Continuation of the diary of Alma White: March 1898: 1--I went to John W. Veecks to a quilting. 2--Painted aprons for mother and myself. 3--Mrs. Jennie Partridge and her niece, Miss Lillian Wilkinson, here a bright day. Ma and Noble sick. 4--I went to help Lizzie Fake quilt. Mr. John Ebright here. 5--I helped Lizzie quilt this afternoon and tonight got the quilt out at 10 o'clock. 6--I went to the German church heard Rev. Helwig. Went to McVeys after dinner, their Polly Parrot died this afternoon. A lovely day. 7--Washed. 8--Washed for Mrs. Eckles. 9--Cleaned yard all day. Pa hired Tee Roberts to work for him this summer at $9.00 per month. 10-Cleaned garden. John White here. Pa bought a riviter for $1.00. 11-Rainy. Ironed got a letter from Grandma. 12-Rained all day. T. B. White and Lizzie Fake here. 13-Went to John W. Veecks' after dinner. Jacob Farmer is sick at Margaret Hebners with Small Pox, several families are exposed. 14-Tee Roberts began to work for us today for the summer at $9 per month. Grandma came home from Boonville. Guess Bessie has got whooping cough. A Northern Light, we have a little calf. 15-Ma went to Hoeffers to a quilting. 16-I went to Hoeffers. Pa and Ma went to F. W. Veecks to set up. Eddie very sick. 17-Pa and Ma set up at Fakes. 18-Pa and Ma set up at Fakes. 19-Eddie Fake died age 10 yrs. old. 20-I went to Fakes, served all day. 21-Funeral today at German M.E. Church, bad rainy looking day, rained 19, 20, and 21st, creeks way up. Rev. Helwig preached funeral. 22-Cut and sewed on a wrapper for myself. 23-Finished my wrapper. Aug and Alice Haas' first son born yesterday. 24-Washed and went to DeGonia. 25-I am almost sick, finished my red love knot cushion. Nora Fake here. 26-Murry White brought me some flower seeds. Mamma went to F. W. Fakes this eve. 27-G. M. Nonweiler and family and T. B. White here today. 28-I made me a fine white skirt. Mamma went to Eckles. 29-Ephriam Perigo buried today. 30-Washed and went to DeGonia. 31-Sewed, Mrs. Rothert and Mrs. Tillman here. April 1898 1--Mable Stone here to stay allnight. John Simpson here today. 2--Grandma very sick. Ida Yanney and W. E. Gentry here tonight. Pa went to Boonville after medicine for Grandma. 3--Mr. and Mrs. Eckles here. 4--Ida Yanney left for Evansville today to spend the summer. 5--I washed. Aunt Kate White here very cold, am afraid fruit is all killed. 6--We bought C. Heims share of this place, April 4 for $600, 32 acres. 7--Grandma deeded us 20 acres of land with house on it today. The land lays east of that we bought from Heim. She also deeded Uncle P.S. White __ acres of land north of that she deeded us. 8--Mr. Louis Haas house burned April 6. Grandma is 64 years old today, had my sister Ollie R. lived until today she would have been 11 years old. Lots of company here today. 9--Father and I went to Bakers Chapel to a lecture and pie supper. Richard Raaf lectured on "The Bible". 10-This is Easter Sunday, it rained. 11-I washed and made flower beds. 12-Mamma made soap and I made flowerbeds and sewed flower seed. Maud and Lu Tillman here this afternoon. 13-Rainy. I ironed and cut a wrapper for Mrs. Samuel Eckles. 14-Sewed on Mrs. Eckles wrapper. 15-Worked at a dress for Mamma. Mrs. Austin and Mrs. James A. White here to see Grandma. 16-Aunt Mary Wright here to stay all night. 17-Some men killed a mad dog down by Ash Iron Springs. 18-I washed. Emma Rothert and Mattie Zint here, it rained. 19-Mr. and Mrs. Griffin Wilkinson here. Our hired hand Tee Roberts left us yesterday. Papa hired another today, his name is Charles Wilder. 20-I washed quilts. Lola Haas here. Mama went to Fakes. The accessor here. 21-Mrs. Minnie Woolsey wife of Thomas Woolsey died today. Don Lockharts second son buried today. 22-War! War! The Battleship of U.S. and 6 carload of troops started to Havannah. To fight for the independence of Cuba. Spain still has pocession. Had my grandfather J. P. White lived until today he would have been __ years old. 23-Pa and I went to Mrs. Woolsey's funeral. Mable Stone staid alnight Thursday night and gave me a music lesson. 24-Mamma and Papa went to see Mr. and Mrs. Lasley. A set of gypsies are camping west of us about 3/4 of a mile. 6 of them have been here begging. 25-Bertha Rupperthal here to stay all night. 26-I went to Bakers Chapel and heard Old Harry Davison preach. S. W. (Sam White) came home with me. I went to Lasleys this eve. Charles Wilder began to work for us yesterday at $10.00 per month. 