    3. The IGI records from source documents such as marriage records are generally good. However I would caution that you double check anything you get from others when possible. Even things written in stone can be wrong. One of my wife's ancestors back in Vermont has his genealogy carved on his tombstone. But, the carver or the provider of the information got two generations transposed. The writer of a genealogy of this family created a whole new ancestor to explain this family and it was picked up by other books and some believe it to this day. The error was discovered by noted genealogist Jacobus a few years later and he even found where a "missing" generation had lived in a different town for a while. Unfortunately, the correction never seems to get as wide distribution as the error. That is not the only case. Another of my wife's ancestors had her birth date of 1873 written as 1875 on her tombstone. This means she was born 2 years after her father died! Another example. When the marriage records for Monroe Co. Indiana were transcribed, Willis Lamb was written as Willis Lane. It to me years to find that marriage.
