In May of 1900 a body of a young lady was dicovered in Pigeon Creek by a cane drover. Who she was and how she came to her death for many weeks was a mystery. Nora Kifer had disappeared in the vicinity and the corpse was recognized by her father as that of his daughter. How she came to her death and the cause of her body being in the sluugish waters of Pigeon creek was a mystery to the residents of the vicinity. Those working the case slowly but surely began to plait the rope of justice around the neck of Joseph D Keith of near Elberfeld. Eventually their work led to his conviction and death upon the gallows. He claimed his innocence until the last moment when he confessed upon the gallows and alas to the Almighty to be allowed to meet the beautiful Nora upon the other shores. Sept 13 1899 Joseph Keith rented his farm to Zach Kifer the father of Nora Kifer. November Keith returned from Indianapolis and made a engagement with Nora. Dec 13 Keith took Nora upon her visit to Evansville where he registered in a hotel as man & wife. Jan 13 1900 Keith paid to Mrs May Morelock 95 dollars for keeping Nora when he came and stayed at nights. Apr 3 Nora Kifer disappeared from the face of the earth. Apr 13 Zach Kifer recieved a letter supposedly from Nora which was written in red ink and signed LORA. May 13 Keith and old man Kifer had their first talk regarding the disappearance of Nora. Friday May 25 Keith was arrested at his home for the murder of Nora Kifer. Friday July 13 Keith was bound over to court after his preliminary hearing in Boonville. Sept 8 the Warrick Co grand jury brought an indictment against Keith for the murder of Nora Kifer. On Jan 13 1901 sentenced to death at Princeton Ind after a trial of 13 days.
