    1. [INWARRIC] Cemeteries
    2. >From a column, ALL ABOUT ANTIQUES, by Ralph and Tery Kovel, published in the Jacksonville, Florida Florida Times-Union newspaper. Copyrighted. Death has always been a part of everyday life. In Victorian times, many children died before they were 10, women died in childbirth, and epidemics like smallpox often killed several members of the same family. The cemetery was a place to "talk" to the deceased while honoring them with flowers. Family outings, and often picnics, were common-place in large, park-like cemeteries. Victorian memorials to the dead included elaborate tombstones, carved statues, cast iron fences, gates, and furniture. Today we often miss some of the symbolism of the early grave markers. A weeping willow signified grief, and a lamb was often carved on a child's tomb. A bridal wreath with a dart symbolized a bride, while a rosebud with a broken stem was used to remember an infant. For-get-me-nots, anchors, tree stumps, ivy, doves, crosses, sleeping children and other symbols of death and rebirth are also found on old artifacts from Victorian cemeteries. The park-like cemetery remained popular until about World War I. By that time, many diseases had been conquered and early deaths of fzmily members were less common. The cemetery was rarely visited and sometimes neglected. The legends of ghosts, goblins and bodies rising from the grave became part of literature and common belief. In the past, attractive carvings and wrought iron pieces were stolen from cemeteries and sold to collectors. Authorities are now prosecuting those who sell such items, and buyers must return them to the cemetery.

    10/15/1999 04:07:47
    1. [INWARRIC] The Hull Murder
    2. Boonville Standard, Friday, May 28, 1897: THE HULL MURDER There are no new developments in the mysterious assassination of Samuel Asa HULL, near Selvin, on Tuesday, last week. Samuel, the youngest child of the murdered man, is yet lying in the Boonville jail however, as the suspected criminal. A representative of the Standard visited the jail yesterday and endeavored to get Sam to talk about the crime, but the only words he muttered were "No arrangements have yet been made for my lawyer." He would not even answer the question: "Are you guilty or innocent?" He will not say a word concerning the murder to the Sheriff or any, of the prisoners in jail. The proof against Sam is very strong. The bullets extracted from the body of his father fit Sam's revolver. His sister Agnes will swear that Sam threatened his father's life more than once. Immediately before the shooting, Sam obtained his pistol at the house of a neighbor, Henry WINDELL, and just after the shooting returned it. Then on the afternoon of the murder, Sam's sharp quarrel with his father, is also a clue. At the coroner's inquest Sam is said to have acknowledged he was near the scene of the murder when it occurred, but claimed he was just going after water to WINDELL'S house. It is known that the children of Mr. and Mrs. Asa HULL took part in the quarrels of the parents. After the parents were divorced, about a year and one half ago, three children took side with their mother, the children being George, of Kansas; Elmida, of Huntingburgh, and Sam who lived with his mother on the farm adjoining his father's land. The three children who were friendly with "Uncle" Asa were Agnes, who lived with him; Christopher, of Kansas, and Matilda, of Illinois. Uncle Asa had a farm of about 350 acres, and was worth several thousand dollars. His divorced wife also possesses quite a good deal of land, and is worth considerable money. the murdered man had not made a will, but intended to do so soon. It is claimed the children who have not been friendly to "Uncle" Asa will come in legally for their share of the estate.
