In May of 1900 a body of a young lady was dicovered in Pigeon Creek by a cane drover. Who she was and how she came to her death for many weeks was a mystery. Nora Kifer had disappeared in the vicinity and the corpse was recognized by her father as that of his daughter. How she came to her death and the cause of her body being in the sluugish waters of Pigeon creek was a mystery to the residents of the vicinity. Those working the case slowly but surely began to plait the rope of justice around the neck of Joseph D Keith of near Elberfeld. Eventually their work led to his conviction and death upon the gallows. He claimed his innocence until the last moment when he confessed upon the gallows and alas to the Almighty to be allowed to meet the beautiful Nora upon the other shores. Sept 13 1899 Joseph Keith rented his farm to Zach Kifer the father of Nora Kifer. November Keith returned from Indianapolis and made a engagement with Nora. Dec 13 Keith took Nora upon her visit to Evansville where he registered in a hotel as man & wife. Jan 13 1900 Keith paid to Mrs May Morelock 95 dollars for keeping Nora when he came and stayed at nights. Apr 3 Nora Kifer disappeared from the face of the earth. Apr 13 Zach Kifer recieved a letter supposedly from Nora which was written in red ink and signed LORA. May 13 Keith and old man Kifer had their first talk regarding the disappearance of Nora. Friday May 25 Keith was arrested at his home for the murder of Nora Kifer. Friday July 13 Keith was bound over to court after his preliminary hearing in Boonville. Sept 8 the Warrick Co grand jury brought an indictment against Keith for the murder of Nora Kifer. On Jan 13 1901 sentenced to death at Princeton Ind after a trial of 13 days. May 24 1901 Joseph D Keith paid the penalty at Michigan City after confessing to the crime he was charged and asking forgiveness and the priviledge of meeting the one he loved Nora over on the other shore. - ------------------------------- Tamara's Genealogy http://www.angelfire.com/in/tamaraspage/index.html Tamara's Page for Ind & Ky Grave Inscriptions 20 Pages of Cemeteries Many Surnames http://www.angelfire.com/in/tamaraspage/page8.html Warrick Co Ind Mystery Photo's http://www.angelfire.com/in/tamaraspage/page29.html

You are right, the piece said that the maid upset because she worked one day a week for the ESKEW family at a daily rate of 8 dollars which 1 dollar was held for social securtity taxes,For a period of one year this arrangement went smoothly until the maid Mrs Loraine Dixon was told by a worker at the social security there were no unemployment compensation in her name at the office only three weeks prior to the shooting, the maid became upset and brooded for the three weeks and purchased the Belgain pearl handled revolver for 30 dollars at a local pawn shop,She took it with her to dicuss the taxes on the Saturday morning of the murder. She was invited in the study by Mrs Eskew to discuss the matter when an disagreement took place,She accused Mrs Eskew of not turning over the witheld tax money to the government. She shot Mrs Eskew in the neck and the woman struggled to her feet to flee when the maid fired again hitting Mrs Eskew in the back. At this same instance Mr Eskew entered the study and struggled with the maid for the gun,It was dropped to the floor and the maid fled to her own home in Evansville where she was arrested 2 hours later. Its reported a third shot was found in the wall directly above the body. The maid was seperated from her husband at the time of the shooting and her boys ages 6 & 8 were taken to relatives in Henderson Ky. Her signed statement included that she had indeed intended to settle the matter on Saturday. Mrs Eskew was sadly dead on arrival at the hospital. - ---------------------------- This is the follow up story I felt that it may not have been of interest to some so I omitted it and typed up the breif obit abt Mrs Eskew's murder. There is a lovely picture of Mrs Eskew on the front page of the newspaper along side the article above. To add to Tamara's interesting e-mail contribution about the churches in Warrick County, the one that is of particular interest to me is the second official Methodist church built at the intersection of Jennings and Hwy 62 in Newburgh. My grandfather Wesley Frederick Fink (14 Jul 1893 - 14 Sep 1977) was pastor of that church when it was built 1923-1924 and the cornerstone on the building supposedly includes his name. Rev. Fink supplied 15 churches in the South Indiana Conference between 1915 and his retirement in 1958. I once again add my thanks to Tamara for sharing all of her genealogy findings with us. Dear Tamara, I always enjoy your submissions to the Warrick Co. Rootsweb. One recent obituary caught my attention even tho' it did not involve a member of our family. That was the social security murder. I found myself in a similar situation about 1962 or 1963. If memory serves me right, the law at the time was that Social Security should be deducted from any household employee that earned more than $50.00 a quarter (every three months). Few people apparently obeyed the law and as witnessed by recent political appointments, few are still obeying the law. Half of the payment was to be made by the employer and half by the employee. I, too, had a cleaning lady and she became irate when I withheld her half of the payment. I finally decided that it wasn't worth the upset and I paid the entire payment myself. In this day of high Social Security deductions, you may be surprised to know that the money under dispute was just $.25 (25 cents) a week. Even if the cleaning woman worked a full week, instead of just a day, her probable deduction might not have been more than $1.25 a week. That is hardly worth committing murder for. Thanks again for all of your effort. Nancy

The Mail must go thru. The First Mail Route was established in 1812 in Warrick Co Ind. It was routed from Evansville to Newburgh to Corydon Ky The mail was carried by horseback and required 2 weeks to make the round trip. Both horse and rider wer compelled to swim streams which they could not ford and mail bags were often soaked. In 1847 Mr Dawson carried the mail from Evansville to Newburgh to Boonville to Rockport to Troy to Midway then he made a return trip changing horses at Midway. In Spring when the water was high the trip was omitted. Mr Dawson's salary was 8 DOLLARS a MONTH. Later the mail was brought to Warrick in river packets.
