 13-Cut and fit a wrapper for Mamma and went to Fakes. 14-Henry J. St. Clair and Abbie Whittinghill married tonight. 15-Selma Hachmeister here this afternoon. 16-I went to Boonville and got a pair of shoes. 17-Aug & Alice Haas, Fred Haas, Sam White, Bert Tuley, and Ada Simpson here. 18-School began Josie Whittinghill teacher. I went to Eckles and stayed all night. 19-Good rain. 20-Ada Simpson here to stay all night. Cloe Skimmehor got kicked by a horse. 21-Went to school. 22-Went to Pete Veecks to a surprise social in honor of Carrie Hachmeister's 16th birthday. 23-Went down in the woods to see the sawmill. 24-Ada Simpson and I went to Bakers Chapel this morn. Ed Gentry here for dinner. We all went to Wess Metz this afternoon. Ed went on to see Ida. 25-Washed and went to school. 26-Went to Wess Metz after tomatoes and went to school. 27-Went to school. Sophie Siegel and Philip Brown...(?) here. 28-Went to Eckles last night to get Ada to help me with my arthmetic lesson. 29-Mamma went to Newburg to Mrs. Shoots funeral. 30-Went up to Aunt Martha Simpsons today with Uncle Tommy and Aunt Kate White. 31-Came home. Cloudy raining tonight. Had a fine visit. November 1897 1--Rain, rain. I went to school, rain, rain lots of rain. 2--Cleared off today. 3--Grandpa dead 2 yrs. today. Henry Crance and Vera Smith married. 4--Wess and Lillie Metz here for dinner. 5--Went to school. 6--Mrs. Martin Seitz died today. Wess and Lillie Metz, Harve Seitz and I went to Holland to Herman W. Heimmers. 7--Rain. 8--Rain and wind and hale. 9--Cleared off in eve, we came home from Holland. 10-Went to school. 11-Herbert A. Abott died the 5th of Nov. 12-Went to school. Uncle P.S. White's birthday, he is 37. 13-Went to McCoy school house for a pie supper. 14-Went with Mr. W. E. Gentry to Sake Mills to see Ida Yanney. 15-Went to school today and washed after night to keep from missing school. 16-George Hudson buried today. 17-Wrote a letter to Ada Simpson. 18-Went to school. Hay balers came. Harriet Lloyd here. 19-Minnie Wollsey came to help momma cook for balers. Harriet Lloyd and Grandma went to Boonville. John Billups store and content burned this morning. 20-I helped papa put away the baled hay. Momma went to see old Mrs. Tucker, she's very low. 21-Uncle Will Gwaltney and family here. 22-Went to school. Mr. C. Heim of Chandler here. 23-Went to school. 24-Went to school. 25-Thanksgiving day, rainy, at home all day. Chas Roth here this eve. 26-Went and washed for Mrs. S. Eckles and sewed my crazy quilt together. 27-Killed a hog. 28-Sam White here for dinner he and I went to Midway to Uncle Sams. 29-Went to school. 30-Went to Gerhart Rollers to a surprise on Otto he is 14. Minnie Woolsey here helping mamma clean house. December 1--I went to school. 2--I went to school cloudy looks like it might rain. 3--Drizzling rain all day. Pa went to Boonvillle to the Farmers Institute. 4--We all went to Boonville to the Farmers Institute, heard Mr. Riley and Mr. Macham lecture. Sam White came after me to go to a party at John Fakes. Selma is 14 yrs. old tomorrow. 5--Cold and blustery snowed some. 6--Will Russel and Ed Gentry here. Will went to Boonville and went home. Ora Divine died tonight. 7--Old Mrs. Sim Tucker died this morning after a long illness of nervous prostration. Mamma and Noble both sick this eve. 8--I went to school. 9--I went to school after dinner. 10-Went to school had examination. 11-I washed and scrubbed for Mrs. Eckles. 12-Pa and I went to New Elizabeth church it was dedicated by Rev. Talbott. 13-Rainy day. John Hachmeister married yesterday to Lou Broud (?). 14-I went to singing tonight. Stayed all night with Carrie Hachmeister. 15-I washed tonight so I would not have to miss school. 16-Lillie Metz and Nora Seitz here for dinner. 17-Rained and turned cold, ground froze. I went to school. 18-Went to Boonville. 19-Ed Gentry and Ida Yanney came tonight. 20-I went to Maud White's to get a dress cut. 21-I went to school. 22-Mary Kissel and Luther Bracher were married at the German church. Andy Eifler and Tillie Rothert stood up with them. Rev. Helwig married them. 23-I went to school. 24-Went to Maud White's and got my new dress. 25-Ed Gentry came down and Ida and I and him went to German M.E. church to a Christmas festival. 26-Ed and Ida and I all went to Bakers Chapel tonight. 27-Butchered hogs today. 28-Made sausage and rendered lard today. 29-Butchered turkeys today to ship to Vickery Bros. Wess Metz here for dinner. 30-Washed almost all day. Rhoda Baker and children here for dinner. 31-I washed for Margaret Eckles today. Snowing today. to be continued....