27-Papa sold 20 acres of land to Philip Brown for $400. It is the 20 in timber on south side of road. 28-Mable Stone here to stay all night, gave me a music lesson. 29-John and Ada Simpson came here today. Frank Veecks calf that was bit by a made dog about two weeks (ago) went mad today. 30-We went to Boonville. May 1898 1--John W. Veekcs hog went mad today. S. Q. White came over this afternoon, he and Ada S. and I took a drive, we went around past Philip Rolls and home and at night we went to McOy schoolhouse to hear Geo. Mutchler preach (diagramation). 2--I served. Papa killed J. W. Veecks hog today, it is certain that its hypraphoba. 3--Mable Stone here tonight, she gave me a music lesson. 4--Rainy day, I finished a waist for Noble and made myself a shirt waist. 5--Sewed today. 6--Cold and rainy. 7--Cleared off but still too cold to feel good. 8--Clear and warm. S. White, Ada, S. and I went to Venison to a baptisim and saw Jennie Partridge, Jennie Wilkinson and Lillian Wilkinson baptised. 9--Washed nearly all day. 10-Mable Stone and Geo. Hitchcock here all night. Mrs. Geo. Parker died Sunday. 11-Cleaned house today. 12- " " 13- " " 14-David Shafer died today. 15-Went to the funeral and went to Bakers Chapel and heard Richard Raaf lecture on Temperance. 16-I hear that Nevie DeGarmo and Charles Atkinson were married May 10. We washed carpet today. Sophie Ruppenthal is here helping us. 17-Mable Stone here all night. I took a lesson. 18-Cleaning house. 19-Papered the sitting room today, takes 6 rolls of paper and 22 yds border. Raining and thundering tonight. 20-Today one of our neighbor boys (George Haas) was looking at a gun and accidentally it went off and killed him instantly shooting his right lung out. George was one of the nicest young men of our neighborhood. He was 17 yrs. old. A precious one from us has gone, a voice we loved is stilll. A place is vacant in society which never can be filled. 21-I went over to Haas this afternoon. I sat up all night. 22-We went to the funeral at St. Johns Church. George was down along Otter Creek when the accident happened. 23-Clean the kitchen today. 24-Cleaned the milkhouse. Mable S. here, I took a music lesson. 25-Washed and made me a blue skirt and practised my music. 26-Nellie Giles of Midway here today. 27-Ironed today. 28-I went to Boonville today and got me a new hat, paid $2.50. 29-A rainy Snday. J. W. Simpson passed by today. 30-Pa and Noble went to Boonville. 31-Mable here, I took another music lesson. June 1898 1--Mrs. Kate Kissel died of dropsey and tumor age 57 years. 2--Papa is 40 yrs. old today, we went to the funeral. 3--I ironed and served today. 4--Bakes and cooked. 5--Mr. William Haas became paralized this morn and is unconcious. I went to Bakers Chapel this morn heard Rev. Ophriam Half preach the funeral sermon of Belle Hutchinson wife of John Hutchinson who departed this life July 21, 1897. S. W. (Sam White) and I went to Midway tonight to a children's to do. 6--Picked and canned cherries all day. 7--Mable Stone here all night. 8--A good rain last night, very hot today, Grand Opening of Ash Iron Springs today. 9--Done various things. 10-I went to the P.O. 11-I went to Boonville today got me a white dress. 12-S. W. (Sam White) and I went to Rockey Branch to a baptising and from there to Uncle Geo. Seitz for supper and from there to Browns Chapel to a childrens exercise. 13-Washed. John and Ben Roller are building a summer kitchen for us. 14-Mable Stone here, I took a music lesson. 15-Moved into the summer kitchen tonight. 16-Papa bought a goat June 13 from Mr. Norton for Noble, paid $1.00. 17-Harvesting in full blast. 18-Got done cutting wheat. Mrs. Weyerbacher buried June 15. George Meyers house burned down June 16 about midnight. 19-I went to the German M.E. Church this morn to Bakers Chapel to sining at night. 20-Washed this morning, but my white dress this afternoon. 21-Sewed at my dress. 22-This is the longest day of the year. Uncle T. B. White here. 23-Picked and canned cherries today. 24-Raked hay this eve. 25-S.W. and I went to a surprise party at Hoeffers. 26-A hard rain this morning. Momma and I went to John Roths this afternoon, raining again this eve. 27-I washed and took Grandma and Bessie over to Uncle T.B. Whites. 28-Mable Stone here, I went after Grandma and Bessie. Ona Leslie and Johnnie Lee married June 26. Cut a dress for mamma. 29-Charles Haas and Mamie Schnepper married today. Ironed and helped haul hay today. 30-Picked black berries this eve. to be continued...
